Big supporter of renewables, but what's missing here is the make up of what's getting imported. The overnight baseline appears to still be majority imports from, I assume, non-renewables?

johlindenbaum··on The Absurdity of Income Tax
Canada has a quarterly “VAT” rebate (technically GST and PST, or HST depending on your province) scheme for lower incomes.

Make below X based on last year’s tax return? Here’s a quarterly cheque to offset the average individual’s sales tax.

johlindenbaum··on Driving Amazon’s electric delivery vehicle: Rivian EDV [video]
In Canada we have something like this.. Flex Delivery. Let's you just enter the address of the nearest postal outlet to you. Boxes are left at that depot, you get a notification when it's ready for pickup.

Edit: since our gov't postal service is teamed up with a pharmacy/general store (Shoppers Drugmart), there's a tonne of convenient locations. Closest one to me is 4 blocks, on my drive home from work.

johlindenbaum··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
We solved this by issuing company owned and controlled laptops to our contractors.

Disk encryption, screen time outs, remote wipe etc. contractor machines with code and production access are treated as critical assets and are fully under IT control.

johlindenbaum··on Strong Towns Has Filed a Lawsuit Against the Minnesota Board of Engineering
For good reason. When I get a plan stamped by an Engineer I want to make sure they're certified to make sure my thing doesn't fall over / collapse.

I am a Software Developer - I did not graduate from an Engineering college. I am not an Engineer. The stuff I do does not kill people when it fails.

99% of people that claim to be Engineers (at least in Software) are not.

7shifts | Fullstack Developers, Eng. Managers, Developer In Test | Toronto, ON & Saskatoon, SK | Full-time

We're looking to expand our Engineering and Product operations in Toronto and our Saskatoon HQ. We offer competitive salaries for both markets, and relocation packages (including visa/immigration support). Reach me directly if you have questions johannes at 7shifts com.

johlindenbaum··on Why you should not use Google Cloud
Totally agree. There’s so many missing redundancies on this project. CTO / Dir. Eng should have their own card. They should have some contact with a Google account rep, and at least the basic support package.

We’re not a big Google customer, couple thousand a month, but when we migrated we instantly reached out to account reps and have regular quarterly check ins.

I’m curious about this but there’s no information on this form about who you are, who your team is, a link for more information.

Ironic as a key pillar of GDPR is telling the user clearly what your intent is with entered data.

johlindenbaum··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2017)
7shifts | Software Developers | Full-time | Onsite in Toronto & Saskatoon, Canada

We're a restaurant scheduling platform working on scheduling, performance, and communication for restaurants.

We just closed a $4.5m CAD funding round that we're using to fuel our growth and tech expansion into integration work with our Point of Sale partners. We're doing some interesting stuff with behaviour and receipt data to help restaurants optimize their operations, and most importantly retain their staff.

Validated business model, multi-mm ARR, 20 engineering staff, 45 total in the company.

Stack: nginx, php7/fpm, mysql, rabbitMQ, React front-end.

Career details: https://www.7shifts.com/careers

johlindenbaum··on Ask HN: Do you regret taking investment?
Prairie funding is changing pretty quickly, at least here in SK. We don't really focus on getting SK-money, but we've had great funding and interest from Toronto, Chicago and some Valley funding. Locality didn't matter to any of our investors as much as what the plan and growth strategies are.
johlindenbaum··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2017)
Hiring pretty much across the board!

We're 7shifts, a Canada based, California venture backed company focusing on solving interesting problems in the restaurant space. We focus on scheduling, communication and evaluation of a restaurant's operation.

Tech stack for our web/API is PHP7, MySQL, nginx. Native mobile apps (swift, java).

Saskatoon, SK & Toronto, ON Canada. Onsite. Potential remote positions.

johlindenbaum··on Launch HN: Penny (YC W17) – a personal finance coach
You'll probably find that Canada is in there for free. If you guys use the same Intuit link that Level uses, you'll probably find "Royal Bank of Canada" and "Royal Bank of Canada (US)" in the list of supported institutions. Level worked great in Canada if you went through the effort of downloading it from the US AppStore.

You should try VoiceOver and the gestures that come with it, it's mind blowing how well it works. I've found plenty of usability improvements that are really easy to make so that VoiceOver works flawlessly in apps I've worked on.

johlindenbaum··on UW fusion reactor concept could be cheaper than coal
Greenpeace is very outspoken against fusion, as they believe it carries the same dangers as fission. http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/press/releases/IT...
johlindenbaum··on UW fusion reactor concept could be cheaper than coal
I think "a few years" is optimistic. I would assume a lot of the community is holding its breath to see how ITER fares once it's switched on in 8-12 years. Nobody knows for certain if it's possible to generate a plasma on earth that can heat itself, and then produce excess energy. And by that time the anti-fusion lobby will have poisoned the mind of the average power user to believe that fusion = fission.
johlindenbaum··on Plastc Card
With chip & pin (and the October 2015 deadline for the US to switch to chip & pin) this is awesome, and might actually make it up to Canada, where we've moved onto NFC and chip & pin.

I have a sneaky feeling that Coin's long radio silence and pushed ship dates are them re-engineering to have chip & pin at launch.

johlindenbaum··on A Star in a Bottle – The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor
I'm going to assume the cost is the novel research behind this. Trying to create fusion in the first place has been researched for decades. If this works, and they can do it at scale, a new reactor wouldn't have the same cost as all the previous research attached to it.
johlindenbaum··on Uber ordered to halt transportation services in Germany
I liked UberX while I was in the city. Awesome ridesharing. Great.

I don't understand why Uber, in a regulated taxi eco system like London or Berlin, wouldn't just start with UberTAXI? Why not start the process gently by being able to hail a cab and pay through the app. This is the most problematic issue for me as a user. Getting a dedicated cab to show up to my location, just for me.

While living in the Bay Area, I talked to several (yellow) cab drivers that love Uber because it guarantees a fair that their dispatch service can't.

Why does Uber not enter new markets by making booking Taxis easier first, then introduce X at a later point when their brand is better known in a new market?
