jareds··on Ask HN: If your code no longer makes sense to you, do you leave it as is?
I'm much more comfortable rewriting code if I have good unit test coverage around it.
jareds··on Wagner coup in Russia? Wagner declared war on the Russian army
Is he bold and unafraid? My thought is he believes he has a 0% chance of living to this time next year given the current way things are going. If rebelling increases his odds to 0.5% and he doesn't care about the lives of anyone else it's the logical thing to do.
jareds··on Wagner coup in Russia? Wagner declared war on the Russian army
"the best known source" is specific to each individual. I've never scene the referenced site before the post today so am unlikely to take what it says at face value with out more research. As someone who follows the news on the war by reading understandingwar.org I'm not surprised this has happened.
jareds··on Removing official support for Red Hat enterprise Linux
Why should you have to spin a VM for Redhat up in the cloud with the associated cost if no one is paying you for supporting it? If you already ahve the hardware at home to run other Linux distributions I understand not wanting to jump through hoops to support Redhat if you don't have a contract with anyone to do so.
jareds··on Reddit's Recently Announced API Changes, and the future of /r/blind
That's the way I feel. I saw an update about providing API access to accessibility specific apps but even with that I'm still not interested. Why would I want to use a site that makes limited efforts at accessibility and could revoke the ability for people to perform free labor to fix issues they have chosen to ignore?
jareds··on Reddit's Recently Announced API Changes, and the future of /r/blind
As someone who's blind I never looked at Reddit because it was not particularly easy to use with a screen reader. Now's a heck of a time to discover there are accessible ways of accessing it for the next two months.
jareds··on Oracle Cloud is having a major outage
Not all applications need high availability across multiple clouds and the cost increases that go with that. Some applications can afford a couple hours of downtime if the underlying hosting platform as issues instead of needing to do a hot failover to completely different infrastructure.
jareds··on Ask HN: Is Rust worth investing in as a reliable C-alt given its recent saga?
I was not aware that there are any recent issues with the Rust community since I don't use Rust. while technical characteristics of a language are important the ability of a community to continue supporting the language for the long term is also important. Go has Google backing it, Java has Oracle backing it, etc. Is there enough corporate use of Rust that if the current Rust community falls apart someone will create a stable version of the language and toolchain that will be maintained and updated?
jareds··on [dead]
Based on the domain this article was posted at I don't think it's worth my time to read it and determine if it is good reporting.
jareds··on A Letter from Our CEO
This was a surprise, I was expecting news on layoffs from a company I had never heard of.
jareds··on Chief of Russian mercenary force says his troops will withdraw from Bakhmut
Will a withdrawal make any difference in on the tactical or strategic level? If there already combat ineffective it may make a PR difference but is unlikely to make a difference on the ground. Don't listen to anyone who claims they know how this war will go and what major turning points are in real time.
jareds··on Apple’s Unionized Store Wants to Start Accepting Tips from Customers
Do we know if there serious about this? I'd hope the union negotiators would realize there was likely to be a backlash to this and put out this request as a bargaining point they won't fight very hard for.
jareds··on Ask HN: HN for Visually Impaired?
Given the fact that when using a screen reader the list of stories is not read with correct semantics and this has been the case for multiple years I'm guessing they don't care about accessibility.
jareds··on Ask HN: Do you work nights/weekends?
I work some nights but that's usually because I take time off during the middle of the day to exercise. When I was working a job where I felt under pressure to work nights and weekends I did so. I also left that job after less then a year because I felt the workload and expectations were unrealistic.
jareds··on Twitter is operating at breakeven and could turn profitable in matter of months
Even if it becomes profitable will it be enough to keep up with the required debt payments? If not will Elon keep selling Tesla stock to pay the debt or eventually let it go bankrupt?
jareds··on Framework Laptop 16
I use https://www.nvaccess.org/ to read what's on the screen in synthetic speech.
jareds··on Framework Laptop 16
Can you post info about them contributing to speech synthesis? I use NVDA as my screen reader with the built-in espeak synthesizer. I've been using synthetic speech so long I find I don't want natural sounding voices, I prefer more robotic sounding ones since I can listen to them at a faster rate. Vision tasks is a good point but not something that applies to me. I almost never use a webcam on my personal computer. I use my iPone for OCR although I could see a webcam being useful for OCR in some cases.
