junaru··on How Nissan and Honda's $60B merger talks collapsed
Noone is excited about hondas, its all about Chinese bikes - cfmotos, koves, etc.
junaru··on Dead Games
> I'm just putting this out there, nobody works harder in gaming than Facepunch. Thank you Garry!

Indeed, thanks for removing the native Linux client and thanks for not enabling EAC support for Proton! /s

junaru··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
Why is this being framed as airliners fault to begin with.

When a fishingboat gets rammed by an cruise ship it's not "cruise ship collides with fishingboat", its the reverse.

One is a big civilian aircraft thats being tracked and has no way of making sharp course adjustments the other is a 'VIP' with potentially ADS-B off.

Heads should fly at whatever military branch the hellicopter was operated at... but they wont.

junaru··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
> More powerful console, DVD instead of CD, and that was it

Wrong. PS2 had pressure sensitive buttons, hard drives/linux, network multiplayer, camera, etc..

junaru··on Canon wants us to pay for using our own camera as a webcam
You do, capture cards introduce latency something around 30-50ms (at least the cheaper ones) and if you are using non built in mic you need to resync everything up.
junaru··on VW Group Collects Vehicle Movement Data
Can someone point me in the right direction on how cars submit the telemetry in the first place?

Clearly some cellular technology is in use but this would require an eSIM or something from your local carrier. Do modern cars have "free internet" baked into them somehow that lets them upload this data? Whats the technology/protocol called ? How does it work in foreign countries with different carriers.

junaru··on More than 300 game developers lost their jobs in one day, weeks before Christmas
> What do you think they care about then, if they're not trying (but in some cases failing) to make money?

They care about attracting investment fund money and not building a good product and growing their consumer base. There's no conspiracy, ticking woke checkboxes gives you extra points in any consideration, that's a fact in current political climate.

Biggest investment funds are those managing retirement funds so even a single fund like that is 'voting with wallets' of hundreds of thousands(if not millions) of its clients that wouldn't support the game company to begin with.

If you want to see something grassroots check Grinding Gear Games and their developer interviews for the sequel game (POE2) that will be releasing tomorrow. You will see them engaging in discussion with community for hours, talking about their server infrastructure and how it can fail, releasing numbers of their stress tests and how many players they expect based on preorders (~1 milion).

Than again this only happens when your PR person is actually the technical lead that knows the product inside out and not someone interested in quick buck. Guess how many of that team will be fired this christmas...

Edit: 10 minutes about their infrastructure:

> No one uses 1080p displays anymore.

I live in a bubble, the post.

junaru··on What I wish someone told me about Postgres
Schema != data.
junaru··on Chi-Fi Tuning – Why It Sounds So Damn Piercing to Western Ears (2020)
Hissing most likely comes from media, unequal discharge rate is legit problem. I'm not an apple fan but when it comes to reliability major brands at least do some product design and quality checks, meanwhile most chi-fi IEMs have options for MMCX connectors that are entirely unsuitable for the use case and should have been shot down during the design phase, but hey - "the more options the better".

P.S. For anyone thinking i bash just because of China or western audiophile superiority - no i just got burned by articles like this and crinnancle reviews twice and sharing my experience.

junaru··on Chi-Fi Tuning – Why It Sounds So Damn Piercing to Western Ears (2020)
Got a pair of TIN HiFi T2 - failed within a year.

Got a pair of Moondrop SSR - failed within a year.

Got a pair of Apple earpods - works for two years without issues for a fraction of the price.

I'm done with the Chinese IEM meme.

junaru··on I've had a change of heart regarding employee metrics
> no matter how much lower-level managers complained, the team could still anonymously say when they actually believe the project will be finished. Etc.

This would result in lower tier managers announcing beforehand they claimed "x time for y project" and if the devs want their sickdays/bonuses/promotions they should claim same.

junaru··on Boeing CEO says the company must fundamentally change
Wont it just get bought out by the gov/taxpayer because it's a strategic asset etc. ?
junaru··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
It even came with handwriting built in as authentication mechanism! AI detectors hate this secret!

