lasc4r··on Why did Crunchyroll's subtitles just get worse?
Reminds me of products on Amazon with little to know information about the product and photoshopped images. Somehow it was worth making, but selling? Who can be bothered.
lasc4r··on The Windows 10 emoji picker has been broken for a month
Do you normally associate emojis with creating documents?
lasc4r··on GPT-5
If LLMs are an AGI dead end then this has all been the greatest scam in history.
lasc4r··on GPT-5
These companies seem to think AGI will come from better LLMs, seems more like an AGI dead end that's plateaued to me.
lasc4r··on The Chan-Zuckerbergs stopped funding social causes
Or more plausibly they never cared and it was just PR all along.
lasc4r··on The Chan-Zuckerbergs stopped funding social causes
>I don't think we can claim that either is strictly more reliable than the other

In the article it was schools that were defunded. Does the government have a history of consistently funding schools?

lasc4r··on Robots that learn
They (AI Corp. Execs) seem to think LLMs will be central to AGI. They are the experts I guess, but I have my doubts.
lasc4r··on Dogs may have domesticated themselves because they liked snacks, model suggests
Yeah this finding is not surprising in the least.
lasc4r··on USAID funding freeze disrupts global tuberculosis control efforts
I think the goal is to destroy US soft power on the way to undermining the rule of law and destroying what passes for a rules-based international order. Once that's done they can really get busy stamping out democracy.
lasc4r··on USAID funding freeze disrupts global tuberculosis control efforts
Repercussions? That's for people who expect to be held accountable for their actions.
lasc4r··on Station of despair: What to do if you get stuck at end of Tokyo Chuo Rapid Line
-Random cones everywhere
lasc4r··on Cryptocurrency Turns to Cash in Russian Banks
I used to think crypto was a ponzi scheme, but now I think it's more of a huge boon criminal enterprises in general. There should be conspiracy theories about the Russian or North Korean origins of Satoshi Nakamoto.
lasc4r··on The price of shutting down coal power, and what would be gained
There's something to be said for a dictatorship that at the very least thinks climate change is real.
lasc4r··on 1M people have joined Bluesky in the last day
I'm not sure you're aware of what's happening on Twitter, but for starters it's called X now for some reason, crazy I know.
lasc4r··on The Onion buys Infowars
They should name it X
lasc4r··on Starship's Sixth Flight Test
I think it's a cool achievement, but for some perspective NASA first did a vertical rocket ship landing without chopsticks decades ago.

And the whole point of this thing was to do that on the moon, which is never going to happen at this rate.

lasc4r··on Apex Legends is taking away its support for the Steam Deck and Linux
Getting a win is the intermittent reward players get from these battle royale games against 20 or so other teams, when a hacker ruins that it's pretty annoying.
lasc4r··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
Not who you asked, but the daily ones I sometimes watch are Reporting From Ukraine and Denys Davydov.
lasc4r··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
That's a paid service that some people balk at.
lasc4r··on How economical is your local Taco Bell?
The box with a few things in it is not too bad.
lasc4r··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
Hacker News is far worse in terms of disallowed content. Must be full of the most vile and twisted minds on the internet!
lasc4r··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
Really? Aren't gore videos legal? That's just one example.

Also, can we get some common sense here? You're posting on hacker news. You're allowed to post a very narrow set of things here. There are no shitposts and memes, that's half the content of the internet being censored on this platform. Are you not outraged?

lasc4r··on Artificial intelligence is losing hype
>We've run the 4-minute mile.

>We are in for radical non-linear change.

We aren't running miles much quicker than 4 mins though. The last record was 3m:43s set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999.

lasc4r··on The Authoritarian Playbook (2022)
Republicans have been calling their "enemies" communists for years, the actual politicians that the people elected. Democrat politicians don't generally behave like that, but if there ever were a time this would be it.
lasc4r··on Susan Wojcicki has died
It hardly needs to be violently racist or whatever conception you have in your mind to be fascist propaganda. Rather the opposite if you take a minute to consider what makes for effective propaganda.
lasc4r··on Susan Wojcicki has died
My dad uses it to get fascist/right-wing propaganda for about 4 hours every night. All nicely monetized for any grifter willing to debase themselves for a potential fortune. Truly novel, but not well thought through or done with any care at all besides profits which is par for the course in silicon valley.
lasc4r··on Move over, tractor – The farmer wants a crop-spraying drone
For niche spraying where you can't get to the ground I'd rather see a robot on little slits or something. If you can get to the ground, well, those chemicals are heavy and drones run on pretty terrible batteries.

>These tractors can cost up to half a million dollars to purchase and about US $7 a hectare to operate.

>A pair of Hylio’s drones cost a fifth of that, Erickson says, and operating them costs about a quarter of the price.

About zero farmers are buying a tractor solely for spraying crops, but honestly if you have the money for a new tractor, knock yourself out with a stupid drone, why not?

lasc4r··on When a black hole and a neutron star merge
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutron_star#Structure

I think you're misremembering, we don't know what's at the center of a neutron star, or that there aren't other, more dense, types of stars.

lasc4r··on The Lord of the Rings Family Tree
In like 15 mins I learned that Perin had a child that he named Farmir and that Aragorn (II) is a descendant of Elrond's twin brother who were both just half-elves themselves as their parents were both half-elven. And between Elrond and Aragorn there's like 60 generations of men.

Never really been interested in LotR lore, but I've read them multiple times and seen the movies many more times. Never seemed worth the times and sounded like dry work compared to the novels, but yeah this is pretty cool!

lasc4r··on Innocent St. Louis family terrorized in SWAT raid over stolen AirPods
Police seem to have group-based mental problems that short circuits basic decency and common sense.
