malbiniak··on Ask HN: Is it hard/bad to apply for jobs in cities you don't live in?
I've tried both. I've found better success with #1.

This isn't substantiated, but my thinking is: - hr/recruiters notice if you've made a move - people see it as a sign of commitment if you've made a move - you're more likely to find a job the easy way: networking with likeminded people - you're more likely to avoid bad pursuits (ie, the "good on paper company")

The economy isn't bad for talented people. Believe in yourself, show employers why they need you, and get on with your first job already.

You've got a world to get out there and conquer.

Best of luck, -m

malbiniak··on Rely your web startup on Rackspace Cloud? Think again
first - didn't want to come off as "complain and your problem will be fixed." i never anticipated having it called reasonable.

third - second paragraph is my interpretation of a conversation i had with some people from rackspace and it could be wrong.

also, hello from minneapolis.

malbiniak··on Rely your web startup on Rackspace Cloud? Think again
This may sound contrived and sarcastic, but I assure you it is not.

Try your best to get Robert Scoble's attention on this. Rackspace has tasked him with being an evangelist primarily focused on startups and bringing them into the Rackspace services. It's my understanding that things like this should be his primary concern.

I could be mistaken, but I'm used to that.

malbiniak··on Email overload? Try Priority Inbox
It should be along shortly, if not already. I've got it in my personal gmail account and my apps account.
malbiniak··on Jason Calacanis' Warning To Y Combinator Startups [video]
I loosely know of Jason Calacanis and don't know what credibilty he has to base these statements on, but it he does raise any interesting point.

What precedent does Facebook have to support the 3rd party developer ecosystem on apps.facebook? /me points at http://developers.facebook.com/docs/api*.

I'd be really interested to see what other HNers have to say about what I think is the main issue: given you don't think becoming a facebook fte is your desired exit strategy, what would you do to protect your IP from Facebook?

malbiniak··on Conde Nast refuses to run Prop 19 ads on reddit
Since we're not allowed to benefit financially, reddit is now running the ads for free.

Nice hack, reddit.

malbiniak··on Applications open for Winter 2011 YC Funding, Deadline October 19
Is there a good network of startups and mentors near you to get support from? I live in Chicago, and I'd probably ask myself that same question before deciding to leave Mountain View. There's a lot of things you can do remotely, but support is one that I just can't do. Not sure about you or others. Regardless, if I got accepted to YC, I'd consider this a good problem to have.

I just spammed Ian Hogarth from SongKick on Twitter, asking him to weigh in. I'm curious to hear his thoughts on it.

malbiniak··on Design For Hackers: Why You Don't Use Garamond on The Web
Here's my logic: if you read the post, you already saw the plug (on the post).

Edit: that sounds snarky. It's not intended to be, but just an explanation of why I downvoted. I can appreciate your later comment, but when I made my reply to your original comment, yours was the only other comment in the submission. It seemed tacky.

malbiniak··on Design For Hackers: Why You Don't Use Garamond on The Web
Although it might be a creative way to promote your panel, it earned a downvote. Just don't think it's the appropriate place to promote it.
malbiniak··on $500k Selling Camera+ pulled from AppStore over 'Easter Egg'
Like when Yelp snuck in Monocole in before the iPhone 3.1 release? Except in that case, there was a very different outcome (they weren't removed from the store).
malbiniak··on HN: Minneapolis Meetup Tonight
Great to see something like this coming together, but considering it's at the Bulldog NE, it's a wash ;)
malbiniak··on Stop Calling Yourself a Rockstar and a Ninja
Oh Twitter and your timely relevance.

malbiniak··on Ask HN: Terminology: differentiating a project and a startup
Color me the pessimist, but my response to the "8th startup" would be "why'd you quit on the other 7 and decide to do it again?"

For me, a startup is something you throw everything into: time, (your own) money, and aggressively focus on. It's filed, you have customer focus, and you're not doing it as a hobby. Sorry, I'm over the "startup" (project) that's building something fascinating...but has no focus on generating revenue. It's a hobby. Not a startup.

malbiniak··on Why Google should lower Gmail's attachment limit.
Just because the originating server allows massive attachments doesn't ensure the receiving server will accept it. Within the past week, I got an email from a client saying they couldn't receive anything larger than 5mb and we'd have to gasp FTP it.

