iscrewyou··on Repairs of leaning San Francisco skyscraper on hold
This is how some other professions operate. In a strict sense of what a profession is supposed to be and not counting the economic factor, doctors care more about loss of life than loss of a limb. If they have to save your life by cutting off your limb, they will.

If you read the building code (I have), sudden collapses are something that need to be avoided at all cost, think the recent sky scraper in Florida.

Restoring a structure instead of rebuilding after damage puts a lot of responsibility on the Civil Engineers because ultimately they are the ones who sign off on the plans that basically say this structure will not collapse at the blink of an eye. Older buildings get retrofitted all the time but those are also very expensive. Retrofitting is done to bring the building up to code and not fix a damaged building.

iscrewyou··on Twitter starts to require login to view tweets
This is what has prevented me from joining tik tok. Now it also requires a login after you view like three videos. I just close the tab afterwards. It works great!
iscrewyou··on Going back to work? No, thank you
Long term lookout, I think companies who requiring people to go to the office because of nature of their work will likely pay employees more. Employees who need the extra money won’t mind going into the office.

And companies are already reducing pay based on distance of employees’ homes if they choose to work from home.

I think the market will automatically balance itself out in a few years.

iscrewyou··on Gaming can officially improve mental health: 5 essential relaxing titles to play
To me at least, when nudging in gaming is associated with monetary payments to the company, it is not for my benefit, mental or otherwise. There's a difference between loot boxes and season passes and it's up to us to understand that.

A well laid out payment structure when it comes to gaming is the best way to distinguish this.

iscrewyou··on Clubhouse Is a Cargo Cult
It's an interesting take but the phenomenon is obvious in other alternatives to Clubhouse. Like the Spotify backed Greenroom. I signed up and waltzed in because Clubhouse hadn't sent an invite yet. Got an eerie feeling listening in some rooms.

These apps can be a good supplement to likes of HAM radio for non-technical people but who knows what will become as things continue to ramp back up to being normal again for physical interactions.

iscrewyou··on Giraffes are as socially complex as elephants

iscrewyou··on Capitol Hill's mystery soda machine
This but with the Mario games. I couldn’t believe it there were shortcuts in the first game. Someone told me and I didn’t believe them. Same with contra and how you could have more than 3 lives. The shortcuts spread through word of mouth and some you wouldn’t find out after years of gameplay.
iscrewyou··on Why does the New menu even exist for creating new empty files?
I can relate. I work with CADD software. Throughout the day I will jump between projects in different survey zones. It’s much faster to copy an existing file in a given zone and open it than go through menus and apply certain settings for each file. In fact, the first file I make for a project is projectname_blank. Then this gets copied everywhere.
iscrewyou··on I Fired Myself
Frozen fruit is an excellent alternative to dessert and other sweets. Costco has plenty of options of good quality frozen fruits.
iscrewyou··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”
Not sure why you are getting downvoted because you are telling the truth. Here are some links for reference: https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/6819268/Pandemic-Play...

The unit was disbanded. Agree or disagree why it was disbanded, nothing was created to replace it. This is one of many examples of how things were/are worse than they needed to be.

iscrewyou··on Why is standing more tiring than walking? [audio]
I feel this in my toes everyday but it’s only when I sit down for prolonged periods. Once I move around, it goes away.

iscrewyou··on Study shows how taking short breaks may help our brains learn new skills
> "An experiment began when a subject was shown the code “41234” on a screen and asked to type it out as many times as possible for 10 seconds and then take a 10 second break. Subjects were asked to repeat this cycle of alternating practice and rest sessions a total of 35 times."

I was hoping this would be about taking a few days or weeks off from whatever you are learning and have that break strengthen that skill. It's worked for me for several things in the past when I get bored or burnt out. When I get back to the task after about a week or so, I instantly understand the task I was learning. Also, some things that weren't clear before suddenly make sense.

iscrewyou··on The most expensive number in engineering
Can’t tell if this is sarcasm.

Because of goal of civil engineering is building man made objects with public safety in mind.

iscrewyou··on The most expensive number in engineering
Factor of Safety or F.S. for short was something us civil engineers were taught to never forget. You got grades deducted if you solved the problem correctly but forgot to include it in the very last line.

It makes sure we calculate the loads correctly and use appropriate materials. You can't fix a bad design.

The Arkansas bridge that has been in the news lately probably would have collapsed if it wasn't for the F.S. https://www.ardot.gov/divisions/public-information/40-ms-riv...

iscrewyou··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
0.32mm Pilot G2s are my favorite. I usually buy the green, black, blue, and red in packs of 10.

They are a pleasure to write with. They are more prone to the bullhead not functioning if dropped but overtime these pens have taught me to take care of my pens. Now I can actually get the pens depleted all way.

iscrewyou··on How image search works at Dropbox
I really think this is a missed opportunity in the photo space. There are plenty of editors and tools for photos out there. They can provide something that helps with organization.

