laserdancepony··on Dude,Where's My Donations? Wikimedia gives another $1M to non-Wikimedia projects
Because it's been the way the world works for some years now. No need to double-check anymore.
laserdancepony··on Is Germany once again the sick man of Europe?
To disagree is also racism now, how insightful.
laserdancepony··on UK birth slump dubbed ‘good for planet’
Look at the Kosovo to get a grasp of why it's not a good idea.
laserdancepony··on Is Germany once again the sick man of Europe?
If you were so highly qualified as you say, you‘d know about the sunken cost fallacy. So get out of Germany and move somewhere else you are happy.
laserdancepony··on Going back to the old (pre-X) Twitter iOS app
Classic cancel culture mindset.
laserdancepony··on Some problems with 'first name' and 'last name' fields in data
I think it‘s all about your target audience. I‘ve never bothered with Native American or Middle Eastern Edge cases because all of my clients serve white Europeans that fit into the two name scheme 99.999%. So I won‘t go the extra mile to optimise for the 1 in 100,000. Why should I? There will be no ROI.
laserdancepony··on Bath-obsessed ancients (2016)
Generalization par excellence. I‘ve been there and won’t concur with your assessment.
laserdancepony··on Rectify11 Improving upon the Windows 11 experience
Best argument ever: "Stop complaining, you are using it wrong!". Parent paid by MS for sure.
laserdancepony··on The antitrust trial against Google is starting in September
I can't take your RCS argument seriously. You do realize it's just a scheme from the carriers to bill you for every message again like they did with SMS? Good riddance. I don't need that on my iPhone, thank Jobs.

And for the headphone jacks, I'd rather take a water resistant phone without this legacy connector. Do you also want serial ports back?

laserdancepony··on Mac Mouse Fix
I use SmoothScroll for hassle-free scrolling with my non-Apple mouse, works just fine.

And you are the only one who can see clearly through everything. How nice.
laserdancepony··on Google Employee Accuses WEI-Opponents of Being “Criminals”
To make life more miserable for everyone except members of the new aristocracy and bourgeoisie is a divine principle now?
laserdancepony··on Google Employee Accuses WEI-Opponents of Being “Criminals”
That's the problem with our overly supportive safe space culture. People who can't handle being in charge get to be in charge. Thanks for that.
laserdancepony··on US smartphone shipments fall sharply, but Android more than iPhone
I've had numerous iDevices over the years and not a single one failed anyhow. No iPhone, no iPad, no Power Mac, no Macbook, no mac Mini. And I got a trade in worth 40 bucks on my still working 2013 iPad when I bought my 2021 one.

Come on, please do not kill all the fun stuff we have for your CRT PC stuff. I prefer it the old fashioned way.
laserdancepony··on The Secretive World of Penile Enlargement
It's insane to imagine a hard shelled device implanted into a penis, the most volatile organ of the body that can change volume in seconds according to ambient and body temperature and state of arousal. The idea makes me physically sick.
laserdancepony··on The Secretive World of Penile Enlargement
NGL, had me in the first half.
laserdancepony··on Windows Update Restored: Fix Windows update on Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP
I still don't know why both are so slow. Upgrading my mostly vanilla Devuan boxes costs me a few seconds to minutes and restarts are only to switch kernels.
laserdancepony··on Windows Update Restored: Fix Windows update on Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP
It was unsupported to jump releases while upgrading twenty years ago when upgrading woody to sarge as is now. Don't spread rumours. I've been there and the READMEs are still online for reference [1]. And unsupported does not mean impossible. One just can't blame the distro for a failed install.

And if you had bothered to read the Release Notes for bookworm: It's in there [2]. Also you are instructed that only upgrades from bullseye are supported, and to upgrade to bullseye first if you are running an older version.

Nobody else to blame for your fall.

It's only funny if you're not getting the short end of the stick. Most HN readers forget that b/c they profit from tech.

> Right now my For You tab is filled with content I wouldn't have dreamed of a year or two ago, fight videos, videos of people dying, race war, gender war, you name it. Elon is egging it on, it's a complete mess.

Censoring the aforementioned topics does not make them go away, time has shown that. And Megacorps controlling the public Overton window has just lead to society boiling and rumbling in the dark.

The employer would surely love that to avoid liability.
laserdancepony··on Texas airport worker dies after being sucked into Delta jet engine
Best of luck to the poor coroner.
laserdancepony··on Ask HN: How do you find high quality mobile games?
Depends on the game. I gladly paid for Monument Valley (one of the finest mobile games I ever played) but would never pay for crap like Flappy Bird.
laserdancepony··on Ask HN: How do you find high quality mobile games?
Oftentimes the games are just cleaned up versions of their microtransaction-ridden originators, bearing the same incentivisation mechanics just without having to pay money. So that's pointless then.
laserdancepony··on Ask HN: How do you find high quality mobile games?
It's the same for me in the Mac App Store. There seems to be only iOS shovelware crap in the Games section. And the Apple Arcade games are mostly 'cleaned up' versions of the F2P games e.g. no more microtransaction currency to buy, but the boring mechanics to incentivise buying them are still there.

I had more luck on 3rd-party sites like itch.

laserdancepony··on Call for Germany to scrap English lessons in primary schools
And here someone won the Godwin award again. That was fast.

Fascinating how your adversary is having a well mannered argument and you derail it to call him a nazi. Takes one to know one, I think.

laserdancepony··on The odd appeal of absurdly long YouTube videos
On Windows I've been using "Don't Sleep" [1] and have now switched to "PowerToys Awake" [2] for one-click sleep prevention. On macOS I've used Caffeine [3] for that purpose. KDE on the other hand already has a built-in check box to prohibit sleeping in the power/battery control applet.

There seems to be quite a market for this teeny tiny tools.
