jmisavage··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
This is wildly inaccurate to the point of being dangerous advice. The goal during a bomb threat call is generally not to challenge, mock, or provoke the caller into a reaction. It is to keep the caller talking for as long as possible and gather information that could help assess the threat and assist law enforcement or security. There is no reliable rule that says a "real terrorist" will hang up if laughed at or that a hoax caller will stay on the line. People making threats behave in many different ways and simplistic tests like this are not a dependable way to determine whether a threat is real.
jmisavage··on Two days of oatmeal reduce cholesterol level
Soluble fiber in general helps lower LDL, beans and lentils work well too. One caution for diabetics, this meal could be pretty high in carbs for a single sitting depending on portions.
jmisavage··on Show HN: Picknplace.js, an alternative to drag-and-drop
Interesting concept. Not sure if I like it more than drag and drop though, but I do love explorations like this. Reminds me of the old days when Flash devs would build some truly crazy stuff.

Potential bug: The first time I tried it on my iPad, it didn’t place the item, but it did on subsequent uses.

jmisavage··on It's Time to License Software Engineering
Yes, licensing does reduce supply compared to a free-for-all. But that’s the point, it filters out people who shouldn’t be doing the work in the first place. For engineers, the PE designation means you’re legally responsible for your work.
jmisavage··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
Found the repo over here if anyone is curious.

jmisavage··on Gurus of 90s Web Design: Zeldman, Siegel, Nielsen
I thought the same thing of his website when he first hit the scene. Great info, but the design was so bad it made it difficult to read. It was quick though, and today’s reader view would have fixed that issue. Being usable doesn’t mean zero design; everything needs to work together.
jmisavage··on Show HN: Basecoat – shadcn/UI components, no React required
FYI I don't think all of your styles are loading on the page. Tried safari and firefox and it doesn't look right.
jmisavage··on Tesla hiring for Haskell Software engineer
Thus is just a link to a Reddit post that links to a LinkedIn job posting.
jmisavage··on Migrating a JavaScript Project from Prettier and ESLint to BiomeJS
I'm curious to see if anyone here has done this switch on a large project and what gains they are seeing.
jmisavage··on Vibe Coding: Developer Slot Machines (Cursor, Windsurf)
I'm not aware of that, but I also lost access to Copilot when we switched to Cursor so I can't check at the moment. That's great if you can because Claude is why people like Cursor.
jmisavage··on Ask HN: AI Replacing Engineers – Firsthand Stories?
We’re in the early stages of this transition. There’s no formal hiring freeze, but leadership has made it clear we should exhaust AI options before considering new hires. At the same time, raises and promotions are frozen this year, which has definitely caused a lot of frustration internally.

As part of this AI-first shift, all engineers now have access to Cursor, and we’re still figuring out how to integrate it. We just started defining .cursorrules files for projects.

What’s been most noticeable is how quickly some people rely too much on AI outputs, especially the first pass. I’ve seen PRs where it’s obvious that the generated code wasn’t even run or reviewed. I know this is part of the messy adjustment period, but right now, it feels like I’m spending more time reviewing and cleaning up code than I did before.

jmisavage··on Vibe Coding: Developer Slot Machines (Cursor, Windsurf)
It's a fork of VS Code that still uses the official extensions, despite that violating the license terms. Functionally, it's pretty similar to using VS Code with Copilot, but with the added bonus of choosing from multiple models. I’ve only just started using it at work, so my experience is also pretty limited, but so far the results seem slightly better.
jmisavage··on IKEA website shows a verbatim copy of the physical printed receipt in HTML
I remember when Easter eggs like this were all over the web before frontend frameworks took over. Nice to see the tradition continues.
jmisavage··on Should We Respect LLMs? A Study on Influence of Prompt Politeness on Performance
I’m still going to talk to it like a person because if I don’t then I’ll slowly start to talk to people like they’re LLMs and it’s going to sound rude.
jmisavage··on Signal Chat Leak Angers U.S. Military Pilots
This reminds me of the old military phrase "different spanks for different ranks". The higher up in the chain of command the less consequences you have.

