jmisavage··on Tesla Is Not the Next Ford. It's the Next Con Ed
Small correction Ford sold 4.4M vehicles worldwide in 2023. The 2M number is just for the United States. But Toyota absolutely crushes the competition with 11.2M sold last year.
jmisavage··on Rivian Is Turning into the Subaru of EVs
I was going to say it looks like a ‘91 VW Golf Country.

jmisavage··on We Choose Profit at 37signals
They’re such a unique company, but they’ve always fail to recognize just how unique their situation is and how most people can only dream of being so lucky.

- First you have DHH who is one of the creators of Ruby on Rails. He has a large cult-like following

- You have relatively simple projects that are profitable from day 1

- They have a series of “self-help” style books for running a business that are popular. Rework was their most popular by far.

- And when you do take on money you get an extremely unique business arrangement. Bezos invested in them early on and only became a member in a LLC. All the VCs I know make you reform as a Corp.

The only other places even remotely close to that might be Vercel and Netlify. And I only say that because of their widely popular open source projects.

jmisavage··on A Leaked Memo from Google CEO Sundar Pichai Comes Amidst Employee Discontent
You forgot Android.
jmisavage··on HP's CEO spells it out: You're a 'bad investment' if you don't buy HP supplies
Newer Brothers printers are starting to do the same tricks.

jmisavage··on Tesla Cybertruck owners who drove 10k miles say range is 164 to 206 miles
This was reported on a few months ago.

This was a quote from an unnamed employee in the article “...when the battery fell below 50% of its maximum charge, the algorithm would show drivers more realistic projections for their remaining driving range...”

jmisavage··on Apple Must Stop Selling Watches with Blood Oxygen Feature
15 of the 17 patents that they claim Apple violated have been invalidated. Apple is still appealing the other 2 so they could be legit or go away as well. If those remaining 2 hold up then Apple should pay, if not then Masimo is abusing the patent system.
jmisavage··on Netflix never used its $1M algorithm (2012)
Nope. You’re thinking of Warner Brothers Discovery and Paramount.
jmisavage··on Fixing annoying blue standby lights
The giant blue LED on the LaCie Little Big Disk is the most annoying thing ever. It flickers on hard drive activity.
jmisavage··on Ask HN: What are ethical companies like Patagonia and some digital counterparts?
Nowhere near the scale of Patagonia, but ZenBusiness operates as a PBC.

jmisavage··on Ferret: A Multimodal Large Language Model
FYI Apple bought the company that made the kinect sensors. The Face ID module on iPhones is a mini kinect.
jmisavage··on Apple loses one of the last remaining designers from Jony Ive era
I went from a XS with a case to a 15 Pro. It’s like no one at Apple has ever played a game in landscape mode. The camera bump is awful and uncomfortable. I haven’t found a case that makes it usable.
jmisavage··on Dependencies Belong in Version Control
I agree in principle, but you also need the same machine too otherwise new OS and hardware might introduce issues too. I resurrected an old project that needed to convert LESS to CSS and the node version required couldn’t run on my machine. Upgrading it to a version that could introduced filesystem changes that broke the packages that it was looking for.

Now just imagine businesses in the middle of a platform shift like Macs going from Intel to Apple’s own ARM chips. Eventually you’ll going to be missing something and all this work of bundling everything will end up being busy work.

jmisavage··on Kepler, Nvidia's Strong Start on 28 nm
They have the Azure Maia 100 (AI accelerator) and Azure Cobalt 100 (128 core ARM Neoverse derived cpu).

jmisavage··on Cooperative C++ Evolution – Toward a TypeScript for C++
Yeah Microsoft didn’t want AtScript to steal the little thunder TypeScript had at the time, but we’re still left with that one experimental feature all over Angular codebases.
jmisavage··on Cooperative C++ Evolution – Toward a TypeScript for C++
The only problem is you run the risk of implementing a still developing standard that might be vastly different than the finalize version. You then have code and programmers trained in doing something the old "wrong" way.

This happened in TypeScript when they added support for an early version of decorators and now the TC39 version (which is still only Stage 3) is just different enough to cause issues.

jmisavage··on Cooperative C++ Evolution – Toward a TypeScript for C++
I'm confused doesn't C# fill this role?
jmisavage··on Mint is shutting down, and it's pushing users toward Credit Karma
I still have a copy that I run in a VM. Doesn’t do as much as before, but I’m surprised how bad most of its replacements are at the basic feature level.
jmisavage··on Killing Windows 10 in 2025 could turn PCs into eWaste
You can install Asahi Linux on any of the M1/2 Macs. And even if Microsoft and Apple stop giving updates you can still run the machine with the last OS. I’ve been running a 2012 Mac mini just fine and it hasn’t seen updates in a while.
jmisavage··on Firefox accounts renamed Mozilla accounts
The URL is still accounts.firefox.com and email still comes from account@firefox.com. It looks like a really half done rebranding exercise.
jmisavage··on Can an Artificial Kidney Finally Free Patients from Dialysis?
Even doing everything right doesn’t mean you won’t have this happen to you.

I’m an avid cyclist that does hundreds of miles per week, I have type 2 diabetes with an A1c score better than most normal adults, I’m not overweight, have normal blood pressure and with all of that I’m still in stage 3 renal failure.

jmisavage··on Show HN: A JavaScript function that looks and behaves like a pipe operator
There is a proposal to add the pipeline operator |> to the standard that works similar to what you have here.

jmisavage··on Svelte 5 is going to be radical
Next.js 13 is using them.
jmisavage··on Show HN: Markwhen: Markdown for Timelines
Interesting project. Mermaid has an experimental syntax for timelines too. You might want to look at it for ideas.

jmisavage··on Intel is all-in on backside power delivery
Backside power delivery should help portables and maybe get some of these crazy desktop numbers down. If all goes as planned Intel looks to have a 2 year jump on TSMC based on current timetables. But I'm worried about them adding nanosheet transistors around the same time. They got into problems before being too ambitious and having a stalled roadmap for a very long time.
jmisavage··on SVG Images from Postgres
Any language where you don’t know the syntax looks weird at first. There are 6 types of commands with 20 commands in total. Half of those use document based coordinate system and the other half are relative to the previous command.
jmisavage··on The US Might Be Only AA+
Interest payments accounted for 8% of the budget last year. We haven’t had a positive cash flow to paid down the debt since Clinton.
jmisavage··on Angular v16
Material components are a separate repo. They are not built-in.
jmisavage··on Tell HN: Reddit removed i.reddit.com and reddit.com/.compact
Oh that actually seems fast and doesn’t crash my browser
jmisavage··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla stock dropping? Meta?
I’m surprised nobody here has mention the end of year discounts they just started offering in various countries. Discounts like this are used to increase demand something Tesla hasn’t had to do in a long while. To the market that signals weakness. If it was localized to the US you could rationalize it that too many people are waiting until the new year when the new EV rebate kicks in, but they’re also doing the same thing in China, Mexico, and Canada.
