jjazwiecki··on Ask HN: Best practices for safeguarding master password in organization?
There might be some open source tools that use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamir%27s_secret_sharing, which allows you to set a threshold for a number of people in a group with distinct keys that have to coordinate to unlock them. eg 5 shares and 3 of 5 have to combine their keys to unlock.
jjazwiecki··on Citymapper Joins Via
Citymapper incorporates transit delays/outages. When I switched from using Google Maps several years ago, they didn't, and I haven't had much of a reason to switch back. Big difference between "based on average times, this is the fastest route" and "based on the latest information, this is the fastest route".
jjazwiecki··on DontBuyDell.com
Out of curiosity, what's the legality of using a brand name in a domain? Does Dell have any standing (copyright?) or is this covered (in the US, anyway) under existing free speech laws?
jjazwiecki··on MIT Predicted Society Will Collapse in 2040. Research Shows We're on Schedule
I liked "Collapse of Complex Societies" by Joseph Tainter but I'm not well-read in the area: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/477.Collapse_of_Complex_...
jjazwiecki··on What a Wuhan lab leak would mean
This is as far as my lay understanding goes: the idea was that you could better handle potential outbreaks by creating potential outbreaks in a lab, and studying them there. If you have bad priors ("we have perfect protocols, because we've never caused a global pandemic") I could see how you'd get to this being a net positive: there will be another pandemic, probably involving one of these, so let's study it before it's a pandemic.

I've thought of the intent as a little like using a fuzzer in security research, although that might not by a great analogy.

jjazwiecki··on An early look at Postgres 14: Performance and monitoring Improvements
I always thought it was a reference to valuable stuff picked from trash, which I understood to be slang from sanitation workers, but apparently that's local to the NYC area.
jjazwiecki··on Show HN: Horcrux, a Playground for Shamir Secret Sharing
that's really cool, I've been playing w/ Shamir a bit. I noticed I could change the last character of one share and still get back the secret. not every replacement character worked, though. any idea why?

jjazwiecki··on Show HN: A low-code alternative for Stripe/Twilio Integrations
How do you measure neutrality?
jjazwiecki··on Simple Bank Is Closing
I loved Simple when it started, but had to transfer away in 2018 after they rolled out some new security system which started flagging withdrawals from nearby ATMs, at stable local businesses, which I'd gone to for years, as suspicious transactions. Each time, I'd have to call to get my card unlocked. After three times, I begged their support people to please contact someone up the chain know I was closing my account because I literally couldn't get my money out. They were sympathetic but refused to countenance the idea that the transactions were incorrectly categorized.
jjazwiecki··on Von Braun Class Station
The Better Business Bureau logo in the footer actually made me more dubious.
jjazwiecki··on Danish bank launches negative interest rate mortgage
Just listened to this Bloomberg podcast, where they interviewed Viktor Shvets on the meaning/implications/future of negative interest rates: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/audio/2019-08-09/what-negativ...

> He argues that undermining the ’time value’ of money–or the principle that money available now is worth more than money in the future because you can use it to earn additional money–won’t lead to economic growth. In fact, he says, negative rates are going to end up leading to a rethink of modern capitalism and political society once people realize they have big consequences.

jjazwiecki··on Russian hackers targeted U.S. conservative think-tanks, says Microsoft
Isn't this heuristic vulnerable to asymmetric approaches to truth and polarization?
jjazwiecki··on Show HN: Larry's Cheap Houses – Deep Learning Powered Real Estate Deals
This reminds me of a question I've long had – is there no legal restriction on starting a real estate listing service?
jjazwiecki··on AMA: NY AG Schneiderman on net neutrality and protecting our voice in government
1. Is Reddit the only online newsboard you can access locally? If the answer is "no", I don't see how it's a monopoly. Aren't you...here? Posting?
jjazwiecki··on GOP lawmakers shamed on billboards for trying to repeal net neutrality rules
If we have learned literally nothing else over the past 20 years it is that incoming shame bounces off like 99.95% of these people
jjazwiecki··on The rectangularness of countries
My hypothesis is that New York is the best-shaped state because it's not too rectangular, and not to squiggly. Got a good balance of both.
jjazwiecki··on How to get rid of old stuff, sell it for more, and use Amazon as cheap storage
Ok, so each box I store gets a unique ASIN (no long term fee) and I return my items to Amazon in sellable condition (full refund & I get back Amazon's referral fee). Totally trying this with old baby gear.
