REGIONAL. Not global headquarters. Still jarring but about 10x less
jackric··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
Sounds difficult to test for. Thinking about a Pilot I think there would be data points you could measure on the job that predict likelihood of making a bad judgement. For example heart rate variability, cortisol levels, skin moisture.

I think the better solution is to abstract out the judgement into a formula that the pilot must follow, so not courting "gethereitis"

Hmm perhaps decree a method/routine to processes like nail gunning. A bit like the Japanese rail staff with their pointing routines.

Film the worksite or send surprise inspectors to catch workers too lazy/reckless about their nail gunning. Maybe show them videos of nail gun injuries!

Improper nailgunning I think is more related to ingrained attitude than ephemeral competence degraders (drugs)

jackric··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
I agree Safety is the top priority. Don't risk people with drugs traces in their blood; it may degrade their competence. Also don't risk a guy that didn't sleep last night working - his competence will be degraded.

I proposed my catch-all solution for this in another comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26183297

My ideal is we just ensure competence - guy who smoked weed last night may be more competent than a clean guy getting divorced. Test the competence

jackric··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
I have a solution to prevent this, which doesn't prejudice Mike for having a bit of weed 2 weeks ago camping. Also it will filter out those unfit to work from legal medication, or tiredness.

Make workers do a 30 second ability test before going on shift. Design the test to measure reaction speed, short term memory, etc.

[follow up thought] - Test must be immune to practice/muscle memory. Don't want a drunk passing the test through familiarity, then performing shit on the job.

jackric··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
Stupid analogy, the worker can be told to remove the headphones during paid hours, non-compliance makes you fired. We are talking about whether what you do outside of work, that is isolated from work, should get you fired.

> This makes it sound like a human is nothing more than a tool.

Yes, from your employer's perspective, you are. In fact they will replace you with a literal tool as soon as possible. That might be a burger flipping robot, or a CRUD app producing bot one day, whatever. Tools

jackric··on Leaving Mozilla
I wanted to make Firefox my default Android browser, out of principle. After 6 weeks, I uninstalled it and am back in Brave.

The Firefox address/omni bar seemed designed to lean 90% toward a search engine search, even if I had completely typed in the hostname of a previously visited page and hit "Enter". The cynic in me guessed this was deliberate to reap referral commissions from Big Search Engine. Pissed off, uninstall

jackric··on Leaving Mozilla
Brave is excellent at blocking ads by default (and based off Chrome). Its tracking prevention is a double edged sword: lots of sites with reCAPTCHA make me prove I'm human, because Google can't leverage any browsing footprint to guess that I am credibly human. It's inconvenient but a welcome reminder of how profiled normal web users are.

True of nearly any auction. Actual buyers stop bidding when they think the price has exceeded the value to them. If the music stops with a fake bidder holding the bag, the auction will have to be re-held, now with increased scepticism by real bidders, likely securing a lower final price.

Curious about your thought process to leave VSCode for vim? I've been a long time vim user, but I've seemingly just surrendered to the ease of installing high quality extension in VScode. Just seems to work as advertised without me toiling in some config setup (vimrc)

I use the Vim extension in VSCode for editing with my vim muscle memory, even though it has occasional snags/surprises

jackric··on SpaceX acquires former oil rigs to serve as floating Starship spaceports
How about reaching a dying father a few hours faster? A middle class person might judge the extra $5-10k (from savings) worth it.

If SpaceX/energy company deploys a new nuclear power plant (and one day fusion) to provide the energy, why should you care? It's a new energy source and not competing away your personal idea of worthwhile energy use.

Then price in carbon neutral fuel production to the ticket. There will be passengers rich enough to pay it.

If you've got a problem with that I imagine your real issues are about status envy not environmentalism.

jackric··on DALL·E: Creating Images from Text
Yes you rephrased that very well.

If your plan to build intelligence is by copying how nature does it, well then you'll need to build a "nature" runtime that can emulate the universe. You can either do that slowly or inaccurately

jackric··on DALL·E: Creating Images from Text
> The entire human body is built from 700MB of data in the DNA.

I think this notion is misleading. It doesn't relate to the ease of simulation it on our current computers. You'll need a quantum computer to emulate this ROM in anything like realtime.

The DNA program was optimised to execute in an environment offering quantum tunnelling, multi component chemical reactions etc.
