The choice between a poorer today and a hotter tomorrow

Wealth is sufficiency, plus some luxury. People have become used to the idea that tomorrow will always bring an incremental improvement or increase in that luxury. People now believe that a constantly improving "standard of living" will make them happy.
At school I was taught that people need food, water, shelter, clothing, and each other. All else is luxury. We're very good at the first 4 of these items, but it's the 5th item on the list of needs that gives us trouble.
The real needs we fail to address, which keep us from being a happy society, lie in the sphere of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.
The need for more is an illusion.
But there isn't. The people who sell fossil fuels have been very clear about that. Anything you do to solve climate change will leave you poorer. So just keep buying the fossil fuels. There is no alternative.
