lelima··on Two potentially life-friendly planets found orbiting a nearby star
Time for the travelers will go slower, for earth time will be 450k years but for travelers will be less.

Can someone explain this situation, what if the travelers reach almost speed light, they will reach on 12 years from earth perspective but for them how long will it take?

lelima··on Dogs’ Eyes Have Changed Since Humans Befriended Them
The dog Image Processing Tool is pretty awesome, thanks for the link!

I wonder if is possible design glasses with the same goal.

lelima··on Food-Delivery Couriers Exploit Desperate Migrants in France
If illegal people can't access water in the desert, they won't go to the desert.

I might be wrong but I think that is what the government wants.

lelima··on Food-Delivery Couriers Exploit Desperate Migrants in France
I think that's better than nothing, I have a friend that he lived in Milano thanks to that.

Nobody wanted to hire him (cash in hand / illegal), and the only way to make anything was delivering food while he's status changed to permanent.

lelima··on Food-Delivery Couriers Exploit Desperate Migrants in France
The thing is they shouldn't be allowed to enter the desert in the first place, people that are legally allowed into the desert can buy water at a fair price.
lelima··on Small guide to making nice tables [pdf]
I though it was about database tables!

Interesting to see how different backgrounds change your first impression.

lelima··on Ask HN: Good tech talks on how analytics systems are implemented?
>>I'm more curios about the best tools and architectural patterns that work well with each other.

Well you can go with:

Fancy: Hdfs(distributed file system) as storage - oozie as workflow scheduler for your load(python/hive/scala/spark) - Tableau for visualization (your business ussers will love it.

Mid range: SQL Server as storage - Informatica for your workload - power BI /SSRS for visuals

Open/low budget: PostgreSQL / Cassandra for storage - make your own scheduler/ there is a post for ETL open score yesterday that might help - for visuals you can make it from scratch but hire a good designer!

This is based on my experience on industries like Gambling, Banking and Telecom

lelima··on It was 84 degrees near the Arctic Ocean this weekend
Are these numbers matching predictions?

"forecasts a temperature rise of 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century." [1].

I might be wrong but I feel like the temperatures are getting higher quicker than we think.

lelima··on Salesforce is buying Tableau for $15.7B
~15B vs ~2B

I think they evaluated very well

lelima··on Salesforce is buying Tableau for $15.7B
This is more common than you think
lelima··on A baboon who acted as assistant to a disabled railway signalman in South Africa
I wonder why they stop the training/business, we will have now baboon guides for blind people or something similar.
lelima··on Ask HN: Do you think technology progress will flatten out 100 years from now
I think the ecological collapse will be avoided, I take as example South Africa and the water crisis [1]. They predict the day 0 (out of water). As the day get closer, everyone started to ratiocinate the water, everybody realized that the problem was just ahead of them that the entire community helped and "the day 0" was moved several times.

It seems to me, but I might be wrong that we are procrastinating with global warming till the issue is really close, then the hair of everyone will stand and the entire population will help.

lelima··on Ask HN: How close together are your bus stops?
I live in Dublin and I take the bus everyday, is mad, I'm talking sometimes less than 50m.

The stop in front of my house and the next one is only three houses away, Georgian style, so no mansions or huge houses.

The transport in Dublin is horrible and is on top 5 of most expensive public transport systems. (No subway)

lelima··on Someone in New York is pulling emergency brakes, destroying subway commute
Well, one drone made a lot of financial damage in UK not so long ago, you don't need a lot of money to do a lot of damage, which is terrible.
lelima··on Interactive exploration of earnings by age and industry (2018)
I can't believe that lawyers are such an outlier, I though it was very close to engineering.

That's an average, I wonder the mean, maybe there are many lawyer whales pushing up the numbers.

lelima··on Ask HN: Low self confidence and self esteem. How to improve?
Three suggestions and reason why mate:

1)Do exercise: It will increase chemicals like serotonin, endorphins and dopamine making you feel way better.

2)Eat more healthy: If you reduce saturated fats and increase protein will impact your dopamine levels.

3)Book "a guide to the good life": The chapter #1 is very slow but the rest of the book is pure gold and I found it here in HN, I strongly recommend it.

lelima··on China’s new ‘social credit system’
They opinion don't affect the credit score, they currently live abroad. How can we evaluate the system? number of people likes / dislikes? National level of happiness?
lelima··on China’s new ‘social credit system’
Does anyone have visit China and presence the social system in first person?

I've heard that some people like it (Chinese co-workers), as they feel everyone acting better, but they don't live in China at the moment.

lelima··on A critical step to reduce climate change
There are around 1 Billion people right now without electricity[1].

For them is already a hostile planet. I wonder if their governments care more about the environment or provide more people with electricity.

lelima··on Race test – how much bias do you have?
Is common knowledge that cultures have a bias although I'm surprise that only 18% of the people don't have a preference Race ('Black - White')
lelima··on The Brain Needs Animal Fat
"My brains works just fine"

What if the article is true and you are only using, let's say 80% of your capacity.

It will be fun if you try to make some Sudoku or something similar and test the time, then eat those animal meat and try it out.

eg: When I drink coffee I become at least 20% better solving problems

lelima··on Ask HN: How do I ask for a raise?
Yes, was 20% more. But he said it was about 40%. They matched.
lelima··on Ask HN: How do I ask for a raise?
I have a good relationship with my manager, but I feel it hard to break the ice with Salary topics. It really hit my nerves
lelima··on The one-salary experiment, ten years in
Thanks for Sharing your story, now my question is, how to ask for a raise?

-just, I want a raise will do?

lelima··on Children for Sale, 1948
There are several birds and monkeys that try to give their children/eggs away. The bird places their eggs in another nest and then are feed by the host of that nest. I think that is an evolutionary advantage, the genes survive and the fathers have more time to feed themselves and have more eggs.

As humans we kind of do a similar thing, kindergartens, schools(other people that we don't know) rise our children and spend more time with them than us as parents.

As many times and many people in HN, I'll recommend this book: The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins

lelima··on Maya ritual cave ‘untouched’ for 1k years stuns archaeologists
Maya mia!
lelima··on Revolut CFO resigns following money laundering controversy

lelima··on Will A.I. Ever Be Smarter Than a Four-Year-Old?
I think we first have to scope what definition of intelligence we want to compare:

1)having good understanding or a high mental capacity; quick to comprehend, as persons or animals: an intelligent student.

2)displaying or characterized by quickness of understanding, sound thought, or good judgment: an intelligent reply.

3)having the faculty of reasoning and understanding; possessing intelligence: intelligent beings in outer space.

4)Computers. pertaining to the ability to do data processing locally; smart: An intelligent terminal can edit input before transmission to a host computer.

Depending on the definition computers already beat humans, not only 4 years old.

lelima··on The “10,000 Hours of Practice” Myth
I've heard Jordan Peterson saying that, which makes sense but, It makes me sad as well, about 1/10 people are just not able to learn skilled tasks.

I wonder if we evolve kind of similar to ants, which some are just explorers, some hard workers, other just defend the nest.

I think genes are the code that render us inside of the matrix :)

lelima··on Ask HN: What is your failure story?
Once I scale up Azure analysis services(main data source for company Marketing and decision making) cause we were running low memory in peak hours, only to find out that I couldn't scale down, increasing cost by 300%. I had to recreate all the models again in the old tier increasing even more the cost cause we have to maintain both data sources till I finish with the creation of the models. My boss was mad.~azure lvl 100 destruction~