Dropbox will do wonders if they had a Picasa like client that simply looked into the Dropbox folders and created albums based on folders and sub-folders structure.

iscrewyou··on Writing books is not really a good idea
It’s confusing but the percentage figure means that 2.6 million individual titles were sold or available to be bought. Only 268 of those titles sold over 100k.
iscrewyou··on Amazon Fake Reviews Scam Exposed in Data Breach
Yeah, the product art on the pages is nothing short of dollar store art.
iscrewyou··on Crazy New Ideas
I was young when that was first announced and privacy wasn't as big deal or a concern as it is these days. I remember it making the news and me being excited about it and noticing how fast everything was. It took a day or two for my brain to catch up and ask "this means they have access to everything?"

I abandoned it right away.

iscrewyou··on Show HN: Control your Bose headphones from your Mac's menubar
On the plus side(sarcastically), an app that doesn’t have a subscription model!
iscrewyou··on Mars Ingenuity helicopter mission extended by NASA
Inversely, I blame congress and general population to be more critical on a mission failure (non-life threatening) than they need to. Rocket science and operating toys on another planet isn't easy.

The way it is now, it's a feedback loop that's working for everyone.

iscrewyou··on Resetting the App Store
Zelle, a monopolized bank service, where banks can monitor it? Or ACH so my app will be delivered in 3 business days? A lot of the options for payment and what’s good for the consumer just seem so much worse than what apple is offering now.

There’s a lot more people than developers. And to a user, it doesn’t matter who takes what money. As long the transaction is frictionless and Apple’s advertisements about privacy sell, there won’t be much push from the consumer side.

iscrewyou··on Resetting the App Store
I’ve abandoned many apps because of subscription push. Subscriptions are somewhat like credit cards. I wonder if people realize the monthly increase in prices to their bills is like signing up for cable back in the day.

Sometimes the simplest app having a subscription seems like pure greed from the developer. The excuses are generally that of increase in development costs. But maybe that is equivalent to increasing the cost of development like increasing the cost of living when there is extra money coming in.

iscrewyou··on Jaguar Land Rover to suspend output due to chip shortage
That is exactly the situation they are in. They have plans/contingency plans to make sure they don’t end up in a similar situation while the other manufactures don’t. Their plans paid off and the others’ bet not on having the plan...well that also paid off.
iscrewyou··on High-dimensional characterization of post-acute sequalae of Covid-19
> We show that beyond the first 30 days of illness, people with COVID-19 exhibit higher risk of death and health resource utilization. Our high dimensional approach identifies incident sequalae in the respiratory system and several others including nervous system and neurocognitive disorders, mental health disorders, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, malaise, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, and anemia.

> To our knowledge, this is the largest post-acute COVID-19 study to date involving 73,435 non-hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and 4,990,835 controls (corresponding to 2,070,615.52 person years of follow-up), and 13,654 hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and 13,997 patients hospitalized with seasonal influenza (corresponding to 12,179.05 person years of follow-up). We leveraged the breadth and depth of the US Department of Veterans Affairs national health care databases — the largest nationally integrated healthcare delivery sys- tem in the US — to undertake a comprehensive high-dimensional com- parative approach (relative to control groups) to identify the 6-months health outcomes and clinical manifestations in COVID-19 patients who survived the first 30 days of COVID-19 illness.

iscrewyou··on Spotify is killing the open podcast ecosystem (2020)
Lately, I've even been scared of listening to music other than my usual taste (e.g. a radio hit, a foreign song, song in one of those instagram videos) because their algorithm seems to amplify my "smart" playlists with anything that's different.

There should be an option to turn off simple things like that: turn off podcasts, pause learning from my music for then next 30 minutes, etc.

I always thought the advantage of standalone apps like Spotify(updated anytime) vs something like Apple Music(updated on big iOS releases) is that they can iterate faster. But seems like they are throwing more eggs in content creation basket than UX.

iscrewyou··on Netflix lost 9% of the market share as competition increases
Disney+ is the ultimate additional subscription not the sole subscription on a bank statement.
iscrewyou··on Netflix lost 9% of the market share as competition increases
Speaking of Spotify, on one hand, I think publishers will drag it down while raising royalties as they see Spotify making profits. Essentially choking Spotify’s profit.

On the other hand, I don’t see them doing that so much that the only player left in the market is Apple who then will get to call the shots again like it did before streaming.

So, I think Spotify will survive, but barely. And that’s what the networks should’ve done to Netflix if they don’t want piracy in the future. Except Netflix doesn’t have to have everything in its catalog. It can certainly say no to certain media if the terms are unfair. Maybe the studios saw that and think there is no other option. Just thinking out loud at this point.
