jaden··on The sour science driving James Harden's vexing genius
Exploiting loopholes reduces the quality of the game and it's just not as fun to watch. The idea that this is a calculated, team effort is annoying. Too bad there isn't a way to give a whole team a technical foul.
jaden··on Interview with Kyle Simpson, author of You Don’t Know JS book series
Thanks for pointing that out, fixed.
jaden··on Claims that breakfast is a health panacea may be unsupported
Skipping breakfast is my doctor-approved way of keeping my weight in check. I found myself eating a few hours after dinner, so I still have three meals a day, just not at the traditional times. And like others have said here, hunger is almost never a problem. And drinking water is a great way to satisfy the occasional hunger.
jaden··on Interview with Kyle Simpson, author of You Don’t Know JS book series
Kyle's free and open source You Don't Know series https://github.com/getify/You-Dont-Know-JS are amazing resources for Javascript developers.
jaden··on Repositories held for ransom by using valid credentials
I agree, but read that at least one of the users had 2FA enabled and still lost their repos. They said they received no notification emails either.
jaden··on Ask HN: Do you still use Antivirus in 2019?
I don't. I found anti-virus software slows machines down (especially live scanning) and causes some of the very same problems as malware.
jaden··on Ask HN: With a single site per comment, which sites do you visit regularly?
https://theweblist.net
jaden··on Bored Lonely Angry Stupid
I've found myself doing the same thing. But you can work next to someone in a cubicle for years and know less about them than you would from subscribing to someone's blog (assuming it's honest). I value in-person interaction, but I've also gotten to feel like I know people with whom I've only interacted with online, via email and MUDing back in the day.

How well you really know someone is hard to quantify.

jaden··on Paul Graham provides answer to spam emails (2002)
How does that work for free email newsletters? They're typically already paying an email service provider. Having to pay even more could be onerous for large, double opt-in lists, even though they're not spamming.
jaden··on Paying for Open Source Contributions
I'm a fan of anything that helps open source, but in my experience it's more effective if the employee is able to work on open source projects as part of their job. Then again, maybe that's just my current evening burnout talking.
jaden··on Microsimulation of Traffic Flow
After even a slight slowdown, I was unable to ever restore the vehicles to steady traffic again. Adding lanes, quick stop lights to ease the flow. It was maddening (like real traffic I guess...)
jaden··on Chatbots aren't as difficult to make as you think
This. Making a chatbot isn't difficult. Making a competent one that users can comfortably interact with is extremely difficult.
jaden··on Emissions fall in Madrid city center thanks to new traffic restrictions
At least for the Madrid metro, they have what I consider to be one of the most accessible and convenient public transportation systems I've used. And compared to Indianapolis, where I currently live, Madrid's public transport makes what we have here an embarrassment.
jaden··on The Lie Behind the Lie Detector
And it's especially scary knowing that memories can be suggested to people, to the point that they genuinely believe they experienced the false memories.
jaden··on Wharton professor says America should shorten the work day by 2 hours
From Merriam-Webster:

ensure - to make sure, certain, or safe

insure - to make certain especially by taking necessary measures and precautions

jaden··on DuckDuckGo's bang
Several years ago I built https://shortmarks.com as a way to use search shortcuts from any browser. The code isn't pretty and I haven't updated it in eons, but it works well enough.
jaden··on Show HN: Little Warden, monitoring the tedious things about websites
https://secure.expirify.com is a free option that works well. I believe I discovered it on HN.
jaden··on Ask HN: What are your favourite self-hosted tools?
Private Bin (encrypted sharing of data) - https://github.com/PrivateBin/PrivateBin

KeeWeb (for accessing KeePass database) - https://github.com/keeweb/keeweb

jaden··on Whatruns: Identify technologies used on any website
Thanks for sharing that link. Here's a bookmarklet (as opposed to the Chrome extension) to launch this on whatever site you're on:

   javascript:void(window.open('https://www.whatruns.com/website/'+window.location.hostname));
jaden··on Ask HN: Projects that don't make you money but you're doing it out of sheer joy?
https://shortmarks.com - Keyword bookmarks across browsers (I started using them in Firefox, and it was a pain to keep them in sync). It has about 1,400 users, much fewer active. I keep thinking I should rebuild it and figure out a way to make money from it.
jaden··on Ask HN: How much ad revenue you make from your side project?
The site got hit by one of Google's black box algorithm adjustments. I spoke with folks on the Adsense team and followed their advice but it's never rebounded. It was mostly organic traffic, which means it depends on the whims of search engines. (It's not a reassuring position to be in).
jaden··on Ask HN: How much ad revenue you make from your side project?
One of my sites (https://riddlesbrainteasers.com) has been a wild ride, reaching a peak of $18k/month and down to an average of around $500/month now. Monthly traffic is generally around 300k unique visitors.

Another site (http://coincollector.org) was making $300/month as long as I kept posting but after several years I grew tired and now it earns next to nothing.

jaden··on Ashley Madison founder steps down
Pinterest.
jaden··on Vanar.io – Realtime multiplayer browser game: Agar.io meets Asteroids
I like it. The controls remind me of my X-Pilot days in college. Good times.
jaden··on Tell HN: I made a chalk inspired app that works in browsers
Works great in Chrome 9.0.570.1 dev
jaden··on Bloglines is back from the dead
Is this a new fad? Xmarks and now Bloglines say they're shutting down, then get bought out after the outcry. The downside is people bail on the announcement and see no reason to return.
jaden··on Everyone Hates Ticketmaster — But No One Can Take It Down
Here's hoping they have big balls.
jaden··on Ask HN: How much are we worth?
From what I've heard (my site isn't technical so I can't say definitively) technical sites have low click through rates because many developers use adblockers and may not be as attracted to advertising. But it's hard to estimate because it can vary wildly depending on how many folks are advertising in your space. Run a month trial and see how it does.
jaden··on Ask HN: How much are we worth?
If they want you guys to join the company for some period of time, make sure to account for that in the price.

For example, if you commit to stay on some number of years and an exciting opportunity presents itself during that time, you want the compensation to be enough that you can pass on the opportunity without too much heartache.

jaden··on Ask HN: How much are we worth?
I run a site that pulls in a decent amount from Google Ads. I was contacted by a potential buyer and after going back and forth quite a bit, we arrived at around 5x annual revenue. I realize Google Ads != selling software but at least it's a data point.
