jxm262··on Programming Sucks and Why I Quit (2014)
Thank you. That was a much needed pick-me-up. And yeah, you're absolutely correct, but it's sometimes easy to get lost under pressure (speaking for myself).
jxm262··on Programming Sucks and Why I Quit (2014)
> Instead, I need to pick projects that I care about and not spend long stretches of time on things I don’t.

I'm getting this feeling myself more and more lately. And I've only been doing this for a little over 5 years. Although, I wonder if I'll have this thought regardless of what field I am working in.

jxm262··on Peer-to-Peer Insurance
I would love to see some form of this concept implemented here in the US. Does anyone know of any startups trying to work on this? I wonder what some of the larger obstacles are from having this created.
jxm262··on New Horizons: Pluto displays rippling terrain
> It's insane. I can't help but daydream about the insanity of 2130

this this this. I'm constantly amazed at the world and what we're accomplishing. I switched over to Engineering about 5 years ago and feel like I've finally found my happy place in life :)

jxm262··on Announcing Meteor 1.2 – ES2015, Angular, React, and More
yeah, I'm aware of the Meteor testing manual. It has alot of good stuff, and for what I'm doing the link you mentioned mostly resembles my setup (although using mocha instead of jasmine). Just wish the testing was more "officially" documented with good examples and sample repos as opposed to buying a book. If you go on the meteor forums there is _alot_ of discussions on the different frameworks and how to piece things together.
jxm262··on Announcing Meteor 1.2 – ES2015, Angular, React, and More
I've recently been using Meteor on a couple small projects and so far like it quite a bit. My main frustration though is unit testing. While there's the official Velocity test runner, documentation and code examples for integrating and effectively using the frameworks is very confusing (I personally use Mocha). I know there's some books and blogs to help alleviate this, but there doesn't seem to be one (or even just a few) de-facto framework/setups to illustrate how to properly unit test Meteor apps.
jxm262··on Totally Honest Software Engineering Negotiations
I think this was mentioned a few days ago. had a big discussion around it - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10233831
jxm262··on Totally Honest Software Engineering Negotiations
I've noticed that yes there is headroom, but 15%? This seems like alot, but honestly I'm probably undervaluing it myself (something I'm working on).

As I'm just now transitioning from being what I consider "mid" level to "senior" (relative titles I know), I'll try to keep your comment in mind for future jobs. It makes me a bit sad that this game has to be played so much in order to get the full value of your worth.

jxm262··on Saving Agile with BDD and Cucumber
I agree with this. I've recently tried using cucumber for a couple side projects and have decided it's complete overkill for my needs. I see the major benefit would be communication amongst your teams (especially to translate the detailed technical stuff), but if it's a small team who are all devs I'm not finding it very useful.
jxm262··on Fifty
> If you're under 35, my advice would be to think about that. I'm taking this post to heart. Gives me alot to reflect on, thanks for sharing :) I'm lucky to find a field that I love (software), but it's time for me to focus on what I want to do "within" the field
jxm262··on It’s probably a myth that we’re sleeping less than we used to
Me too! Although, I'd love to try taking a couple weeks where I literally sleep until I can't anymore. Take the first couple days, crash for as long as needed (probably a while) until I'm fully rested, then repeat this daily and see how many hours my body "actually" likes to sleep in it's most natural state.

Seems hard to do though when you're working a job, moonlighting projects, life gets in the way, etc..

jxm262··on Buffett FAQ
This is a very good perspective and something that hits home with me. I'm constantly struggling to do "more" beyond my areas of expertise thinking that it's going to be cheaper/make-more-money, etc.. I feel like the advice you just gave applies to many areas, not specific to the stock market or investments.
jxm262··on On doing things other people can't
this is an awesome read, thanks for sharing. I wonder how this can be applied to my career in software development?
jxm262··on How to Onboard Software Engineers
Great discussion. I actually didn't know fog had a large blog section with podcasts/videos. Will be listening to these now :)
jxm262··on Bernie Sanders' 404 page
I would never call myself a political expert, but I do follow pretty closely. I think Bernie Sanders does have a chance, but much less than the media is making it seem. If Hillary's numbers slip too low, I think Biden will probably enter the race and the democratic establishment will attempt to coalesce around him. There's also the possibility that Sanders will run as an Independent which many are saying could fracture the party. Anyway, however it turns out, it will be fun to watch
jxm262··on Financial Misstatements
Agree with you here. Although negligence comes with it's own set of rules which may/may-not apply given what he mentioned in the post. I too found this ironically funny to call it fraud. Further for the sake of argument, not all fraud is criminal, so not all fraud convictions are felonies.
jxm262··on Work Hard, Live Well
I'm based in the US but have friends in France and Spain. They're constantly talking about the cultural differences to how we approach work. I've heard time and time again that many European countries work "smarter" and Americans are way too focused on number of hours.

