lasc4r··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
Sounds like a good system until the Federalist Society and a generation of Christian judicial activism showed up and gave us a handful of partisan judges.
lasc4r··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
I wonder if the majority cares about climate change. My guess is they don't.
lasc4r··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
>But, the Supreme Court should not be responsible for managing dysfunction in other branches of govt.

In a better system it shouldn't be, in the system we have really should be but isn't.

I have little doubt Clarence is only a little less crazy than his wife. Republicans put these people into positions of immense power. They might not have known how much power at the time, but they put shitty people in power for shitty reasons and they can now totally own that failure.

>Crazed jesus Republicans and hyperprogressive activists are terrible people to put into national office.

Got some enlightened centrism at work here. I'm willing to entertain that the left is way too woke, but they aren't sending crazy people to congress my dude.

lasc4r··on I turned down $500k, pissed off my investors, and shut down my startup (2016)
Yeah, no.
lasc4r··on California Right to Repair Bill Dies in Senate Committee
They aren't doing it because they are evil - that's totally silly. They're doing it because they hold what I consider to be bad ideas around supporting the public good and it's simply in their best interest to pay less taxes and have a less educated and more compliant workforce in the process.

Betsy Devos is a billionaire private school activist that Trump appointed. The less they need to worry about public opinion the better, it's the same reason they've succeeded so wildly in controlling the Supreme Court. Their strategy with the Federalist Society has been to work around what is popular, no majority would vote to overturn Roe. Public education is definitely on their minds now.

lasc4r··on California Right to Repair Bill Dies in Senate Committee
I don't think it's a stretch to assume malice, billionaires are running the show and they aren't nice people that want to build a better world. If they want a population of poor, ignorant and unengaged worker drones they're doing great though.
lasc4r··on See's Candies is Warren Buffett’s ‘dream’ investment
The two strategies don't seem that different, one lowers quality the other massively hikes prices. Customers are getting ripped off either way.
lasc4r··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
It did indeed make more sense to me to go to war for a strategic, scare and faraway military resource than to go through all that effort for fertilizer.
lasc4r··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
Based on playing Civ I just assumed they were mostly valuable for their use in making gunpowder.
lasc4r··on Are we running out of resources?
Not that your point is wrong, but the EU has plans to cut their gas and oil imports from Russia by two thirds in the next year. And I'm guessing cutting them off entirely in the next few years. It's not feasible to do much more than that I think, they will be making real sacrifices, like implementation of rationing in Germany.
lasc4r··on UnDUNE II – The Demaking of a Dynasty
If the goal was to recreate the original then that's fine I guess, but I don't see why anyone would want to actually play that game. My hand and arm hurt from playing for 25 mins.
lasc4r··on To avoid Finland’s tax a 1,000HP imported Hennessey RAM is limited to 55MPH
If we're getting technical I think spending $272,000 on anything is going to have some environmental costs in line with spending $272,000.
lasc4r··on [dead]
That makes sense, the health claims should have been a dead giveaway.
lasc4r··on [dead]
Agreed, I like their predictions but I would guess 20 or 30 years for most of them, not 8.

They think milk will be easier than meat, but I'm skeptical. Milk is a commodity, the price farmers got over the last decade has ranged from about $14-21 per hundredweight. At $20 per hundredweight that's $1.70 per gallon. In my mind that's pretty inexpensive competition.

They also seem to be pushing the idea that these synthetic proteins are going to be much healthier. I'll gladly wait for more data on that.

lasc4r··on U.S. house prices are rising exponentially faster than income
I was trying to get an idea of what Japanese house prices are, but I couldn't find much beyond the cost of a new house. Which is less than in the US, but not by much more than 10-20%. I understand houses in Japan don't typically appreciate in value like they do in the US though. They like to buy new and don't see it as an investment.

I assume a huge factor has to simply be that Japan's GDP and population growth has been basically flat for ~25 years.

lasc4r··on Is nuclear power our best bet against climate change?
Aren't there fail-safe designs for newer reactors? Whatever tiny risk exists would be worth taking IMO.
lasc4r··on Conterintuitive facts in mathematics, CS, and physics
Thank you, something about this didn't make total sense to me.
lasc4r··on Treating beef like coal would make a big dent in greenhouse-gas emissions
Transportation and cooling of meat in particular is nothing compared to the land area of North America and South America combined that we devote to growing crops to feed livestock.

lasc4r··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
So you're not getting vaccinated and you've convinced yourself it's for pro-social reasons. Misinformation truly is something to behold.
lasc4r··on What will programming look like in 2020? (2012)
FYI, specialize is the American spelling.

Calling ff a mess is worse, as someone that absolutely hates ads it's a godsend.
lasc4r··on New Anti Anti-Money Laundering Services for Crooks
Maybe, but if it's not broke, don't fix it. There seems to be very little political will to do much about money laundering.
lasc4r··on WHO inquiry chief 'had concerns' about lab close to first Covid cases
From day one it's been silly to assume any outbreak of a virus is from a lab leak without evidence.

>Other billionaires are working on some of the problems on your list, too, if that makes you feel better. The most prominent one being Bill Gates. He's working on the "we lose millions a year to disease" portion of your list. Do you hate on Bill Gates because he isn't solving world peace ("fighting wars" on your list)?

Relying on the goodwill of billionaires is a problem.

>We need to push forward now to have a chance.

We need to get our house in order now to have a chance. I don't know how that isn't obvious.

lasc4r··on Sueface temperatures in Siberia heat up to a mind boggling 118 degrees
A bit misleading, assuming someone could be misled into thinking Siberia was 118c.
lasc4r··on Earth is trapping twice as much heat as it did in 2005
I'm not sure what you're getting at, are you under the impression that ocean temps haven't gone up by 1c since industrialization? Because they have.
