jacknobody··on Elon Musk Pledges Tesla’s Commitment to China’s ‘Core Socialist Values’
Who believes in this man anymore, whom first we applauded for his dreams?

He took the world's money and promised us Mars, but he has turned out to be nothing but another tin duke.

jacknobody··on Eric Schmidt: The Future of War Has Come in Ukraine: Drone Swarms
How long before these practiced swarms come for the rest of us?

jacknobody··on Making and Keeping Friends
All that's good. Friendship is a form of love, without which no one can be happy.

Some people believe that the work of love is the most worthwhile work and that nothing else has any ultimate meaning. However, acting such a belief out in the world is considered unrealistic, insane.

Then how can the world become happy?

jacknobody··on The ghost of Ramanujan lives on And her name is Cleo
:) Thanks!
jacknobody··on Are there programming languages which handle equations?
Scilab is free, reliable and very similar to Matlab. I believe an arm of the French Government is responsible for it.

I use an old hp48gx calculator which can convert a program into an algebraic expression. The calculator can be downloaded free. Search for emu48

jacknobody··on Communication systems determine human alignment
I can't agree that improvement in communications can, by itself, bring people into alignment.

People can only work together towards the same goals once they share the same values.

Some people sit on a beach with a friend. They gather simple food and make a fire, and that's all they want. "This is enough for me!" they say.

Some people feel that they need "things". Cars, drugs, hot life in the laser-bright light and more and more sensation. "I'll never have enough!" they say.

Some people love one another and love the Creator; some believe in the reality of life after death.

Until all people believe in the same good, how can they be on the same team?

jacknobody··on Write for Us
Look I know this guy who ran a vanity publishing house with limited success. I think that more people are interested in other personal services and even the ones who provide those services find themselves doing hard work for poor pay.

Your business can be no better than your service, in the long run, and your service will only suit a very few people, so I think your opportunities to make money are likely to be few.

jacknobody··on Elon Is Speedrunning the Enshittification Learning Curve
I find these arguments make sense.

As far as I know, the value of a business is ultimately decided by the service which it gives to its customers. This suggests a long-term strategy of service before profit.

There have always been a few companies running the "service" strategy, not necessarily on the internet. Such a company that I knew of as a child was New Zealand's L.V. Martin, which promised complete satisfaction or the company would put everything right. This policy was implemented according to an almost fundamentalist interpretation; I never heard of even the most unreasonable person feeling that L V Martin had cheated them .. it was hard to believe that the company made money! Yet this company did make money.

I should think that the employment of a huge team of moderators (absolutely NOT an AI), to personally examine every post with a view to keeping things sane, might be a good way to provide a service that people would want. That sounds expensive but it's the only way to go, mister! Anything else is death!

jacknobody··on Write for Us
So,we pay for you to edit and present our work? Is your magazine well known? Are you spending lots on advertising?

I'm not seeing much in it for me... perhaps I'm missing something.

jacknobody··on The ghost of Ramanujan lives on And her name is Cleo
Sorry Mr Musk - I won't be joining your social control organisation, not even to find out about "Cleo". Good luck attracting other suckers... see ya when we're dead.
jacknobody··on The Knowledge: How to rebuild our world from scratch
If this world and all it's technology were to disappear and leave me with a bunch of friends in sole possession I do not think that we would want to rebuild this horrible situation from scratch.
jacknobody··on Disturbing facts about ProtonMail (2021)
So, who was born yesterday anyway. Didn't we notice that the world has been taken over by students of Machiavelli? Did you have something productive to say about it - like for instance wtf can we actually do about this constant bs?
jacknobody··on The choice between a poorer today and a hotter tomorrow
This whole problem arises from a wrong interpretation of wealth; the values that drive the notions of wealth are wrong

Wealth is sufficiency, plus some luxury. People have become used to the idea that tomorrow will always bring an incremental improvement or increase in that luxury. People now believe that a constantly improving "standard of living" will make them happy.

At school I was taught that people need food, water, shelter, clothing, and each other. All else is luxury. We're very good at the first 4 of these items, but it's the 5th item on the list of needs that gives us trouble.

The real needs we fail to address, which keep us from being a happy society, lie in the sphere of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.

The need for more is an illusion.

jacknobody··on Blowing in the wind: why do so many cities have poor east ends?
Maybe because the prevailing wind delivers constant fresh air to the western part of the cities. The industrial sites in the east part of the city are hence not smelled by the wealthy homes in the west.
jacknobody··on Show HN: Simple way to print and mail a document
The mail is slow and faltering, as well as expensive, yet emails aren't always a good answer to the need for communication... I find my guts seizing up, just a little - but that's all it takes to mess up the flow of thought that pours onto the page. I like to sit in the dappled sunlight and think of my friend, as I write.

I take photos of my completed handwritten letters. I send the photos as email attachments, and keep copies too.

