lokl··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
Has there been any progress on undeciphered languages?
lokl··on Ise Jingu and the Pyramid of Enabling Technologies (2021)
I understand your concern and agree about Kyoto, but tourists can behave well or poorly and tourism can be managed well or poorly. At Jingu, I saw foreign tourists, but no problems, and locals were welcoming. Elsewhere in Mie, I saw no foreign tourists and locals were also welcoming. I would like to believe that HN readers would be beneficial tourists and might themselves benefit from experiences that cannot as easily be found in the top destinations.
lokl··on Ise Jingu and the Pyramid of Enabling Technologies (2021)
Incidentally, Mie Prefecture ranked 37 out of 47 Japanese prefectures for overnight stays by foreign tourists in 2024, but it has a lot to offer in addition to Ise Jingu. For those seeking the "real Japan" beyond Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. If you want to explore, consider Kintetsu's 5-day plus pass and fit this into your itinerary between Nagoya and Osaka, Kyoto, or Nara.
lokl··on 'They take you out of life, out of time': a journey into Spain's cave paintings
If you are interested in seeing original cave paintings, not reproductions, I recommend Pech Merle near Cahors, France.

Please compare with FineReader.
lokl··on Manticore Search: Fast, efficient, drop-in replacement for Elasticsearch
I've been using Sphinx for 20 years for full-text search with a custom stemmer. I considered switching to Manticore, but didn't see a huge need to do so, because Sphinx still works well for me and requires zero maintenance. Any big new features that might entice me to switch? (I only have a few GB of indexes, covering a few million documents.)
lokl··on My Family and the Flood
If you have the opportunity to visit, I recommend Nagasaki over Hiroshima and especially these two places in Nagasaki:

Shiroyama Elementary School

Nagai Takashi Memorial Museum Nagasaki

These felt much more personal than anything I saw in Hiroshima and there were zero (other) tourists to interrupt the experience (very much unlike the museum in Hiroshima).

lokl··on Fujifilm X half: Is it the perfect family camera?
Used cameras and lenses can offer tremendous value.
lokl··on Mistral OCR
Tried with a few historical handwritten German documents, accuracy was abysmal.
lokl··on How Copyover MUD Servers Worked
MUDs were the most enjoyable social networks I ever experienced, and the least harmful to society.

lokl··on Ask HN: My son might be blind – how to best support
Contact (and, if you can, visit) one of the top ophthalmologists in the world, as soon as possible. You cannot take a risk that your local doctor is good enough.

lokl··on Mic Test
Audio-Technica ATR2100x, bought it for Zoom during the pandemic, very pleased. If you're in the market for an inexpensive upgrade, read the reviews for this. You will probably want to add a pop filter, even a very basic one makes a big difference. I use mine with a boom arm clamped to my desk.
lokl··on Archaeologists discover ancient drawings in a Spanish cave
Highly recommend visiting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pech_Merle if you are interested in cave paintings. Easy to access if you stay in Cahors the night before.
lokl··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
Thanks for commenting, as I'm not qualified to evaluate this. Authors providing such instructions should be commended, even if their result turns out to be false due to errors in measurement or interpretation.
lokl··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
Will they invite a wide range of experts to publicly test their material?
lokl··on Ongoing Incident in Google Cloud

lokl··on T-Mobile will start charging a $35 fee on all new activations and upgrades
I've been very happy with Tello. $5/month if, like me, you barely use your phone. Their 500 MB/month data plan with no voice minutes + one-time $20 pay-as-you-go minutes. Splitting data and voice like this means no taxes or fees, the total monthly bill is $5.
lokl··on The secret stretch of coastal France that's nicer than Nice
If you're in this area and like windsurfing, kitesurfing, or watching either, La Franqui is the place to go (40 km from Narbonne).
lokl··on Awesome Pascal – A curated list of Delphi, FreePascal, and Pascal shiny things
Thanks, appreciate it. Asking for a friend with 10+ years Delphi and MS SQL. Focus on warehouse management software for supermarkets, business analytics.
lokl··on Awesome Pascal – A curated list of Delphi, FreePascal, and Pascal shiny things
Any Delphi experts know of openings for remote devs from Ukraine (now in Germany)? Sorry if inappropriate to ask here, hope it's understood given the circumstances.
lokl··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring Ukrainian Refugees?
Thank you, will check it out.
lokl··on Akamai to Acquire Linode
Linode's been solid for me for 15 years, I only moved some projects to Hetzner for better pricing. Linode staff were always very helpful, nothing but positive experiences. Hope their support will remain great.
lokl··on Impacts of lack of sleep
If you haven't done so, try removing dust mites or other potential allergens from your bedroom.

lokl··on Tempera’s pleasing properties is how egg yolk interacts with pigment
For this reason, if you are considering working with powdered pigments, investigate whether you can instead use aqueous pigment dispersions. Should normally be fine for egg tempera.
lokl··on New Concerning Variant: B.1.1.529
You can view JHU's raw data sources at https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19. According to that, they are getting COVID death numbers for Sweden from the Swedish Public Health Agency via https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/09f821667ce64bf7be6.... I am not fluent in Swedish, but perhaps someone who is can tell you exactly how the Swedish Public Health Agency measures them. Likewise for the other countries cited.
lokl··on New Concerning Variant: B.1.1.529
According to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard, as of now, Sweden has had 15,145 deaths; Norway has had 1,050 deaths; Denmark 2,863; Finland 1,309. With populations from Wikipedia (10,402,070 for Sweden; 5,402,171 for Norway; 5,850,189 for Denmark; 5,536,146 for Finland), this yields deaths per 1,000 people of:

Sweden 1.456 Norway 0.194 Denmark 0.489 Finland 0.236

Saying Sweden has "just survived" doesn't capture these numbers well, I think. If this is "embarrassing" for anyone, it's Sweden, but I wouldn't use the word embarrassing. It's tragic.
