mandelbrotwurst··on Job-hopping heats up: 65% of U.S. workers are looking for a new job
> Mostly correct, up 42% YOY.

How is that only "mostly" correct?

mandelbrotwurst··on Job-hopping heats up: 65% of U.S. workers are looking for a new job
I'm in a similar boat. For me though, it's not so much that I want to avoid the effort involved in the switch as that you need to spend time in a role in order to have significant impact, and that my longer-term success is likely going to be more dependent on whether I'm able to point to a record of consistently making significant contributions than it is in my maximizing my salary for the next year.

Uber does have partnerships through which they offer expense tracking apps to their drivers.
mandelbrotwurst··on Wildfire restored a Yosemite watershed
Thanks, I was imagining the smaller stuff as being part of the forest but I suppose maybe the plants that arise first don’t necessarily stick around for the entirety of the forest lifecycle?
mandelbrotwurst··on Wildfire restored a Yosemite watershed
What is recolonization in this context? Does it just mean growth of a new forest?

That sounds like an issue of collectively managing shared resources that would exist even if the occupants owned the units, no?

I was lucky enough to have some guavas around for a while but not very recently - if I’m remembering correctly I think the seed hardness is also largely a function of how ripe they are?
mandelbrotwurst··on Activision Blizzard employees walk out over harassment and ‘frat boy’ culture
Fair enough, I’m coming at this from more of a non-gaming tech / SaaS startup lens. Maybe it would work, I’m not sure!
mandelbrotwurst··on Activision Blizzard employees walk out over harassment and ‘frat boy’ culture
That VC would need a lot of confidence in the team to be willing to fully fund them with no revenue, clients, or IP.

mandelbrotwurst··on Finding a kernel regression in half an hour with git bisect run (2018)
Eh, depends on what you’re optimizing for. For fixing the bug as quickly as possible, yes. For spreading that context throughout the team or getting other features out that the person with context is best equipped to ship, no.
mandelbrotwurst··on Amazon EC2-Classic Is Retiring
One aspect of this mix-up that I enjoy is the fact that deprecating something causes its value to depreciate, by quite a lot!
mandelbrotwurst··on Fourplexes allowed on every S.F. single-family lot?
I very much agree with you that there are drawbacks to increasing density, but SF isn't exactly going to look like Tokyo just because you let people in the Sunset and Richmond Districts convert some single family homes into fourplexes.

mandelbrotwurst··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Yes, this is a side effect of stack ranking and it exists even when the class sizes are large.

It also encourages zero-sum thinking generally.

mandelbrotwurst··on Akamai Edge DNS was down
Gotcha, yeah I guess I always just considered that out of scope for their service and that it’s just a report aggregator but I suppose you would expect it to be at least a little bit clever based on the “detector” name
mandelbrotwurst··on Akamai Edge DNS was down
It’s just based on user reports, so this is people mischaracterizing it as an AWS outage.
mandelbrotwurst··on Temporary or not, inflation is rattling restaurants and broader economy
Sure, I was more just using those as colorful analogy to make the possibility easier to understand.

I agree with you that it’s difficult to predict whether inflation will or won’t be transitory and I suspect that if you got Powell to speak honestly about the issue he’d tell you that his confidence in his projection is closer to 2/3 than 99/100.

He does have a lot of quite powerful tools that make it easier for him to be correct, such as expanding the money supply by an unlimited amount and defining the inflation metric.

mandelbrotwurst··on Support for team members who are mistreated in their country
This is an operational policy document - they’re making specific guarantees to their employees about how they will support them. That’s a lot stronger than claiming to uphold some set of values because it means that they’re willing to risk losing the trust of their employees if they don’t stick to this.
mandelbrotwurst··on Temporary or not, inflation is rattling restaurants and broader economy
There's no conflict in that statement - something can be both unprecedented in its rate of change while simultaneously not expected to last for a particularly long time. Look to various natural phenomena for examples of this - a bad storm, a tornado, a tsunami, a wildfire, a volcanic eruption.

Note: Not claiming anything here about where prices will head next.

mandelbrotwurst··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
Unemployment rates refer to the share of workers who are out of work, not the share who are receiving benefits - i.e. it’s the rate at which people are unemployed, not the rate at which they are “on unemployment”
mandelbrotwurst··on The case for banning non-competes
Those people probably either (or both) of do not understand the nature of the issue(s) and/or are just as happy being somewhere where they won't be issue(s) for a long time as somewhere that's managed to prevent them in perpetuity.

If you're trying to get through these while spending the least amount of time on them, you want to answer "How would most people presented with this answer the following: _______ ?" as opposed to "What do you think is the most correct answer to the following ________ ?"
