jp_nc··on MacBook Neo
Having used both... it's 100% true
jp_nc··on MacBook Neo
If they would offer a reasonable replacement program, I bet they could make a strong case to EDU. The nice thing about Chromebooks is when a kid spills something on it, it's cheap to replace and to get back up and running. A tight EDU iCloud restore and reasonable replacement cost could definitely make this an attractive option for some school districts as this will last for a kid's entire school career.

FWIW, my son has a 2020 M1 Air with 8gb and it runs just fine still. 8gb in the Mac world is much different than 8gb in the Windows world. Also, I am guessing most of the Chromebooks currently used in schools are running 4gb. If you need more ram, go up to an Air... reality is this will work fine for most kids and casual browsing scenarios.
jp_nc··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
And also, the speed at which you can build solutions has significantly been reduced because of AI. I wonder if this plays a role in their decision.
jp_nc··on Tech CEOs attend Amazon-funded "Melania" screening at White House
End Amazon overnight and see what the response is from the people. What I don’t get about these guys is that they have their OWN power base - their customers. Just look at the leverage TikTok had because of their users
jp_nc··on Alphabet tops $100B quarterly revenue for first time, cloud grows 34%
If they actually incentivized a group to support stability and continuity among enterprise customers, they would probably be able to diversify their revenue away from ads. Microsoft understands this…
jp_nc··on GPT-5
I don’t know… Travis Kalanick said he’s doing “vibe physics” sessions with MechaHitler approaching the boundaries of quantum physics.

"I'll go down this thread with GPT or Grok and I'll start to get to the edge of what's known in quantum physics and then I'm doing the equivalent of vibe coding, except it's vibe physics"

jp_nc··on RFK Jr.: HHS moves to restore public trust in vaccines
Also, the decadence of the American people is contributing a lot. Tough to find time to care when the average person is spending 2-4 hours staring at 10-30 second bursts of entertainment. It’s depressing…
jp_nc··on Tariffs result in 10% laptop price hike in U.S. says Acer CEO
The top 10% income bracket is a household income of 234k. For a couple both making $150k each in salary, they are top 10% and paying out probably 40% of that in taxes. Elons stock probably added $200B to his net worth in the past year. He did not pay anything on it, however is able to use it as collateral to borrow against (that way he doesn’t even have to pay capital gains). The upper middle class pays most of the tax burden. And your point about services???? Elon may not take advantage of the head start program for his kids, but he sure benefited from government subsidies for electric cars (just like CEOs benefit from favorable legislation and regulation)
jp_nc··on Teen on Musk's DOGE team graduated from 'The Com'
Trump hates wars started by other people as they are means to enhance his populist support. His recent comments on Canada, Greenland, Panama and Gaza show his true colors. He is more than willing to use the military - though a lot of it was blocked in his first admin by guys like Mattis, Pompeo, Kelly, Bolton. The crew around him now only exists to carry out his insane conquests.
jp_nc··on Trump Tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China
This is why so many of us spent so much time trying to convince our friends and family that Trump 2.0 is dangerous and will shatter the current world order. I am sorry to all of our allies who are going to be hurt by this.
jp_nc··on TikTok goes dark in the US
You are trusting your “freedom of speech” to an entity controlled by a government which blocks US companies from penetrating the great firewall? Try googling tank man in China…you can’t because google is blocked and tank man is prohibited content.
jp_nc··on "Policy changes at Meta are deeply troubling" – Mastodon CEO
Yet, here you are, happily posting on a platform that totally restricts what topics you are able to talk about.
jp_nc··on Waymo achieves 92% reduction in bodily injury claims compared to human drivers

jp_nc··on South Korean president declares martial law, parliament votes to lift it
The recent SCOTUS decision in the US will make this endlessly complicated. If the illegal order is deemed an official act, SCOTUS has said POTUS has liability. So does the military carry out an illegal act (which can’t be illegal), or refuse and face charges of insubordination?
jp_nc··on We’re receiving about 3,000 reports/hour
I do not have a right to put signs promoting my beliefs in your front yard. Preventing me from doing that is not a prohibition of free speech. What’s going to slay me is that the group that bitched and moaned about twitter preventing free speech have turned it into a hellhole nobody wants to be in. Now they will come over and say the same about Blue Sky??? Guys - you can post your ridiculous nonsense on X… nobody is infringing on your right to free speech.
jp_nc··on How do you put on an Apollo spacesuit? (2015)
I highly recommend this documentary about the spacesuit…

The whole moon machines series is fantastic.

jp_nc··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
Thats because of the calculation:

- Endorse Harris and Trump wins, Trump will seek revenge on Bezos and Amazon (he tried this in the first term)

- Endorse Trump and Harris wins, Harris will not act outside the bounds of a normal government official

This is capitulation to the perceived threats of a Trump presidency and is very bad.

jp_nc··on Norway to increase minimum age limit on social media to 15 to protect children
The current US political climate would indicate adults are no better equipped to handle the dopamine from social media.
jp_nc··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
I dumped my kids weekly middle school update into it and it produced a nice summary that I could listen to while doing something else.
jp_nc··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
I think it’s the disappointment that Apple is supposed to be on the side of creators and humanity in an era where the arts have been under attack in schools. Apple makes great tools that should complement an artist and their work. It enables a kid who can’t afford an expensive studio to produce their own music. It’s not that it was an outrage machine - it was a population of creatives saying “hey, this feels a little weird”
jp_nc··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
If he thinks GPT-4 is AGI, Elon should ask a team of GPT-4 bots to design, build and launch his rockets and see how it goes. If “economically valuable work” means creating terrible, wordy blog posts then yeah I guess it’s a risk.
jp_nc··on Expensive fridges are dying, leading to fraud claims
If it’s acting weird, just shut it off and kill the water to it. Ours was doing the same thing and one day we came down to probably 10 gallons of water on our wood floor and the ice maker just spewing water. We bought a GE Opal instead and it’s great.
jp_nc··on Microsoft is planning an 'Advanced Windows Settings' panel for power users
No worries - that’s what Copilot is for! Click now to subscribe
jp_nc··on Microsoft faces antitrust scrutiny from the EU over Teams, Office 365
Slack dropped the ball earlier than that on audio/video. They acquired Screenhero in 2015 and did nothing of substance with it. Also, the lack of any real meeting features means that Zoom or Teams always has to be in the picture.
jp_nc··on First Republic, other regional bank stocks sink after failure of SVB

jp_nc··on Ohio train derailment: environmental disaster quietly unfolding
“Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio issued an urgent evacuation notice on Sunday night to more than 500 people who had previously declined to leave their homes and were within a one-mile radius of the derailment site.”
jp_nc··on Show HN: AI Cover Letter Writer
Not to mention the same game has been played from the HR side. Imagine taking the time to write a beautifully written cover letter only to be filtered by some resume keyword matching software. At this point if you are sending cold resumes it’s completely a numbers game where quantity > quality.
jp_nc··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
The “Epic thread” post could easily be used as Russian propaganda as an endorsement. I tend to think someone with as much power as Elon has some duty to be serious when engaging in potentially dangerous geopolitical issues.
jp_nc··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
Have had good luck with ZeroWater which comes with a TDS meter on the pitcher. Unlike Brita indicators which are time-based, this allows you to just measure the solids have actually been removed (if it's too high, it's time to replace it)
