I like the 'only app store' part as if that's a bad thing
jorkos··on Pre-branded domain names for startups
This is an okay option but there are other ways to get good cheap domains. The main problem with these domains is that they have no history.
jorkos··on Experiment: Re-naming 31 Startups with the Domain Refinery
If you are serious about your startup and can spend a bit of money to get a good name, spend the $1000....relying on services that only offer names that aren't registered is a mistake in my opinion.
jorkos··on Inside the Harvard Business School Case Method
Marc andreesen attacks this method for good reason - the case methodology suggests you'll have a lot more data in the real world than you do and trains people to look for clues in the past about what you should do now; you simply can't always do that.
jorkos··on Making u-Deals work for everyone
- I'm running a deal on loopt technology; save 40 percent if we all buy a piece. Don't worry, they condone this deal implicitly.
jorkos··on Ask HN: Are freelancer sites (e.g. Odesk, Elance) useless?
In short, yes I have found good designers. One of the keys is to give 4 or 5 of the best applicants a small test project before moving forward
jorkos··on Pixar's Library
- visiting pixar with my roommate who worked there at the time was a great experience; the environment they've created for their team is the best i've seen anywhere
jorkos··on Show HN: My first iPad app: Palimpsest for iPad (codes inside)

I'm starting to learn as well, thanks for the links guys
jorkos··on Subject: Airbnb
This is a great point....market potential seems to be top of mind more than anything else.....which reminds me of how Sequoia invests....clearly they got the larger vision (and presumably had more data points as they invested later)
jorkos··on Ask HN: How does this happen? Pandora Radio founder owns less than 3%
The short story, the company struggled for a long time early on, hence the need to dilute to not close the doors
jorkos··on Ask HN: Review bettingly.com
In terms of the design, it's fairly flat right now....try to highlight the one or two things you want peoples' eyes to go to first.
jorkos··on "Why I'm Dropping Posterous This Weekend"
Anyone have thoughts on Tumblr versus Posterous? Any recommendations?
jorkos··on Brief Thoughts on Angel List
Dave nails the often unspoken truth: traditional VC's have been terrible on average. Suspect the savvy LPs will pour more and more into 500hat-esque vehicles...
jorkos··on Show HN: I'll help you name your next startup/product for $50
point me to a few happy customers and i'd be happy to try it
jorkos··on The 80/20 Rule of Technical Founders
This makes no sense, arbitrarily applying the 80/20 rule to any and all circumstances holds no grounds - really. The 80/20 fallacy is one of the most overused and misunderstood concepts in stats...."applying the 80/20 we won't worry about this aspect of our customer base....or this aspect of our business...". It's pernicious, it really is.
jorkos··on How Bvckup got its name
This post seems to miss three important considerations: trademarks, domains & "spellability". With respect to trademarks, it's worth taking a few minutes on uspto.gov to understand the trademark landscape of your potential name. Secondly, with respect to domains, it's worth assessing how much your desired name will cost you. It is very rare to find a half-way decent name that has not been registered, but many are either not being used or in the hands of squatters. For a few thousand you can get a decent name. When your desired name is in the hands of squatters, and you don't have the cash, I suggest using something like "getDESIREDNAME" or "DESIREDNAMEapp".....if the service succeeds you will have the cash to purchase the domain. Again, you want to ensure going in that your desired name is not already being used in the same manner that you intend to use it. On the final point, if someone can't spell your name after hearing it, it's a fail. Flickr is not the exception that disproves this rule.

Looking at Bvckup then w/ these considerations in mind, yes the trademark is available and so was the domain, but on the third count it fails. My 2 cents.

jorkos··on Selling pickaxes during a gold rush
To your point, i think the analogy holds when thinking about specific verticals. In fitness for example, sell bowflex or PBX90 where the gold is great fitness.

The analogy breaks down however when you see that in the B2C internet space, the issue is that you have to create the gold through your service; it's not known what everyone wants, you have to create it.....and thus the opportunity.

jorkos··on In 1994 Bryant Gumbel asked: 'What is Internet, anyway?' [video]
Of course he asked this as did most others his age at this time; don't really see the controversy here.
