lelima··on Ask HN: What's the most interesting (non-AI) advancement in tech in 2023?
This Link it's gold, very interesting!
lelima··on Spain lives in flats: why we have built our cities vertically
Great point, imagine learning about Roman history and some 3d models of the Roman cities pops up.

Work environment have changed so much in the latest years and I feel school remained the same. Last week a young family member asked what does excel do? and she's about to enter college, and we're talking about Ireland that it supposed to have a good school system

lelima··on Don't work with assholes
I'm in the same boat, I guess everyone will like to see the bully being stopped, yet it's hard to act when you have the chance

lelima··on I'm sorry I bit you during my job interview (2011)
are they calling you? many companies have an automatic filter for CVs(one person won't read 200+ CV's), I was in the same boat till I used a CV parser, it digest your CV so programs can read it perfectly.

Then I was having almost 90% of call backs after sending the CV, I used this one https://www.open-resume.com/

lelima··on I'm sorry I bit you during my job interview (2011)
Once on a Data engineering interview I was explaining some diagrams and data flows when my nose decided to bleed, a lot.

The blood started to run over my white shirt, while I was still trying to explain why we were moving data from one database to another on a whiteboard, with one hand trying to stop the bleeding.

I got the job.

lelima··on A history of Ireland in 100 goodbyes
That's with family, with the lads/co-workers the Irish goodbye it's not saying anything and leave.
lelima··on Writing code with pencil and paper (2022)
I understand using paper for Diagrams and arquitechtual design, but for coding?

On college I remember having to code on paper and you simply can't test your code for typos or small error, even if your logic was perfect professor give you marks for a missing ';'

note: the class was evaluating the Logic / algorihtm not basic code syntax

lelima··on Adam? ... is there a reason your laptop is in the fridge? (2006)
I dont understand how come condensation while de-freezing didn't damaged the components, but if you spill a bit of water in the keybord might damage the laptop,

what brand was that laptop?

lelima··on Lost your luggage? That's nothing – we just lost your whole flight

How can London be at #1 if the methodology includes: Avilability of housing, Average time to comute, weather and Affordability
lelima··on Is Software Engineering Real Engineering?
What about day-to-day items, like well engineered wallet or water bottle, it's still engineering but the rigor still can be low, right?

I think even if rigor required it's low you can think of a good solution for a problem, feature or product

lelima··on Is Software Engineering Real Engineering?
>>you can't simply put up a bridge that would support 500 cars and say "oh we'll update it to support 5000 cars down the road"

In that case the requirement changed, it might require some extra support or upgrades to the bridge, if not we have to build the bridge all over again.

Similar in SWE, the requirement can change, if you planned a small MYSQL database to hold 2 Stores transactions and then "oh well we will need to support 2000 Stores Transactions" you might try upgrade the server or start from zero on a AWS cloud instance that keep up.

In SWE you still have the big decisions than can impact people and budget, a bridge can collapse, so the autopilot software can make the car crash

lelima··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hello Peter, I'm Italian and my wife it's American, we're living in Ireland,

What do I need to do for having a work permit in the US? and can the process be in Ireland?

we would like to move once I get a job (the job ask if I can legally work there)

lelima··on Data diffs: Algorithms for explaining what changed in a dataset (2022)
We're doing a env migration and we've been using spark diff extension for reconcile data, it's amazing, we've discover bugs in the data logic so quickly,

here is the extension if anyone is interested https://github.com/G-Research/spark-extension/blob/master/DI...

lelima··on Fuck being productive
Lately I've been booking meetings for quick walk with the dog or having a nap, or even watch 20 min episode of wherever, in the works hours,

I feel I'm more productive after having these small breaks and I feel way happier, anyone should try it

lelima··on Free websites that are so useful they feel illegal to know

lelima··on My Life as a Mentalist
Once in front of my colleagues put a piece of paper with some writing closed,

I asked one of them to pick a number between 1-4 (they were drawn in a another piece of paper) he picked 3, then I asked to another write the first veggie name that comes to their mind, he picked Carrot.

I open the piece of paper that I put at the beginning, the writing was 3 and Carrot.

They were amazed, one of them got scared of the situation,

The thing is that I wrote the numbers 1 and 2 smaller than the number 3 and the number 4 was in very bad handwrite, and the most common Veggie that people think first it's carrot

lelima··on Can you feed cats and dogs a vegan diet?
>>It has been calculated that beef cattle need 8g of feed in order to grow 1g of protein – whereas insects only need 2g to create 1g of protein.

That's impressive, I wonder if we can add more insects to our diets, or is too far from western culture?

lelima··on Google ordered to reveal author of Australian dentist's bad review
Why they can sue for defamation?

Is a valid opinion from my point of view

lelima··on Plastic Pollution
I though we didn't Incinerated plastic because of health reasons(toxic chemicals releases) and we burn more plastic than recycled.

Recycling: 19.5% Burning: 25.5% Discard: 50%

Revealing metric

lelima··on Millennial wealth deficit, in one chart
I always calculate the income of my grandfather against mine using [1] calculator, he was earning about 3k per month when he was about ~30. That's about 9.5k per month in today's money, I'm earning about 3.8k per month.

So is more than double, it kind of match the graph, which I found interesting.

lelima··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
wow that's handy!
lelima··on Ask HN: Do you write tests before the implementation?
>No. And also 'do you write a test for everything?'. Also No.

Same here and for the same reasons plus stuff in the backlog that takes more priority; At least on Finance, gambling and telecom industries that I've worked on

lelima··on The Rise of 'Facadism' in London
I live in Dublin and they do similar things but I haven't seen buildings not aligned like Thomas Lloyd is pub's in the article.

Sometimes can be pleasing entering an "old facade" but inside everything is brand new and modern.

lelima··on Ask HN: What do you use for sharing photos among your friends and family?
Google photos, create an album and just add people, I've done many times with many people and works great
lelima··on Diamonds Keep Getting Cheaper
I think most girls check somehow the ring/diamond value.
lelima··on Ask HN: How to Make a Good CV?
I feel like 1 page is not enough but at the same time I've heard recruiters spend only 7 sec reading a CV
lelima··on Deep Learning with PyTorch: A 60 Minute Blitz [video]

Sounds too good to be true? Jeremy have that effect, The other day in a podcast they told him Saint.
