lanecwagner··on Show HN: SHA-256 explained step-by-step visually
I wrote this one: https://app.qvault.io/course/6321ddbf-49eb-4748-9737-6bc12e8...

it's a crypto course where you write the solutions in Go. you might enjoy it :)

lanecwagner··on Teaching how to code is broken
I agree there are so many issues with coding education, (full disclosure, that's why I'm building Qvault.io) but I don't think the big problems are the ones presented here.

I see the following as the biggest unsolved problems:

1. Online learning rarely teaches you what you should be learning. Resources are useless if you don't know which subject matter is right for you yet. 2. Platforms don't give you a feel for "completion", e g. when and how should I start job searching. 3. You don't get personal mentorship or cohort support like you would at school 4. Too many videos, not enough code. Almost all learning when it comes to coding should include writing code. 5. Healthy mix of guided and unguided learning. Courses are great for abstract concepts, projects need to follow so that you can apply what you learn on your own

lanecwagner··on More than 1M fewer students are in college, the lowest numbers in 50 years
College simply isn't the most effective way to be learning these days. Especially for undergraduate degrees, places like Kahn Academy, Qvault.io (mine) and FreeCodeCamp are working really well
lanecwagner··on Make the internet yours again with an instant mesh network
Minecraft lifted it too
lanecwagner··on Features of a dream programming language
It says a lot that most of this is counter inspired by Ruby
lanecwagner··on Skillsoft Buys Codecademy for $525M
I've been working an an alternative to codeacademy, particularly one focused on closing skills gaps before job placement, and on building a tighter knit community. from a business perspective, this is great news for me I think xD
lanecwagner··on Miami is banking on cryptocurrency and New York wants in
Bitcoin has only been around for 12 years, and went from 0 to 69k dollars. How has it been in a recession for the last 12 years?
lanecwagner··on Web Workers API
I built a little golang playground using web workers and WASM. It's nice to not hang the UI thread. https://app.qvault.io/playground/go
lanecwagner··on Why don’t we just open the windows? Covid-19 prevention lost in translation
not a great metaphor imo. gives the impression masks and distance do nothing, and we know they do
lanecwagner··on I hate password rules
I write a Go package because I have similar feelings. https://GitHub.com/wagslane/go-password-validator
lanecwagner··on Hackerrank DMCA Notice
Don't use em.
lanecwagner··on Lambda School leaked documents show poor performance over the last two years
This is exactly why I started building https://qvault.io over a year ago. Boot camps are full of shit, they aren't teaching all they need to. We need an alternative to college that isn't expensive and based on exaggerations and lies.
lanecwagner··on Why nobody hires junior developers and what happens next
I've been talking about this for a minute. Boot camps are pushing the "you can make tons of money in just 4 weeks" narrative. CS skills are ironically becoming a huge differentiator. that's why I've been indiehacking on https://qvault.io
lanecwagner··on Udemy S-1 IPO
They do an okay job for video courses, but videos are just so dull for coding. That's why I built https://qvault.io maybe someday ill have time to make it an interactive course marketplace
lanecwagner··on Double-Odd Elliptic Curves
For anyone that needs an intro to ECC in general: https://qvault.io/cryptography/elliptic-curve-cryptography/
lanecwagner··on Show HN: Go playground powered by WASM that runs in the browser
awesome! I made one just like it about a year ago: https://app.qvault.io/playground/go

it actually powers some of the courses in go that I've written as well

lanecwagner··on A case against syntax highlighting (2007)
maybe not anymore, now that we all use and love highlighting. but maybe back then?
lanecwagner··on No medical/religious vaccine passport exemption will be made in British Colombia
religious I get, but medical? medical? what?
lanecwagner··on Learn Python by doing fun interactive exercises
Hmm... very similar to what I'm building at https://qvault.io - inspires me to improve my UI though
lanecwagner··on OSSU: Path to a free, self-taught education in computer science
OSSU does a great job. I recently started building a CS curriculum with a focus on giving students a single interactive place to get all the material. You can check it out here if interested: https://GitHub.com/Qvault/curriculum
lanecwagner··on Stop mocking your system
I recently wrote an eerily similar piece. My focus is more on unit test but the idea is the same: https://qvault.io/clean-code/writing-good-unit-tests-dont-mo...
lanecwagner··on Lambda School agrees to end deceptive educational financing practices
Welp, it seems like this was a good year to create a CS education platform. I've always been disatisfied with boot camps, I feel that for most people online learning is a better route. You can see what I'm building on https://qvault.io
lanecwagner··on Religious fervour is migrating into politics
Any non sub links?
lanecwagner··on Ask HN: How can I learn to be a cyber security expert?
Take a course or two in cryptography if you haven't already. Once you understand the basics, move on to the application level and learn about best practices. Afaik the best way is via courses, a lot of online reading, and even better, on the job training if you can get a security-related job
lanecwagner··on Practical Cryptography for Developers
Oh dang, I might need to rename the course I published a few months ago... https://qvault.io/practical-cryptography-course/

At first glance, looks like a solid book. I'll be going through it in more detail later.

lanecwagner··on Donald Trump is creating his own social media network
and the echo chambers isolate further...
lanecwagner··on Coursera S-1 IPO
None taken - but it really is. You could argue that my "direct" competitors are the people making courses on those platforms, but decisions coursera makes affects their courses directly.
lanecwagner··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
This clip from cobra kai really made me rethink censorship for some reason: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8VGzyy5FTY
lanecwagner··on Negotiate Your Dang Salary
"read this book". nah, was expecting a tl;dr
lanecwagner··on Coursera S-1 IPO
I wonder if this is good or bad for my competitor site...