I can do much the same with forms, but I find I have to point out the existence of the attachments in the main body of the text.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: What is a regular task you’d prefer delegating to somebody else?
Looking for a good girlfriend
jacknobody··on New York Hero hurls pizza at City Hall after crackdown on 'wood burning ovens.'
Yay!
jacknobody··on Ask HN: Why is solo novel writing more socially acceptable than solo indie dev?
I've read many thousands of novels. I read (and write) out of loneliness. Is it the same for you? Would you be here, reading these words, in preference to sharing happy time with a close friend? I thought not.

Through reading novels I get to know the author. I hear their intimate thoughts and can try to place myself at their point-of-view. It's like talking with a clever conversationalist.

I can't see anything like that ever going on with games. Games work on actions, whose meanings are limited to the state space within which the game is conducted.

Writing is a form of human relationship, and relationships work on love. In writing - even this writing - I find myself always considering you, the reader. I try to become you, in a sense, so as to anticipate your responses. Therefore, writing develops my compassionate skills. Maybe that's what makes writing a more socially important thing.

jacknobody··on Ignoring boys' emotional needs fuels public health risks
Yes, neglect destroyed my health and social life too, and the men I meet in the places I meet them are very often from the same kind of background.

Our childhood needs were not met, hence we lacked the common lovedness that draws social groups together. In later life we find it difficult to form good relationships and find it difficult to function as part of a team.

I believe that neglect is the single most important cause of health issues. Neglect is however almost impossible to diagnose, because it is a lack, and not a thing in itself.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: What do you guys think about intermittent fasting for losing weight
As far as I can see, much unwanted weight gain is mandated by hormones. So I told my besty, who is 50, that she might blamelessly allow her waist to thicken, her hair to lose its redness and become grey. It's ok.

I sometimes wonder why so many people have so much trouble with their bodies and diet. It's obviously a really big problem for a lot of people and it very much upsets me, actually, that I have no such problems. I wonder why it's so hard for you. I wonder what it would be like for me if you were my brother or sister, and you had this kind of trouble.

I want to point out that in New Zealand, where I grew up among quite unremarkable children in a small city, only perhaps 1 child in 1000 was obviously obese. We had heard of neither obesity nor anorexia. I'm in my mid 60's.

Nowadays I organise my life for minimal stress and get fresh air and eat fresh food from a tropical market. Maybe that helps

jacknobody··on Titan sub vs. refugee trawler: how much is a human life worth?
Your question seems to betray you - "How much" indeed... You seem to expect that a human life should be valued on the same scale as material goods - in dollars.

What changes would someone have to make in themselves in order to discover the real value of life? If they were to make those changes, would they be better off?

jacknobody··on Ask HN: Is there a need for web peer-to-peer file sharing?
Look on Wikipedia
jacknobody··on Sorry, Joe Rogan: Scientists should never debate anti-vaccine quacks. Here's why
Mark Twain spoke against arguing with idiots, saying that they would drag you down to their own level and beat you with experience.

Doubtless it's all a matter of perspective, as to who's the idiot, but if you apply Twain's advice whenever you encounter unreasonable resistance you can nearly always save yourself a lot of energy.

jacknobody··on Twitter and Reddit: All Social Media Sites Will Die (and Get Replaced)
I think that for fundamental reasons, the main thesis is correct.

We live in a world where change begets change; any engineer will see that this is an exponentiating process, capable of "runaway" change.

I think that the information world is very easily changed, compared to the physical world.

No structure can withstand exponentiating change - quod est demonstrandum.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: Does having a good memory aid or hinder creativity?
I'm really badly faceblind and besides could probably lose a searchlight in a letterbox, but I'm bright so I solve (and re-solve!) lots of things from first principles whenever I need them. I don't seem to have trouble coming up with good hypotheses under pressure and I'm a good inventor.

Anyway for what it's worth I think memory is a faculty like an arm or leg, but creativity is quite different and pertains somehow to the person's "spirit".

jacknobody··on [dead]
I noticed a lot of emotional language in this post, and wonder whether anybody can take it seriously.

This certainly doesn't seem at all like a scientist's work to me, and in fact is the kind of moralising that leads me to wonder - what can be the values of the person who wrote it?

jacknobody··on A barrel is big enough to carry a person over Niagara Falls
A seat cushion is big enough to carry a person over the Niagara Falls.
jacknobody··on If you can’t tell a story about it, it isn’t real
Only things that can be described exist.

A thing is something that can be thought about.

The description of something new causes the new thing to exist.

jacknobody··on Neuroscience confirms that to be happy, you will always need something more
I conflate Love with Happiness; with Kindness; with Sweetness.

Happiness is good relationship with oneself.

Happiness is knowing that you are loved, and that your love is valued.

Happiness is like the sunshine...