...or use http://www.wetransfer.com (unless it's sensitive).

malbiniak··on Ask HN: How to find like-minded people?
It depends on the type of feedback you're looking for. If it's engineering based, take the suggestions of others and look for meetups or user groups in your area. Even at 17, don't be shy about looking for tech groups at any colleges in your area.
malbiniak··on [dead]
Would you mind talking about any lessons learned from offshoring? Was there anything you could have done differently to have a different outcome?
malbiniak··on Reality: Old Spice sales are actually up 107% in the last month
if consumers are so easily influenced, why do so many startups have a hard time influencing them?
malbiniak··on How Steam stopped me from pirating games and enjoy the sweet DRM kool-aid
i owned counter-strike: source for windows. i was AMAZED that i didn't have to purchase it for mac.

this particular kool aid is delicious.

malbiniak··on Ask HN: Feedback on Mixest, my HTML5 ironic indie Pandora
i'm curious -- what part of this is a great idea? for example, is it the html5 execution (and flash rollback), or the music library, etc.?
malbiniak··on Ask HN: Feedback on Mixest, my HTML5 ironic indie Pandora
is this a personal project, or something you're hoping to get a revenue model behind?
malbiniak··on inDinero (YC S10) launches Mint.com for Businesses
Keep me posted on the Swiss bank, also any offshore accounts in the Caymans. There's a couple offers coming out of Nigera that I'm about to move on.

:)

Congratulations on the launch, and cheering for your team!

malbiniak··on Ask HN: Should I launch anyway if unhappy about my product?
Launch...but don't blow your wad on marketing until you think you're ready. If you're not confident in it, I'm not sure how you're going to sell it. A small launch within your network could get you the feedback you're looking for.

Don't beat yourself up about Blippy, gdgt, and Swipely. What did they do right? What did they do wrong? What can you learn from them (and on their dollar)? And -- are they REALLY your competitors?

Two last comments. If your design is on the level of your blog design, you'll be fine. It's really clean with clear and concise messaging. Also, have you considered the widening "products you love" into "things you love?" I'm being selfish, but I'd love to be able to follow new "products" from "things I love," like bands. Forget that last thought :)

malbiniak··on Please review the iSound.com beta - (Pandora for new music)
this could be tough to translate in written form. the visual design of the playback screen (http://beta.isound.com/#/artists?search=outkast) is confusing and unbalanced.

maybe it's the repetitive use of the play button (search, similar songs). maybe it's each song being in its own container. maybe it's the lack of visual emphasis on any one area (the shared white between the header, player, and playlist).

ultimately, i like this (http://grab.by/5f07) over this (http://grab.by/5f04). sorry i can't be more specific.

malbiniak··on Please review the iSound.com beta - (Pandora for new music)
Tried "the wombats." Artist not found. "Clutch" found results, but the first three songs were pretty painful. "Mos Def" and I'm happy.

What's behind the recommendations? Is it manual (like Pandora)?

How are you approving music? There's a reason some new music never gets heard. I'd be really interested in hearing how you solved the quality control challenge.

At some point, an artist is going to stop being "up & coming."

Why not use Open Graph and Connect for likes and logins?

I think I've been listening for about 25 minutes. I like listening to it, but visual seems pretty disconnected. I really like the way rdio is doing their playlist and controls.

malbiniak··on Woot To Be Acquired By Amazon
i may have taken the original comment out of context. i've seen a couple CEOs being cool (hip, funny, etc.) when they needed a leader. i think that's dangerous, and that's the point i meant to make.

specifically to yours, no, its not cool to fire people, but i would rather hear well rationalized case for deciding to let me go (assuming it wasn't performance related) instead of a cleverly written kthxbai. still, that even that wouldn't be cool.

malbiniak··on Woot To Be Acquired By Amazon
keep in mind, being cool doesn't always make you a good leader, but being a good leader is always cool.

malbiniak··on Ask HN: I really want to start a startup but I don't know what to do.
There's a lot of other good comments here. Some might be relevant to you, some might not be.

Here's my advice: If you don't have the AH-HAH moment, don't do it.

More rigid framework:

- what's the problem you're trying to solve?

- who is your customer?

- why would they pay for it?

malbiniak··on Ask HN: how would you monetize Learnivore.com ?
(With the IP owners permission...)

Convert the screencasts into a standard format via Hey!Watch or Encoding.com, make them available for offline content on mobile devices. Charge for that, give a kickback to the IP owner.

malbiniak··on Advertising - MDC’s ‘Million-Dollar Challenge’ to Foster Start-Up Agencies
I never thought I'd say that a 51% stake is a good opportunity, but this is a good opportunity.