jareds··on Framework Laptop 16
As someone who's blind and wants a lot of CPU performance but doesn't care about the GPU I appreciate this. I'm torn between a desktop and a laptop when replacing my current 8 year old desktop. I'm hoping that I will be able to configure this laptop with something more powerful then the current Framework CPU's. Given the fact that I only travel two or three weeks a year it would be nice to have this act as a desktop but be able to take it with me if I wanted to.
jareds··on Framework announces AMD, new Intel gen, 16“ laptop and more
I'm in the market for a new laptop soon and am considering a Framework one. Would the 13th gen or the AMD version be good enough for basic photo editing? My wife is starting to get interested in photography. It would be nice if this could be a shared machine that I'd use most of the time and she would use for photo editing. If photo editing was something she wanted to do frequently she could always get her own machine specifically specked for that.
jareds··on It’s Game over on Vocal Deepfakes
I had not listened to the audio in the twitter thread. It's a lot better and the only issue I notice is the pauses at the end of sentences don't seem quite right. I don't know if I'd notice the pauses though if I were not going into this with a suspicious mindset. After listening to the twitter thread I'm not convinced I could detect the difference if it was two random clips one generated and one not.
jareds··on It’s Game over on Vocal Deepfakes
Was anyone else not particularly impressed by this? I haven't listened to much Steve Jobs stuff but it sounded just stilted enough for me to think something was up. I'm not sure if it was because I came into it with a skeptical mindset because of the article and context around it. It also may be do to the fact that I have been using screen reading software for about 30 years. The only people who I've heard more then synthetic speech may be my close family and I'm not sure about that. Is there anywhere that offers a test where you have to determine what is generated and what is not with random clips lacking background info?
jareds··on Ask HN: Why doesn't OpenAI care more about ChatGPT's UX?
Why do they appear to have put zero effort into making there site accessible to screen reader users? While it's usable there unlabeled buttons, no semantic way to move between different parts of a chat, and often times generated code is not read by my screen reader and I have to use the copy to clipboard button then paste it into notepad.
jareds··on Ask HN: What to Do with an Old Supercomputer?
I'd try to determine all I could about the hardware before possibly taking it. If the hardware could be scavenged or individual nodes were useful I'd try to break it down and sell it on ebay. I don't have the money or electrical service to run a data center in my basement. Even if I did my wife and children would not be allow it.
jareds··on Microsoft is testing a built-in crypto wallet in Microsoft Edge
Anyone have any alternative browser picks besides chrome, Edge, and Firefox? I found Firefox performance to be poor with my screen reading software although this was several years ago so maybe I should give it another try.
jareds··on Twitter failures go from bad to worse; users wonder how long it can stay online
Why?
jareds··on Twitter’s $42k-per-month API prices out nearly everyone
Other then the term "shitposts" what's wrong with that statement? They did make updates to give him and only him a broader reach and more views. The only reason I say "shitposts" may be an issue with the statement is because I don't feel like seeing if there's a definition for shitposts and if there is cross referencing it with the last couple months of his posts.
jareds··on Ask HN: How do you find time for everything in life?
I've accepted I don't have time to do everything I want. IN spite of that I feel like a lot of time is just disappearing. I've started tracking time over the passed couple of weeks using timery on ios and looking at my screen time usage on my phone. Turns out I spend a lot more time on Youtube and podcasts then I thought. Work is not more then 40 hours either. I haven't done anything about this data yet but at least I know what's happening.
jareds··on RISC-V Business: Testing StarFive's VisionFive 2 SBC
I wouldn't consider these mistakes or omissions. He's reviewing the board as is and not assuming future progress that may or may not take place in some undetermined time. If I'm looking for a relatively cheep single board computer to play with and am not focused on specific RISC-V development I want to buy a board for what it can do now not what it will be able to do with kernel updates that are not guaranteed.
jareds··on The Java Ecosystem Is Broken
How does someone move from sprint to Guava? From what I understand Guava provides nicer collections and utility methods which is not nearly the same thing the Spring ecosystem provides.
jareds··on Ask HN: How can I enable a dumber phone to carry sometimes?
You could set up an apple watch to only notify you for texts and calls with no other notifications or health information. I would hope smart watches like the new Google one could be configured the same.
