lbebber··on Meta Paid $17B – Gets to Write Safety Rules for Other SocMedia Platform
In Brazil, communications do run entirely on WhatsApp, but payments are entirely on Pix.

Also I rememeber when there was a Meta-wide outage, and people switched to Telegram within the day, so the stranglehold they have might not be that strong.

lbebber··on Cursor Camp
Near the title sign, on the center of the camp, is where I found the last one I missed
lbebber··on Honda is killing its EVs
Weird, they do here in Brazil (Hybrid Civics as well). Must be a cost or regulatory thing more than anything else.
lbebber··on Ask HN: Do you know travel blogs that have animated SVG maps of their travels?
Thank you! I both programmed and designed this--I miss doing this kind of work.
lbebber··on Ask HN: Do you know travel blogs that have animated SVG maps of their travels?
Beautiful work! I thought the bus was a fun goofy touch on its first appearance hahah
lbebber··on Ask HN: Do you know travel blogs that have animated SVG maps of their travels?
Thank you, glad you like it!
lbebber··on Ask HN: Do you know travel blogs that have animated SVG maps of their travels?
Oh, I made this! (almost a decade ago, huh)
lbebber··on Ask HN: Do you know travel blogs that have animated SVG maps of their travels?
Oh, this was based off of a project I made for Codrops[1]. Let me know if you'd like some help or input!

lbebber··on Not an iPad Pro Review: Why iPadOS Still Doesn't Get the Basics Right
You can select text this way too; once it’s in “trackpad mode”, tap the keyboard with another finger, and it will start text selection.
lbebber··on People had to be convinced of the usefulness of electricity
We still refer to the electricity bill as the “light bill” in Brazil.
lbebber··on Apple gets $19M fine in Brazil for not selling iPhones with charger
Yes, that’s part of the intention of the law in fact, so that a company can’t advertise a lower price than the consumer would actually pay.
lbebber··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
A friend of mine was (is?) completely unfazed by this sort of thing--right from the start, it was not some resistance built up over time.

She left the profession due to the long hours, low pay, and poor treatment.

lbebber··on Settings are not a design failure
Yes but the decision to redesign something might be towards people who haven't figured it out, which if they are a large enough fraction might be worth the tradeoff.

(there are other reasons too of course, sometimes not really good ones)

lbebber··on Over-reliance on CGI in movies
CGI is great actually, and most people have no idea when they are watching CGI stuff.

It's just that being able to do just about anything, down to implausible camera movements, requires restraint, and sometimes that's lacking.

(also low budget stuff might look bad, but that applies for every single thing)

lbebber··on Over-reliance on CGI in movies
That's already a thing, people asking why "CGI is getting worse"
lbebber··on What 3°C of global warming looks like
There was no snow in São Paulo AFAIK; and snow in the south of Brazil, which did happen, happens more or less yearly.

(just a minor correction, not arguing against your general point)

lbebber··on Car accidents cause death, injury and trauma. Why do we shrug them off?
Hahah I don't know if you meant that sarcastically, but I think I fit into that description--I do like, even love, driving, etc., but I do hate most of the consequences of having cars around.
lbebber··on Original 1851 reviews of Moby-Dick
Awesome, thanks for the recommendation
lbebber··on Original 1851 reviews of Moby-Dick
I didn't really care for the story itself that much, I was more fascinated by the whaling culture and the glimpse it provided of the views of that time and place, along with its fantastic writing. Which is why for me it wasn't a slog at all.
lbebber··on Brazil prisoners reading books to shorten their sentences (2020)
The word “literacy” also derives from familiarity with letters, but from latin instead of greek.
lbebber··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
I live in the south of Brazil, it's pretty safe, but it depends on the city.

You can go pretty far with 1k USD here. Also pretty well served in terms of free healthcare, but I don't know how it works for foreigners.

lbebber··on Widescreen Gaming in the 90s
Related--with great timing, as it was just released--, Super Mario World Widescreen https://twitter.com/HackerVilela/status/1405972177225191427
lbebber··on AirTag Teardown Part One: Yeah, This Tracks
Hahah the coin x-ray thing was great
lbebber··on Gab has been hacked and 70GB of data leaked
Well I did say "exacerbated", not caused by it hahah
lbebber··on Gab has been hacked and 70GB of data leaked
In Brazil it has been exacerbated by the legacy of the military dictatorship, openly defended by the current president, and lately by the high number of deaths caused by COVID and the reactions (or lack thereof) to that.
lbebber··on Dev Fonts
It is also my favourite. It's just narrow enough for using with multiple columns, but not too narrow that it affects legibility for me, and it's event customizable, for my nitpicky preferences.
lbebber··on Show HN: WebGL simulation of rainy autumn day/evening
Also thanks, I'm particularly proud of that map hahah
lbebber··on Show HN: WebGL simulation of rainy autumn day/evening
Hmmm I'm not sure if it could be properly used to circumvent ad blocking, after all the ads will still probably come from a separate request which one could block.

However I do see it being used for web apps that prioritise performance--in terms of providing a smooth experience, rather than load times. I think Figma already does that (through emscripten or wasm, I'm not sure); for it to be more widespread, only the tooling has to catch up (e.g. React Native).

lbebber··on Show HN: WebGL simulation of rainy autumn day/evening
Well it has sound it seems, which might actually be more important depending on what you're looking for.
lbebber··on Show HN: WebGL simulation of rainy autumn day/evening
There's no good reason, to my shame. But now that you mention, I think I'll get around to it and do it this week. Might be a good opportunity to round down a few rough edges here and there as well.
