junaru··on Analysis: EVs are now nine times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in UK
EVs are rich people offloading tax burden to less fortunate ones.

Previously (last year) various taxes made almost half the fuel price. We don't have green/car taxes where i live, everyone charges their cars at home and brag how 'cheap it is'. Additionally you can drive in bus lanes if you drive EV (capital only) and you have the perfect nepotism scheme - no taxes, premium transit for anyone already rich enough. No politician dares to bring this up as solution would lead to the introduction of general car tax (political suicide) so once again everyone else is left to pick up the bill after the rich.

junaru··on I don't like passkeys
They exist for sole purpose companies can just shoot the "we have been hacked, but worry not your 'passwords' have not been leaked" email.

It's entirely one sided solution.

junaru··on Shutting down our public encrypted DNS
Their DoH going down for hours multiple times is what forced me back to cloudflare, i don't trust cloudflare more but at least it works consistently.

Additionally the default of blocking 'malware' doesn't jive with uncensored internet - that should be an opt in and not a default on their flagship address if they want to be taken seriously as unfiltered provider.

If the encrypted endpoint can go down for extended periods and they curate list of 'malware' they are not something that should be considered a gateway to uncensored and open internet.

junaru··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
> That limit is only for a certain Yubikey model, not for all hardware-based fido2 authenticators.

Do you know who offers more? I deliberately chose Yubikey as example as their limit was the highest. Others like Nitrokey etc. support even less.

junaru··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
> hardware based

Sounds good until you realise theres no way to transfer/back them up and you are limited to 100 [1] (previously 25?).

Personally my password manager has almost 4x the entries so hardware passkey solutions are a joke leaving users with single option - upload their keychains to ms/apple/etc clouds where they can be requested by any gov under the sun for x reasons.

junaru··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
Passkeys were invented so hacked sites could brush off their leaks with "no credentials were leaked" and minimise any regulatory fines. This is the reason why its being pushed by the big players.

Additionally this puts the same players in control of your logins - want to sync your passkeys? - enable "iCloud Keychain", or some other 'trust me bro' app that will 'securely store/sync your data' - no thank you.

In perfect world users should be able to generate a certificate, upload it to a couple nfc capable ubikey like devices that blow a fuse afterwards preventing from additional writes/reads and use that to login to every app ever. You would buy such devices in packs of 3, upload same cert to all, hide the other, burry the third.

junaru··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
What does one buy if they want a 1080p60 action cam with stabilisation that doesn't overheat, has good battery life and acceptable low light performance (think rainy day in the woods)?

Yeah people will hear about this and subscribe to chatgpt pro in spite.

You have to be special to think this is comparable to paint throwing on works of art or blocking public roads. Everyone outside tech hates AI.

You are unironically using 'vacation destinations' as argument for modifying your legal system to fit foreign lobbying needs. All is lost.

junaru··on Bohemia Interactive: Cold War Assault Remastered Source Code on GitHub
This is what stop killing games seek turned up to 11.

From Steam demo description:

junaru··on European sentiments towards the US hit an all-time low
Fair. I stand corrected. First casualty of war is always the truth so both sides will lie.
junaru··on European sentiments towards the US hit an all-time low
> Look at Ukraine, how weak they were and how good they defended themselves.

How can you type such nonsense? Look at 2014 Crimean annexation - thats "how good they defended themselves" without western training and billions in weapon aid. After four years they have million plus dead but "this is fine" for the west.

junaru··on The gamers taking on the industry to stop it switching off games
That game is called World Of Warcraft.

It had its server reimplemented by enthusiasts [1] with no access to this "one of a kind cloud" for decades now. Heck it even supposedly had game client ported to new engine [2].

> B-but we can't release the binaries due to licensing...

Release the source. As a developer you should be able to write code that allows to stub out all the propriety parts. The community will replace your speedtrees, matchmaking, netcode, anticheats and so on.

Change is hard we get it, but the excuses are on par with any other industry..

junaru··on The gamers taking on the industry to stop it switching off games
You can't make a person see a problem if his livelihood depends on not seeing it.

In my gaming circles, people who work on SaaS solutions are against SKG even though they are avid gamers and even open source contributors. They just recoil on a thought of an EOL plan. Same on HN.

"Think of the indies" is just same old "Think of the children" astroturfing.

junaru··on Vladimir Putin is losing his grip on Russia
As a westerner i'm constantly bombarded with

There are entire youtube channels dedicated to these circlejerks and they are forced into my recommendations all while we loose freedoms to 'fight foreign propoganda'.

junaru··on Valve releases Steam Controller CAD files under Creative Commons license
Id bet some money it has more to do with certification. Consoles ban 3rd party controllers that provide a competitive edge. Steam controller is exactly that.
junaru··on Russia Poisons Wikipedia
It's not genuine and very opaquely biased. The same can be asked about any country depending on whos opinion you accepted as your truth.

Theres always their side, your side and the truth.

There's a push for extremes on both sides and both refuse to acknowledge it.

It's as if the conflict is good for something...

junaru··on Why does it take so long to release black fan versions?
They are enthusiast targeted brand and majority of enthusiast (heck even entry level cases) have windows in it.

Enthusiasts care about the details - airflow, cable management and of course aesthetics. Noctua doesn't. I respect their engineering/no bullshit approach, the price bump is worth it but they lost my money on multiple builds by sticking to their 'brand color'.

They're the Soylent of the fan world - everything you need but spark zero joy.

I'd be interested in seeing sales figures for same fans in their brand and other colors.

junaru··on How to Implement an FPS Counter
> FPS based on last frame is good to see load spikes, particular periodic ones, if you graph them.

This.

The other two are not good for anything gaming as any framerate inconsistency breaks the experience. A stable frame rate is much more important than a high one.

junaru··on Monero Community Crowdfunding System
Who decided you can post this? Was 'everyone' consulted on what they'd rather you post? Because it seems like you and a handful of politicians posted ideas you wanted and everyone else can suck it...

I hope you see the absurdity of your 'everyone' claim.

junaru··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
VR/AR is a gimmick. Gimmicks have no place on a work tool (macOS). No one is gonna use VR/AR with a laptop. Liquid Glass is Apples Metro UI.

I'm still on 18.x thats insecure by now and switching to Asahi as soon as something breaks.

junaru··on Women are getting most of the new jobs. What's going on with men?
Out of that list only sexual advances apply to men. So no its not the same. Having worked in mostly female workplace i can confirm the pissing matches there are on a whole new level.