Any enlisted person or junior officer would lose their job and face federal charges.

jmisavage··on Origami measuring spoon incites fury after 9 years of Kickstarter delay hell
All the BattleTech minis have been huge successes. I’ve supported some local ones, like a machined metal wallet, but anything with technology scares me.
jmisavage··on The DOJ still wants Google to sell off Chrome
When was the last time you tried? I have a 2012 Mac mini that runs it like a champ and has done so for a very long time. I only have a handful of plugins but uBlock Origin is one of them.
jmisavage··on BYD has already produced its first solid-state cells
This is just pilot production is the first of many steps towards mass production. They don’t expect actual production until 2027.

It even mentions that CATL is at roughly the same stage. So while good news its still going to take some time to get these into production cars and to get the costs down.

jmisavage··on Ask HN: How to handle pushback on a team switch?
Promises mean nothing. A couple of months ago, I was promised a promotion during the next review cycle. This week, HR announced at an all-hands that there won't be a review cycle or raises at all this year. The anger and disappointment I feel right now are off the charts.

Do what's best for you. If you're trying to keep things smooth, cut the grace period to a month max with a clear ramp-down plan. If you had quit, they wouldn’t have gotten even that.

jmisavage··on Modular PC Design: Sustainable Approach Enhanced Repairability Reduced E-Waste
I do miss user-upgradable RAM and storage, which seems to be absent on many laptops these days. However, I don’t share the same sentiments about the other minor features that have been integrated onto the motherboard. Anyone else remember squeezing in a modem, network card, SoundBlaster, and a video card into their case? Or the frustration of discovering that the power supply couldn’t reliably power all those components. Or wanting to upgrade your CPU only for them to change the socket again.

What I really want is something like the Samsung Dex, where you can dock a portable device into something and make it more powerful.

jmisavage··on Dutch Align with US Export Controls on Some ASML Chip Tools
Then go read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_ultraviolet_lithograph...

Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories were funded in the 1990s to perform basic research into the technical obstacles. The results of this successful effort were disseminated via a public/private partnership Cooperative R&D Agreement (CRADA) with the invention and rights wholly owned by the US government, but licensed and distributed under approval by DOE and Congress.

jmisavage··on Dutch Align with US Export Controls on Some ASML Chip Tools
It’s because the US National Laboratories developed all the initial technology to enable EUV. ASML just builds the machines.
jmisavage··on Triple Density Floppy, Anyone?
I put the death of Zip more on CD-Rs getting popular. Even if you didn’t have a writer you could read them. And then UsB thumb drives came in to clean house.
jmisavage··on Rivian (RIVN) clashes with Bosch in new legal battle over EV motors
Thankfully the exclusivity clause was finally dropped Nov of last year. Amazon has invested a lot of money into Rivian and if they want to recoup that investment it’s in their best interest not to needlessly hinder them.

Still hoping the R2 launch gets them into the mainstream and profitable.

jmisavage··on Critical vulnerabilities in 6 AWS services disclosed at Black Hat USA
For those who don't have the time to read the entire thing.

The “Shadow Resources” attack vector, which has since been addressed by AWS, stemmed from the automatic generation of S3 buckets by various AWS services, including:

- CloudFormation

- Glue

- EMR

- SageMaker

- ServiceCatalog

- CodeStar

jmisavage··on Ask HN: How do you choose a hostname for personal devices?
I’ve had pet rabbit nearly my entire life and tend to name my devices after things rabbits do or nicknames I’ve given them - hopper, sniffer, nibbler, loafy, etc…

My college computer lab used element names. The ones hardest to spell had the least amount of people connected to them.

jmisavage··on Show HN: Shade/Bs – Modern Web UIs Without Node.js

jmisavage··on Ladybird Web Browser becomes a non-profit with $1M from GitHub Founder
We had this with plugins and it was a security, performance, and compatibility nightmare.

It wasn’t that long ago you needed QuickTime and RealPlayer for videos. Then Flash, Director, Silverlight, and Java for multimedia.
