jacknobody··on Ask HN: How to transcribe 1000s of handwritten notes
If you also gave all that text, with its audio, to the putative AI, it might have enough training material to learn to read your handwriting.
jacknobody··on Ask HN: How to seriously learn analog electronics?
That's a good reply, although I can't conceive of "negative frequencies".
jacknobody··on Ask HN: How to seriously learn analog electronics?
Well, if Horowitz and Hill aren't doing it for you I'm not sure what can help, short of trade or professional training. What kinds of things do you want to be able to fix?
jacknobody··on Microsoft is killing offline maps in the Maps app
It's time for me to prepare for internet outages with hard copies, not only of maps but all important reference material.
jacknobody··on [dead]
I must admit, that is indeed succinct.

Now, all you need is to define your point of focus, and you're set!

jacknobody··on Ask HN: How to transition from non-fiction to fiction reading?
Read heavy fiction. Try Jorge Luis Borges, or the Nobel winning J M Coetzee.

Krishnamurti is worth a read.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: What do you think of this idea for a 2d Rubik's Cube like puzzle?
Probably a good game for those who like numbers (me!). Can you realise the puzzle as a physical model?
jacknobody··on I'd like to tell you a quick, remarkable story
:)
jacknobody··on Ask HN: How do I code offline for a week?
I got "allergic" to computers but I still like algorithms and playing with mathematical/logical structures. I spent some time in the Australian outback with nothing but a pencil and a block of paper. I had heard of topology in science fiction books so I decided to study that from scratch. Soon I had discovered a family of hyperdimensional geometries that led me to an efficient algorithm for the complete resolution of a traveling salesman problem and a non-Boolean logic. Therefore I think that creativity (work!) in preparation for coding doesn't need anything but a curious mind.
jacknobody··on Why should we not divide by zero?
I think it's a matter of convention, and that all the maths I can think of survives the following definitions:

If infinity were to be defined as immeasurably large, and zero as immeasurably small, we would be saying infinity=(some finite number)/0 and 0=(some finite number/infinity

This still leaves us unable to find an definite answer to the multiplication of 0 and infinity, because we might have chosen any 2 finite numbers for the definitions above.

jacknobody··on Could we burn iron for energy instead of fossil fuels?
There's also a lot of waste aluminium, which might be usable in furnaces.
jacknobody··on First principles for working on your ideas
I really like the last one - " 22 The fastest way to get into a productive mindset is to feel a responsibility for living a life of service."

I just think service is really cool.

jacknobody··on I made a fake progress bar to shut up clients complaining about my app freezing
My progress bar froze?
jacknobody··on Ask HN: Do rich people worry about their personal security?
It looks to me that rich celebrities have to spend vast amounts on security. They can't go to the beach; can't go to the supermarket; can't in fact do anything normal.

Some very rich folk I know are discreet with their wealth. If they were show-offs they'd need lots of security, but nobody knows them so nobody tries to take their things or hurt them.

jacknobody··on How to Become Wise
"If the fool would only persist in his folly, he would become wise" So said Solomon.

In context, that means "Stick to one path until you discover its deficiencies."

jacknobody··on Did our ancestors nearly die out?
Not long ago, it was discovered through mitochondrial DNA studies that all modern humans have a common female ancestor, who was dubbed "Eve". https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_Eve

This science.org article supports the " mitochondrial Eve" hypothesis.

jacknobody··on LIBS confirms the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface
Would we know already if water was coming up from the lunar depths?
jacknobody··on LIBS confirms the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface
Do you think that there might be hot springs on the Moon? Why not... our volcanoes on Earth bring water to the surface. That sounds like the kind of discovery that this mission is all about.
jacknobody··on Ask HN: How do you find interesting things?
Find interesting things? HN helps.

Otherwise, there are no fundamentally uninteresting things in the world and everything a person can study will add to the depth of their knowledge.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: Are cold showers safe for immunocompromised people?
Anybody not a doctor who gives medical opinions online to anonymous questioners is probably not very good at thinking and can't be expected to give useful answers.

Perhaps you could speak anonymously to a doctor or nurse practitioner by telephone.

(In Australia such a service is run by the Federal Government.)

jacknobody··on Frequent and infrequent users of social media respond differently to rewards
Anywhere. Sorry, but people don't always understand and some die as a result.

Maybe it should have been flagged for off-topic hopelessness.

jacknobody··on 'CBT waste of money': Popular talking therapy is not a long-term solution
It's sad that the article offers no hope; some people will read it and come away very sad. I would like to say that there is hope.

I come from Hell, which is also called utter neglect.

Intensive CBT 30 years ago did not help me, but I did find an answer.

I was lucky enough to find someone who needed help herself, and I decided to see if giving care to someone else would help me, in some kind of reflexive way. I looked after the lady for several years, until she passed away.

I come from Hell, but I'm well on my way somewhere much better.

jacknobody··on Frequent and infrequent users of social media respond differently to rewards
Me too, but... umm... HN?
jacknobody··on Frequent and infrequent users of social media respond differently to rewards
Social media is about me feeling that what I say matters. Of course my opinion doesn't matter but that's beside the point. I can be brought to feel that my opinion matters.

A worthwhile social activity is care for the needy. It actually generates love. No love is generated through social media.

The problem isn't in the technology - it's in our silly idea that there's something better in the world than loving, and being loved.

jacknobody··on Implications of Approaching the Singularity
I guess we will have to implement the Universal Basic Income as you say, in the end. But there's no path for those whose jobs will be lost, and whose families will be at risk, in the meanwhile.

It still looks like a lot of people will come under tremendous stresses and that the human cost of change will be high.

jacknobody··on Thoughts about what worked in math circles
This is great! Home school teachers - take notice!
jacknobody··on The Silicon Valley elite who want to build a city from scratch
Build Heaven in your own heart - you won't be sorry :)
jacknobody··on Implications of Approaching the Singularity
Much of what you say is true, but that won't change people's lives right now, because of the needs of children and associated mortgages, etc. You point out that the need for change is upon us, but your essay on the need for change does not come conveniently packed with an explanation of what we might change to; we need a credible goal before we can begin to change our lives.
jacknobody··on The Silicon Valley elite who want to build a city from scratch
Yes!!
