lokl··on Show HN: This Fursona Does Not Exist
I'd like to propose a "does not exist" site that does not exist: This Family Does Not Exist. Generate faces and a family tree, where I can see familial resemblance and where that resemblance follows our understanding of genetics.

Related business: let me upload photos of my relatives and a family tree, and show me generated faces for other people on the family tree (e.g., common ancestors) based on these inputs and genetics. I wonder what kind of accuracy can be achieved in generating a person's face, based on how many descendants' faces we have photos of, over how many generations, with how much inbreeding, etc.

lokl··on Show HN: AI Generated SEO Articles
I hope projects like http://gltr.io/ can eliminate this type of content from search results, or at least give me a browser-based alert when I encounter it.

lokl··on Organizing a Group Buy of Flour
Any (developing world) group buy experts here? Many years ago, I considered trying to organize fertilizer group buys in sub-Saharan Africa via SMS, where it seemed (to me, as a non-expert in this subject) that many smallholder farmers lacked access to affordable high-quality fertilizer and that group buying might help. I explored this enough to apply for a grant to develop it (and delivery logistics), but that didn't come through and I didn't pursue it further. Has something like this been tried? Is it needed? Seeing this article brought it all back.

What is the feasibility of the postal service delivering non-perishable food to every residential mailbox? I just received a census form in the mail, why not dried beans?
lokl··on Airbnb racks up hundreds of millions of dollars in losses -- WSJ
No problem cancelling my Airbnb bookings, but I'm slightly concerned about receiving service fees as coupons. The last time I used an Airbnb coupon and then cancelled that reservation, I lost the value of the coupon (even though the cancellation was within the 100% refund period). An extremely minor concern given what's going on, of course.

What percentage are social distancing when they're in the parks? Where I am, outdoor recreation areas are busier than ever, but I estimate <5% are actively social distancing and it's common to see close proximity between strangers, sometimes brief, sometimes not. I initially thought I could keep my distance from others while in these areas, that my own vigilance would be adequate, but they're just too crowded and I worry about a momentary lapse in my defenses, especially if I go out on a regular basis.

Can anyone point to data about chloroquine use by people with quinine allergies? I am allergic to tonic water, perhaps to the quinine in it. Thanks.

Are you sure that the standards applied to your background checks were also applied to those of relatives of the President? If the background check system is politicized, then this kind of hacking to discover sensitive information might become even more valuable.

lokl··on Publishers Determined to Kill E-Books
"Publishers don't like the ebook market, and my guess is that it's because of how little control they have over it."

I heard a different explanation in the early days of ebooks: that publishers were afraid ebook pricing and lack of physicality would diminish the perceived value of print books. This from a few in the print publishing industry, but I don't know how widespread it was or is.

lokl··on New, slippery toilet coating provides cleaner flushing, saves water
If you're only using the toilet twice per day, I suggest drinking more water :) https://www.healthline.com/health/how-often-should-you-pee

But maybe you mean only flushing twice per day, despite using it more frequently, in order to save water? That would beg the question of how this coating material would hold up when subjected for hours per day to the "toilet environment" you produce vs. a clean water environment.

lokl··on MNT Reform DIY Laptop
To what extent have you consulted the mechanical keyboard community? There is a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience about keyboard layout, electronics, software, hardware, etc. and it is not obvious to me that a community design would closely resemble what you are using. I recommend posting to https://reddit.com/r/mechanicalkeyboards, https://geekhack.com, and https://deskthority.net, and possibly reaching out directly to some of the most experienced individuals, if you have not already done so. The keyboard has been an important part of the success of at least one major laptop brand.
lokl··on A French Tunnel Sculpture That Took 30 Years to Complete
Incidentally, if you are in this area, I recommend seeing the nearby prehistoric cave paintings of La Grotte du Pech Merle (the cave itself is also interesting). Unlike some of the other caves, what you see is original (not a reproduction), multi-colored, and tickets can be purchased well in advance. For me, it was an experience that could not be compared to anything else -- being there provided a new view of humanity.
lokl··on Goodbye Aron Eisenberg:( — aka Nog (DS9)
Thanks, this is good to hear.
lokl··on Goodbye Aron Eisenberg:( — aka Nog (DS9)
I had the feeling when watching DS9 that the role of Nog became greater and more complex than originally planned because of the high caliber of Eisenberg's acting. I don't have evidence to support this, but perhaps someone here knows more. Regardless, I thought his was among the best acting in the show.
lokl··on Show HN: Noric-bot – A bot to stress-test text-based MUDs, written in Scala 3
I was an admin (wiz) on various MUDs and MUSHs many, many years ago, and of course an avid user. The mix of programming, creativity, and camaraderie was sometimes very special. Maybe my recollections are clouded by nostalgia, but it sometimes felt like a hacker fantasy, coding, role-playing, and working together for good (fun). I wish I could recapture that feeling, I wish there were time for it, and I wish there were some way it would do good in real life.

I can't contribute anything directly about this bot, but I'm glad to see MUDs are still being studied. I feel like I never saw the full potential of what they could do for society. Some of the social interactions were much more rewarding than anything I have experienced on so-called "social" media.

lokl··on Was Etsy too good to be true?
My one Etsy experience was great, I paid an order of magnitude less than "regular" businesses were asking for a small piece of brass acid-etched with my own .svg design. I turned to Etsy because I imagined that such an item could be manufactured at home with low overhead cost. Still, many Etsy sellers were asking more than I expected and it was only when I searched based on a common use for such an item (not my use) that I found a great price. My use: boat plaque. Common use: pet tag.

I wonder what other small-batch custom manufacturing can be found on Etsy at a good price and under what search terms.

More generally, is there a list of "where to get it made" based on manufacturing methods, materials, (small) quantity, size, etc.?
