I didn't mess with swappiness, but I also didn't have a swap.
ivank··on Finding a bug in Win10 BOOTMGR when chaining to NTLDR
That worked with MBR boot, but with UEFI, Windows will notice you have Boot* variables in motherboard NVRAM pointing to a Linux install that doesn't exist, then clear them for you.
ivank··on Finding a bug in Win10 BOOTMGR when chaining to NTLDR
This took me a while to figure out, but if you use UEFI, and have Windows and Linux on different drives / different EFI system partitions, you can use grub-install --force-extra-removable to keep Linux bootable after Windows helpfully clears out the NVRAM Boot* variables: https://github.com/ludios/ubuntils/blob/master/bin/reinstall...

Many years ago, Google Search existed only on http:// and schools used filters to block searches that they didn't like. Then Google shipped https:// for search on www.google.com, upset the schools because they could no longer block just some searches, then moved encrypted search to encrypted.google.com so that the entire domain could be blocked: https://cloud.googleblog.com/2010/06/an-update-on-encrypted-...

ivank··on Why the Elixir language has great potential
I have used both (though Clojure less). I have not built distributed applications in Elixir yet, so I do not focus on those features in this comment. I prefer Elixir because:

1. My brain thinks in terms of editing lines, not s-expressions; I didn't get the hang of paredit, and editing without paredit required really tedious edit operations.

2. Elixir's understanding of types matches Erlang's and the host VM, while Clojure invents its own uni-typed IObj but runs on a typed VM. Interop with Java required adding type annotations. Elixir/Erlang interop seems to be almost entirely pain-free.

3. Elixir has a lot of syntax niceties like triple-quoted strings that automatically remove indents. And pattern matching everywhere.

4. I can feasibly (and in fact, have) audited and built all of my Elixir and Erlang dependencies from git repositories, while doing the same with the Maven dependencies needed for a typical Java project would be almost impossible. I wouldn't even know where to begin with bootstrapping all the necessary Maven plugins.

5. Elixir/Erlang has per-process garbage collection and memory limits, though I haven't taken advantage of these yet.

I wrote https://github.com/ludios/mute-new-tabs and I am now happier with a quiet Chrome. The idea is to mute all new tabs and unmute them only when you interact with an in-page volume control (or manually unmute via the tab icon/context menu). This solves only the sound problem though, not the data consumption.

ivank··on “Most serious” Linux privilege-escalation bug ever is under active exploit
Note the "HWE" (hardware enablement) on that chart. Ubuntu 14.04 came with 3.13; if you want a 4.4 kernel, you have to install linux-generic-lts-xenial.

ivank··on Ask HN: Strange bug workarounds?
I've got Intel graphics and a 4K monitor on Linux. With the Intel drivers, I have no vsync (I can't use TearFree because of strange video corruption issues), but things mostly run correctly. With modesetting drivers, I have triangular tearing and serious performance issues in Sublime Text, but _do_ have vsync in fullscreen.

My workaround for watching movies with vsync? Use Intel drivers in my main X session, modesetting in a secondary X session just for mpv.

ivank··on Systemd-logind must be restarted to prevent delay
Yes, that is in fact why I submitted it. It took a while to figure out it wasn't happening just because my server was overloaded.

ivank··on Why I’m Suing the US Government
> Fair Use always trumps the DMCA

This is not necessarily the case.

> However, in a number of cases involving DVD decryption courts have held that there is no fair use defense in circumvention cases. In Universal City Studios v. Reimerdes, 111 F. Supp. 2d 294, 322 (S.D.N.Y. 2000), the court stated that "[i]f Congress had meant the fair use defense to apply to such actions, it would have said so."[5]

ivank··on Git for Windows accidentally creates NTFS alternate data streams
Also, add too many xattrs and you can no longer get a list of them:

As noted in xattr(7), the VFS imposes a limit of 64 kB on the size of
the extended attribute name list returned by listxattr(7). If the
total size of attribute names attached to a file exceeds this limit,
it is no longer possible to retrieve the list of attribute names.
