karol··on How the iPhone Ruins Walking
Can't help it but think this is written from a position of a someone who doesn't have a long to do list and chooses the passage of emotions and frankly boredom as entertainment. Nothing wrong with that, however with the times being gloomy and oppressive as they are I would think this type of activity will be chosen less and less.
karol··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
Once this changes the prospective employees will turn to other application strategies such as depicted in the famous graphic "will code html for food".
karol··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
All it does is it shows we are still in employee driven market, hence the recession hasn't hit yet.
karol··on Using satellites to uncover large methane emissions from landfills
Why bother with mini farts when there are far larger methane leaks? https://www.ecowatch.com/methane-leak-russia-coal-mine.html A clear case of over-focusing on the problem.

Should I applaud that in a few years we will be able to visualise individual animals' methane emissions when clearly this follows a Pareto distribution and shutting down the largest offenders will have the greatest impact.

Instead it seems we want to congratulate ourselves again that we created more data points about our methane-guilt. It is clear to me that if this kind of tech can be used to slap fines on people it will. And so we can create new markets for allowable methane emissions!

karol··on Using grape harvest dates to estimate summer temperature over 650 years
Good stuff. Still it's worth to look at the the ice core data from Greenland drilling.
karol··on Who do we spend time with across our lifetime? (2020)
You, not the average graph of all people's choices, are in control of your life major turns.
karol··on Ask HN: What does Full-Stack Developer even mean?
Some very nice answers here already. I would extend the definition of "a stack" to any plain where some wizardry is performed that is not trivial to learn. By doing this I am suggesting that a full stack developer or a generalist or a an entrepreneur are actually quite related.

These are the people who can see the big picture and have "enough skills to be dangerous" in each field. These skills are user experience, user interface, getting things done, communication, programming in various languages, architecture and devops, debugging and bug fixing.

Of course on the lower level there is API design, writing type safe code.

And on the even lower level there is optimising SQL queries, writing Chromium patches, designing network protocols, defining new EcmaScript primitives. These are extremely specific skills and people who can do them might have more narrow and deeper experise.

It ended up being a bit o a ramble, hope it hints at a useful perspective.

karol··on The richer people get, the more meat they eat
Fully agreed. Also I have a feeling the opposite might also be true - the more meat a person eats the bigger their chances to get good levels of energy and cognitive skills required to increase earning potential.
karol··on Ask HN: I'm in a rut. How did you get out of yours?
Google The Hustlers University.
karol··on Pioneering economist says our obsession with growth must end
Sounds like a limiting belief.
karol··on If You’re Scared You’re Winning (2019)
It's a crazy question. Obviously she has just given birth. Why would we brainwash women into think they account to nothing if they don't ALSO have a "career"?
karol··on People with low BMI aren't more active, they are just less hungry, 'run hotter'
If you are an engineer you are intelligent enough to work out how your metabolism works and make changes. What would be a reason to stay fat?
karol··on Thoughts on the potato diet
All crazy elimination diets work short term. The true measure of a diet is the one you can live on for years and be healthy.
karol··on DRY is an over-rated programming principle?
You should have called the blog post "DRY considered harmful" and go down in history.
karol··on Dutch farmers organise mass protests in face of farm closures
What makes you think the description is incorrect? Even following your own account the title of the article is spot on.

The rest of the emissions story is the overarching narrative that we "must" cut some emissions and therefore food production must be reduced and hence food prices must increase.

karol··on Ask HN: CS grad who barely knows any CS
Don't try to make yourself perfect, instead figure out what you'd like to do.
karol··on New GitHub Profile Badges Beta
Looks woke
karol··on GitHub Résumé: Service that creates a résumé based on your GitHub repos/activity
Using this means devaluing your software related skills. Do not do that!
karol··on Ask HN: Have we screwed ourselves as software engineers?
Excellent question. Esp. the final bit where you ask about 'the business value'. It is actually closer to just 'value' - as experienced by the users.

If you are in a position where you see piling up complexity does not bring in more satisfied users and more money that is a great time to set up a simpler competitor that will do things on the cheap in a less complex way.

karol··on I put my whole life into a single database
This is super cool. However over the years I have seen super cool things being noticed by powerful organisations and made mandatory for the greater good of the corporation or the society. I would not like to see that happen with this one.
karol··on The Beautiful Mind-Bending of Stanislaw Lem (2019)
Native Polish speaker.

To get out the max of this poem you need to be versed in Polish lang of course, but also mathematics and basic history of Polish literature.

The poem is a mock-erotyk (quasi "poem about lovemaking") where the mechanics of love are replaced with mechanics of mathematics. It works very well with całka (integral) which creates a fantastic replacement całkować (determine integral) instead of całować (kiss).

The other place that speaks volumes about this being satirical is an almost word for word quote from Polish national epos called "Pan Tadeusz": Wiele trzeba cię cenić, ten się dowie tylko" (Much you must be valued, he will only know), which for a Pole is an instantly recognisable stylistic device.

It also mentions a lot of math which is either made up or way above my head so I won't comment about that.

karol··on Chimpanzees observed applying and giving medicine
Could you use dog's blood for transfusion? No. But you could use chimpanzee blood in humans.
karol··on Chimpanzees observed applying and giving medicine
We are 98.4 identical genetically with chimpanzees. In other words, if another entity, not humans, created the biological kingdom taxonomy we would end up being called the same species.
karol··on Accounts to Support Ukrainian Army Directly via Bank of Ukraine
Why would anyone send money to a foreign country army? You elect your politicians to do that for you using taxes.
karol··on Ruling party figures say Poland has Pegasus spyware
And maybe UK, and maybe Austria, and maybe Australia? Check the work of Edward Snowden, see who shares data with the NSA.
karol··on Ruling party figures say Poland has Pegasus spyware
I don't see anything here that other countries don't do and then cover it up and put on a democratic facade.
karol··on Ask HN: Why have we accepted the cookie pop-up situation across the web?
That sounds nonsensical, when people visit your website they run your code using their CPUs and electricity. You also get their attention and may even influence their heart rates and breathing patterns.
karol··on Acquisition of chess knowledge in AlphaZero
Yes, it has been done with go and Deep Mind. The program found novel patterns of playing that were not known. I don't see why this wouldn't happen with chess.
karol··on Can we stomach the latest emerging food innovations?
> Convincing, nutritious, cheap artificial meat could turn the world vegetarian.

You wrongly assume people in general want to or need to be vegetarian. We evolved to eat and digest animal based foods.

karol··on Genetic Evolution Was a Prelude to Mimetic Evolution
> Although you can work out in the gym and increase the size of your biceps, that doesn’t mean your children are going to inherit those characteristics.

Our evolving understanding of genetics show a less black-and-white picture than this sentence does. We can trigger certain genes through behaviours, which would otherwise remain dormant, which in turn can be passed onto our offspring.
