machtesh··on Show HN: Reddit clone built in no-code in two weeks
I made a reddit-like app/website on Bubble about 1.5 years ago and overall I was very happy with the speed I was able to get it out there. I built it in a few days which I personally never would have been able to do in code.

But since it relies on SEO to succeed, I'm now considering coding it from scratch because it's a huge limitation in Bubble.

machtesh··on Yelp Is Replacing Restaurants’ Phone Numbers So Grubhub Can Take a Cut (2019)
I built an alternative to Yelp called TasteJury.

It doesn't give you an answer to your food allergy, but it is more about the food and rating/ranking than Yelp.

It's also sorted by dishes/food category. It aims to answer: "Where is the best place to get X dish in Y city?". Service, ambience, etc don't matter. It's only about where to get the best food.

machtesh··on Show HN: My Side Project Rocks – Share and discover side projects
Just submitted my side project TasteJury. Hoping it brings some traffic!

When I went to submit it, it said that the name of the project had to be at least 10 characters long. I don't think this makes sense. Perhaps the minimum should be 2-3 characters.

I was able to get around it by adding spaces after the name, by the way!

machtesh··on Show HN: TasteJury – Leaderboards of best places to get a specific dish
Hi, a bit of background on this project.

When I travel, I often want to find the best place to get a specific dish (e.g. taco al pastor), which is not necessarily found at the best Mexican restaurant in a city. So I created this site where people can input dishes and places and vote on them. So far it's in New York, LA, SF, Toronto, Chicago, and Austin.

Feel free to add dishes, restaurants, and vote.

Would love to hear feedback!

machtesh··on An app can be a home-cooked meal
Gosh I wish it was the opposite to me! Cooking seems fairly easy and making apps seems daunting.

I started a newsletter with very quick tips on cooking if you ever want to learn. It's easier than you think! https://aldente.substack.com

machtesh··on Ask HN: What to do now I'm a manager?
It sounds like you're doing a great job so far. Maybe you could use a coach to get you to the next step. We provide that: https://LeadingUp.co

machtesh··on Ask HN: Any Resources for Starting as Manager?
We wrote this post which sums up what we've learned coaching managers.

https://blog.leadingup.co/almost-everything-weve-learned-in-...

Books or blog posts can be helpful, but if you really want to become an amazing leader, getting a coach is the way to go. (All the well known leaders have coaches, why not you?) https://leadingup.co/

machtesh··on Ask HN: Is there a site for consultants / mentors “as a service”?
Not for technical stuff, but for managerial stuff: http://leadingup.co
machtesh··on Ask HN: What to do after the workday?
Second this. Recently got a slackline and it's absolutely the best way to meet people. I often have groups of 5-10 people crowded around. People are curious about it and where I'm from they aren't afraid to ask to try it.
machtesh··on Show HN: Incubator as a Service – we build, launch and test your employees ideas

machtesh··on Ask HN: How to be a good technical team leader
Have no fear. With a bit of commitment and practice, you can learn to be really good with your people. Just a few key actionable skills can turn you into a great team leader. In addition to telling and reminding your people to do things, make sure you PRAISE in one way or another, after they have done what you asked them.

Here’s something I wrote recently on the key tips to becoming a great team leader: https://blog.leadingup.co/almost-everything-weve-learned-in-...

But, there's only so much reading online can help. You mentioned that you don't know how to handle various situations. You need situation specific advice, not general. To me that sounds like a management/leadership coach. We run an unlimited coaching service for people exactly like you: https://leadingup.co/ or email me: aaron@leadingup.co

Hope we can help you!

machtesh··on Ask HN: Blogs about Being CTO/Head of/Lead Dev?
Not a blog, but if you end up needing specific and ongoing advice about people management from experienced coaches, we offer an unlimited coaching service for managers of technical teams:

https://leadingup.co/

One thing that I think is important that you won't find in blogs is that you have to change your behavior as well as your teammates' behaviors in order to actually see change. Regular discussions with a coach about specific situations will help make sure these behavior changes are consistent.

machtesh··on Interviews with developers who became managers
If you are getting fleeting moments of satisfaction managing people - that’s good. You have to give yourself a chance. Being a manager means getting things done through other people. You have to try to increase those moments as the manager where you feel your team is becoming more productive and happier. At the same time, you will also have to learn to give more constructive feedback to those who are not achieving. That’s not an easy job. But clearly, you have to give yourself more time to become more proficient at utilizing management skills. It can be extremely rewarding knowing that you have an impact on others’ lives. However, having said all this, there will come a point in time when you will have to be true to yourself. Managing people is not for everyone. You may decide that you absolutely truly love coding and go back to it. I want to make this very clear that this does not make you are a good or bad person. It simply is what it is. You have to decide ultimately in the short and intermediate term what truly makes you happy and where you can make the greatest contribution.

Sometimes getting a coach can help you learn the right skills or just be a good sounding board. Someone else offered a free coaching session which you should definitely try out, but if you want a long term solution, we offer unlimited coaching for new managers here: https://leadingup.co

machtesh··on Google Issuing Refunds to Advertisers Over Fake Traffic, Plans New Safeguard
While the article talks about Adsense fraud, there's a ton of fraud happening on Adwords as well like competitors or bots that click on your ads to deplete your ad budget. Google provides refunds for some of those fraudulent clicks as well.

I'm a developer at https://www.clickcease.com/ a company that's been fighting click fraud for the past few years. If you're affected by click fraud, we can detect fraudulent ad clicks and automatically file refund claims with Google.