It's obviously not true in all jobs, but after hearing this so many times, it might be time I try a stint in Europe just for the experience.

jxm262··on Best practices for building large React applications
Oh yeah I get the part about flux being verbose :) Probably should have omitted that part and just asked about what they meant by the Backbone model cache.

Thanks for the link! Wasn't even aware of Relay.

jxm262··on Best practices for building large React applications
> Flux is also quite verbose, which makes it inconvenient for data state, state that is persisted to the server. We currently use a global Backbone model cache for data fetching and saving but we’re also experimenting with a Relay-like system for REST apis. (Stay tuned for more on this topic).

What do they mean by this? I _think_ I've been doing something similar on my projects lately. Using Meteor as my backend pub/sub model, and React.js as my front end. Ties together pretty nicely although there's a range of other issues I'm still trying to work out (1 test frameworks for both React and Meteor code, etc..)

jxm262··on Change Your Name
After reading this, I'm a bit perplexed and sad at the same time. My current strategy was to not use a .com since it was up for sale more than I'm willing to pay. Instead, I decided to go with something similar but different and hopefully change it once the idea/company got traction.

Whether or not I agree with this, PG is a source of authority, which makes me think about my current strategy. Sort of sucks, do I listen to my gut and what many others here are saying, or fork over the money into a domain that could be used for other areas in the business?

I'm going with option#1 btw, just sucks to hear this from someone I respect, because it makes me believe it's true.

jxm262··on Things I would build if I worked at GitHub
A github CI would be awesome! I imagine it would get very costly for them though. I love Travis-CI and the easy integration, but it's too expensive for my non-open source projects.
jxm262··on New React DevTools Beta
> The Side Pane.. > Right-click to store a prop/state value as a global variable

I could see this being pretty useful. Can't wait to try it out :)

jxm262··on Ask HN: What are your best “soft skill” resources?
This book has been mentioned to me at least a dozen times. For some reason, your comment is the one that just pushed me over the edge to buy it :)

I'm posting this just because it's been recommended so often to me there must be something to it.

jxm262··on I am an 18-year-old techie/student. I have leukemia and need your help
Just sent a PR. I actually joined the registry a couple years back on a whim. Thought it would be a good way to help people, although I'll be nervous as hell if actually called up to donate :)
jxm262··on The Craigslist Lawsuit
> and will make its API source code, the settlement agreement, and other legal filings and public policy resources available.

This is interesging to me. A couple years ago being young and naive i received a cease and desist order from craigslist legal team demanding i remove my craigslist scraper from github. It was largely a toy project to play around with an html parser library i wanted to learn anx thought it could be useful. Of course I now understand it was against their tos and from an ethical standpoint, avoid scraping anything unless getting permission, but at the time I was terrified I'd be sued for a ton of money. It felt incredibly aggressive to go after me , a student at the time.

So I'm curious.. is it illegal to scrape but ok to release the source code? Where is the line drawn?

jxm262··on In Iraq, I raided insurgents. In Virginia, the police raided me
This is a really well written article. This also echo's alot of the sentiment that many people have. I remember reading recently about the differences in police training from Germany vs the US. One of the things that stuck out at me was the huge amount of hours they spend training to "not" shoot, and learning how to de-escalate situations. It's no wonder we have so many issues here in the US, it makes me sad.
jxm262··on YC Fellowship
^ "The app is currently unreachable." I'd like access too!
jxm262··on Never, ever, ever use MongoDB
there's a card on trello asking this for a future enhancement (I haven't followed the discussions for a while though). https://trello.com/c/Gf6YxFp2/42-sql-support

However, I believe there's a few existing options for using postgres - https://github.com/numtel/meteor-pg

jxm262··on The information that companies share with employees is becoming a bigger issue
I would like this , but one additional question is "when" should you ask? As in, what part of the interviewing process does one ask about outstanding shares, etc..

Should it be after an offer is extended, immediately after the technical part of the interview, etc..?

I would feel awkward asking some of these specifics about financing early in the process.

jxm262··on Ask HN: What tech blogs, podcasts do you follow outside of HN?
Oh wow really cool! Been getting more into bitcoin this year, this will help give me a bit of insight and stay current with the latest discussions.

Thanks!