On a more serious note - US removed cursive from their curriculum almost two decades ago - something i cant wrap my head around as cursive is something the rest of the world(?) uses starting in middle school and onwards through the whole adult life.

junaru··on Google Play killed my game and won't tell me why
Mobile shovelware devs hate it because it's a stark reminder that no adult finds value in their product.
junaru··on What Is LibreDrive (2019)
Correct me if i'm wrong but its not even exploiting some firmware bug or anything.

Think there is a 'plugin interface' in those firmware that exposes whatever is needed to read the raw data so all it does is uses that interface to dump data instead of using the official calls. IIRC its why the read speeds are slower.

junaru··on UK workers must keep all customer tips under new law
Tips should not exist.
junaru··on Ford seeks patent for tech that listens to driver conversations to serve ads
There is no future for dumb cars. They will be outlawed just like ICE ones in the coming decades.

You will not even be able to manually drive as you will be deemed too much of a hazard for all the autonomous cars.

junaru··on The U.S. Navy's $100M checkbox (2019)
> Two years ago a Navy destroyer was ripped open by the nose of a Liberian tanker. Ten sailors were crushed or drowned as their sleeping quarters filled with water after the collision. At the heart of the tragedy is a single checkbox on a touchscreen.

No, this is crew incompetence, the checkbox is just covering the fact the crew has no idea how the vehicle works or how to operate it.

> The crew believed they had lost control of the ship because they were relying on the main steering controls, the rudder, without realizing that the ship was turning because of the secondary steering method, propellors set at different speeds

Let that sink in (no pun intended) - the crew is not aware the propellors can spin at different speeds... for three minutes... with what appears to be two giant sliders on the screen.

junaru··on Japan chain uses AI to gauge staff smiles, speech tones in QoS push
> On July 1, the national brand announced it had become the world’s first company to promote a smile-gauging AI system,

The fact they are boasting about it publicly is sickening. This is quite frankly human abuse and they are proud of it.

junaru··on Shapeways Files for Bankruptcy
> but we’d be surprised if the rise of similar services in China

Can someone list those? As someone who has no space for 3D printer this would be interesting to check out.

junaru··on SUSE Offers Lifeline to Stranded CentOS Users with Liberty Linux Lite
Whats so special about Centos 7? Just migrate to Almalinux and elevate up to 9 [1]. The only big difference that comes to mind is openssl3.

junaru··on Proposed ballot measure to raise corporate taxes, give every Oregonian $750/year
The only way to help people struggling with income is to lower their income taxes.

That forces them to still be productive members of society instead of supporting populist handouts that are not sustainable once the ball gets rolling and corporations move out.

junaru··on OpenRecall
Back in the day we called it spyware but now its a 'productivity tool'. It's horrifying how this became the norm.
junaru··on VW to Build €20k EVs on Its Own, Forgoing Partnerships
The only way its gonna be 20k and built in EU is if it's golfcart tier and has ton of subscriptions that suck another 20k in couple of years.
junaru··on Huawei Releases Ultra 9 MateBook X Pro with 40W TDP in 980g
There is literary a guideline specifically about the top comment:

> Eschew flamebait. Avoid generic tangents. Omit internet tropes.

Or how about:

> Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle. That tramples curiosity.

junaru··on The Angry Video Game Model: neural network arch to predict videogame ratings
Every developer/publisher has a "neural network" (pun intended) of their own that knows exactly how the game will be rated, however it is always ignored when it comes to greed and probing how much you can milk the client.

A model for this is just a scapegoat.

junaru··on Group buys up large tracts of land in Romania to create 'European Yellowstone'
Call me pessimist but (emphasis mine):

> We can only buy from private property, but not from municipalities or landowners’ associations, so our strategy is to acquire what we can and donate it to the state *only if it creates a national park*

So foreign "donors" are buying land that they gonna keep if local government doesn't do what they want.
