karlerss··on Cloudflare outage – 24 hours now
How much work was the migration? Were the APIs feature-compatible or did you lose functionality?
karlerss··on Outlook now ignores Windows' Default Browser and opens links in Edge by default
The web based outlook is an extremely well-polished and usable piece of software. You can use it in any browser you like.
karlerss··on Finland's plan to bury spent nuclear fuel for 100k years
But we did leave a stockpile of weapons and ammo. It's a minor inconvenience.

karlerss··on Go with PHP
I've been building on Laravel for some years now and I'm always delighted how you can just ctrl+click and see the internals (and the magic). They're pretty modular and extensible/overridable.
karlerss··on I am done. I give up
Finding the right people has made entrepreneurship bearable for me. And I didn't find those right people on my first attempt either.

Staying disciplined for years is so much easier when you have competent and compassionate cofounders with you. You might even get away with a few vacations.

karlerss··on Hetzner continues its growth in the US with a new location
I'll add a +1 to managed database product. We've migrated all workloads except main application servers to Hetzner. Having a managed DB service (with backups, point-in-time recovery, etc) would have us quitting AWS in an instant.
karlerss··on Classifying Minds
Consciousness is inherently temporal. Our "AI-s" should not be prompt-based, but have an event loop which is always "thinking" about the things that are encoded in it, inputs it's currently receiving, and previous inputs it has received so far.
karlerss··on Books are physically changing because of inflation
Alternatively, if you know the type of literature, you can call it a novel or a poetry collection.

karlerss··on Why Is Wine (Almost) Always Made from Grapes?
If you add sugar in 1:2 ratio to fruits and use a wine yeast, you'll get 12% abv wine.
karlerss··on Estonia clocks fastest inflation in the Eurozone at 20.1 percent
Can confirm. Mine is 1.63% + 6mo euribor rate (which was just raised over 0%). When you have the future possibility of 5% mortages, people will think twice about buying the currently expensive real assets.

On the other hand - can't say that real estate is exactly overvalued - recently they've been driven by rising construction and material costs.

karlerss··on Find a good available .com domain
I wish someone just distributed a recent .com zone file.
karlerss··on Modern PHP
With monospaced fonts, as used in programming, the ligatures take up 2 or more "spaces", but the special characters only take up one space. Thus, they are quite easily distinguished, for me.
karlerss··on Map of Surnames in Europe

karlerss··on Less secure apps and your Google Account
Is this turning off IMAP access to gmail mailboxes?
karlerss··on Huginn: System for building agents that perform automated tasks online
Wow, Temporal is an interesting find.

I thought of creating a similar tool just for marketing automation. I built a landing page [0], but haven't had the time to talk to potential customers.

karlerss··on Japan HP accidentally deleted 77TB data in Kyoto U. supercomputing system
When communicating non-critical data-loss to teammates, I like to do it with this haiku:

  Three things are certain:
  Death, taxes, and lost data.
  Guess which has occurred.
From https://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/error-haiku.en.html
karlerss··on Is Web3 anything?
In OP article the interfacing with real world is solved by some group voting.

In the real world, when disagreements arise, we have voting + due process + a hierarchy of courts. It could be argued that due process is an essential part of finding justice.

Baking due process into a smart contract is, although extremely interesting, probably impossible.

karlerss··on AWS is playing chess, Cloudflare is playing Go
The portable thing coming out of this is S3. Your S3 code runs on multiple vendors (and locally, with some hassle) too!
karlerss··on DaisyUI – Tailwind CSS Components
If it's just one class per property, you could just type out the CSS. Using emmet in IDE is probably faster than finding the tailwind classes with autocomplete.
karlerss··on Language records reveal a surge of cognitive distortions in recent decades
Well who is trolling who - if their overgeneralization prompts you to correct them or provide a counterexample, maybe you're already feeding the troll.

Was I trolled into pedantry by your comment?

karlerss··on What the Fastly outage can teach us about writing error messages
If there are other vulnerabilities present, stack traces can be forced to dump all sorts of data like env variables and network information and maybe someone else's personal information.

I strongly urge everyone to hide their stack traces in production. This will reduce your application's attack surface.

karlerss··on What the Fastly outage can teach us about writing error messages
This is considered a critical security vulnerability. [0]

karlerss··on Programming and Writing
I strongly disagree. When building a software product for humans, the first question I ask is "how should it feel?". In the end, this is the only thing that matters. The "feel" summarizes all "technical" aspects too - correctness, reliability etc. While developing a product, I never stop asking.
karlerss··on A house 3D printed from raw earth
There was a deep dive about this in Bloomberg Odd Lots podcast. Although some of the price increase was due to the industry predicting lower demand and getting rid of inventory. Another, more fundamental factor is the actual scarcity of lumber due to lower harvesting quotas set by Canadian govt. These quotas are unlikely to go up any time soon.
karlerss··on Cloudflare Pages is now Generally Available
I set up my blog on CF pages about a month ago. I guess I chose a domain and did the github flow and that was it, everything clicked and worked on the first try. Haven't had to open the UI since.

I have been using CF for a few years now (dns, caching) but the services they've recently launched have been especially impressive (pages, stream).

karlerss··on What I learnt after burning $10M as an entrepreneur
Some companies are willing to sell dollar bills for 75 cents[0]. It's fine if you take on a business risk and it materializes (or pays off), but I wonder if there are companies/founders/executives who maliciously spend investor money with no expectation of positive return for the company.
