lutze··on The Minecraft Creator Markus Persson Faces Life After Fame
How could they? You can't do this on your Wii et al. Modern home systems are geared towards a strictly consumerist experience, not a creative one.

This is one of the reasons the Raspberry Pi was created.

lutze··on The Minecraft Creator Markus Persson Faces Life After Fame
Wow, some real schadenfreude going on there.

I really don't understand some of the bile that follows Persson around.

Are people really that fucking bitter that a guy who by his own admission is a complete klutz (programming and business-wise) can become so successful?

lutze··on A Personal Statement from Iain Banks
I'm not sure if you understand what MacMillan is about, but you're comparing apples and oranges here.

"Fuck Cancer" is all well and good... but MacMillan's work isn't about finding a cure, it's about easing suffering. They provide support and care to patients and their families, "Not Alone" sums them up pretty perfectly.

lutze··on Worst CAPTCHA Ever
You're missing the point bud, it's not that it's easy to guess, it's that the answer is in the bloody HTML as plaintext.

No guessing required.

lutze··on The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy and Wikipedia
This has all the hallmarks of a Scientology operation.

Seriously, is no one else getting the vibe here?

lutze··on Killing hackers is justified in cyber warfare, says NATO-commissioned report
There is an easier way though... change all the fucking passwords from "password" and stop buying compromised equipment from China because it's cheap!

Military intelligence.

lutze··on [dead]
The quote isn't false per se, just wrongly attributed.

That does create a sort of tragic irony I suppose, because like I said, Barnum was a pretty great guy all told (philanthropist, abolitionist...)

lutze··on [dead]
Except Barnum never said that, and was actually a pretty fucking stand up guy when you look into it.
lutze··on Google killed me
The problem here is that Google apparently isn't aware, not her.
lutze··on Richard Garriott on why “most game designers really just suck”
What he's done lately is launch a kickstarter for a new game, this is just marketing.

Or in less polite terms, bullshit hype from a man who needed to come back to Earth long long before he went into fucking space.

lutze··on Two Months of Soylent
He just gives nutritional information, not an ingredients list.

In the latest post he mentions that several chemists have figured out how to make his concoction, but he explicitly states he's not making the recipe public yet.

lutze··on First-person Tetris
Interesting idea! I wouldn't recommend trying to play this after being on the vino all night though.

Excuse me while I find a bucket.

lutze··on We searched for Porn. We found you
How the fuck is this ethically any different from those webcam/revenge porn blackmail sites?

Hypothetical question, by the way.

lutze··on Could the eagles have flown Frodo into Mordor? (2000)
According to the actual myth, Pegasus was created when Perseus killed Medusa.

Of course, you can't expect Hollywood to not somehow totally fuck up even a 3000 year old story, it's kinda what they do.

lutze··on As Math Grows More Complex, Will Computers Reign?
The last part was a joke, calm down dear.

Edit: As for psychologists, you're seriously telling me you never heard of Licklider? That's... astounding.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._C._R._Licklider

lutze··on As Math Grows More Complex, Will Computers Reign?
No one is saying that.

Levers. No one said the pulley (or CAD) rendered the architect defunct, and no one is saying computers should do the same for mathematicians. We're just trying to understand this resistance to using tools to help do heavy lifting, the “human-centric bigotry” as the article puts it. Reading some of the responses here, it's probably being overstated, but even so.

And ignore you and go play somewhere else? A good number of the most influential computer scientists have actually been psychologists, not mathematicians, so the older brother needs to get the fuck over himself if that's his attitude!

lutze··on As Math Grows More Complex, Will Computers Reign?
To me, this is akin to asking "as building materials grow heavier, will cranes reign?"

Computers have always been envisioned as levers for the mind. The fact that mathematicians of all people aren't taking full advantage of that principle utterly boggles my mind too.

lutze··on Mars trip to use astronaut poo as radiation shield
The normal method isn't terribly adequate AFAIK, at least for the weight. The ISS crew has a pretty substantial increased cancer risk, and they're still partially protected by Earth's magnetic field.

Over a long term interplanetary voyage, the chances of cancers developing would probably approach 100%.

I think the idea is, you're going to have to carry all that water to Mars anyway, and it just happens to be the best form of shielding around.

lutze··on This Story Stinks
I don't necessarily disagree with you, it's a good point well made (it also made me laugh).

That being said, if you can't handle being called an idiot on the internet, you unfortunately probably are an idiot (on the internet).

lutze··on This Story Stinks
Yeah seriously.

This guy just lauded the internet as a bastion of debate, and then in the same breath bemoaned the fact that the dirty proles get to talk back.

It's not a "debate" if other people don't get a say, it's propaganda...

lutze··on HTML5 localStorage allows sites to fill up users' hard disks
Because most of the browser vendors see "standards" as more like "suggestions".

I'm sure any web developer will tell you it's been a problem from the moment there was more than one browser. This is just a particularly hilarious example.

lutze··on [dead]
What he should have failed them for is thinking Obama is a socialist.
lutze··on Anti-Piracy Group to The Pirate Bay: We Want You To Sue Us
Lowering themselves?

You seem to be under the misapprehension that these people ever held the moral high ground in the first place.

lutze··on Dash-cams: Russia’s Last Hope For Civility And Survival On The Road (2012)
Hah, just go on youtube and search for "Russian driving".

Those dash cams have been there for years, they're the gift that keeps on giving!

lutze··on EU Data Protection: Proposed Amendments Written by US Lobbyists
It's not audaciousness, it's ignorance.
lutze··on Petition the Whitehouse to remove Carmen Ortiz from office
I think you're missing the point vis a vis "fix the machine, not the person".

The tactics described in the petition are ingrained in the US justice system. Getting rid of a single prosecutor isn't going to change a damn thing because the injustices are systemic, not the product of a vindictive individual.

Like Aaron said, shouting at the gears isn't going to fix the machine.

lutze··on Ed McMillen: Ubuntu Store Sold Super Meat Boy Without Permission, Has Yet To Pay
From what I recall of the story, the login for SMB's level database was stored in plaintext in the exe.

That picture is the guy who found it telling the devs, and the devs not understanding why it's a problem.

Cue their database being "hacked" a short while later... and another internet meme is born!

lutze··on Stop Conflating Violence and Mental Illness
I think you might be taking my analogy a little far there.

I wasn't suggesting a straight find/replace of car with firearm...

lutze··on Stop Conflating Violence and Mental Illness
I'm not sure what your point is, because cars are already very heavily regulated?

To drive a car you need to pass a competency test, as well as be insured against accidents. Your right to drive can also be revoked if at any time you demonstrate that you can't operate one safely.

So uh, yeah. I agree with you, lets do guns like cars!

lutze··on Calling Steve Jobs ‘Lucky’ Would Be A Sin
I've heard Jobs called a lot of things over the years (mostly the C word, if we're honest), but lucky? As in "merely" lucky? Nah.

The guy had a head on his shoulders, you've got to give him that.
