huuu··on 5K iMac Gets 10-Bit Color
Yes but that's an interface problem.

Ofcourse you can't provide more decimals than the number of bits used by the float.

EDIT:

  0.999 * 255 (8 bit) = 255
  0.9999 * 255 (8 bit) = 255
  0.999 * 4096 (12 bit) = 4092
  0.9999 * 4096 (12 bit) = 4096
So for lower color depths the number of decimals isn't that important.

A lot of software already use normalized RGB.

rgb(1.0, 1.0, 1.0) == white

huuu··on WebAssembly: a binary format for the web
Posted some time ago, a .NET implementation and discussion:

https://github.com/WebAssembly/ilwasm

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10162793

I also have to think about the new image file format posted some time ago: FLIF (http://flif.info/). With WebAssembly you could implement this in the browser by just embedding a lib. No need to wait for the vendors to support it.

huuu··on Protopiper: Physically Sketching Room-Sized Objects at Actual Scale
Very cool.

This reminds me of a talk by Brett Victor [1] "The Humane Representation of Thought".

Brett thinks we are limiting ourselfs by expressing our thoughts in a mostly 2D scaled down domain.

This protopiper is a great example of what we will see in the future.

huuu··on OS X 10.11 buffer overflow with deep filesystem hierarchy
What about sending someone a zip with such a directory structure?
huuu··on An update on our response to the refugee and migrants crisis
Side note: I think what Google does is great. But I am somehow dissapointed that this low bandwidth energy saving site isn't the norm.
huuu··on Web Fonts Collateral Damage of Ad Blockers
There are two issues:

  The use of bad fonts
The loading of fonts via third parties
iOS did have a very bad font in the past but the font was embedded. With an OS you don't have to worry about a third party that might track you or serve you some infected font.

Add blockers block those third party fonts.

Personally I block all fonts via a Firefox setting because my dinner is served much faster and still tastes good (or better)

huuu··on Aquarium Corals of Anchorage Poison Humans, Dogs, and Cat
I had a low tech reef tank so I know it's possible to keep one at very low cost. But because everything is so fragile you have to know what you are doing. That's why most serious reef keepers know about this coral. Those corals can make you blind if you are not careful.
huuu··on Apple Speeds Up Electric-Car Work
Yes, but farmers already start to complain. When a machine breaks down they now have to wait for a specialist to come and fix it.
huuu··on Apple meets California officials to discuss self-driving car
To me it feels Apple and Uber are years behind Google. Today it's not very difficult to build a self driving car. But over the years Google developed a gigantic network of all kinds of data used by the cars.
huuu··on One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in my career
Since CSS2/3 I never touched design programs again to design websites and web apps. It's so easy to trow a basic interface together and then use CSS to give it nice looks. So this became my way of work:

  * Build a simple HTML template as interaction design
  * Add some basic design (style, color, fonts)
  * With the customer fine tune the design
  * Add code to the templates to make it all work (or hand it over to development)
Ofcourse you still need design experience. You are just using other tools.
huuu··on Hit Charade
This also reminds me of Carol Kaye, a female bass player who, because she is a woman and too old for the industrie, remained unknown while playing a lot of songs for the famous.

huuu··on Dark corners of Unicode
This is why you should provide a locale for most sting functions in C# for example. I think this article is mostly about bad unicode support in programming languages.
huuu··on The Threat Coming by Land
Land should be from the country not owned by a private entity. This fixes a lot of issues.
huuu··on Finally, it will be possible to flip someone off via emoji
Edit: mmm HN doesnt allow posting or can't save the UTF-8 middle finger..

Edit2: It appears that HN is blocking most unicode chars because people used it for spammy titles.

huuu··on The Internet of Way Too Many Things
It's the Internet of Way Too Many Insecure Things That Never Get Updated that worries me most...

When your house has one door and two windows it isn't very hard to lock your house. Having gadgets you forgot about is another story.

huuu··on Why Elephants Don’t Explode: How Nature Solves Bigness
The Sauropoda did not live in the sea as far as we know it.
huuu··on How the Dutch got their cycling infrastructure (2011)
As Christopher Alexander explains in his books: we forgot how important it is to build for humans. I think that's the core of the problem.

But sometimes it's difficult to see what this means. Building roads for cars isn't bad because it's helping humans to travel. But when car roads overtake the pleasure of being outside something went wrong.

huuu··on Ad Blocking Extensions Tested for Performance
I'm not sure: isn't it faster to just refuse the request than directing it to localhost and waiting for a time out?
huuu··on The Foo at bar.com
Remember there are special domain names you can use to enter fake email addresses like example.com[1]

I also entered addresses I thought were fake. But there are so many registered domain names you can't make sure they are really fake.

huuu··on How “oldschool” graphics worked [video]
Very cool! I wonder if the rise of isometric games have something to do with the pixel down scaling. Isometric games do make use of the 'horizontal pixels'.
huuu··on Working Toward Bret Victor's “Learnable Programming”
Currently Alive offers two licenses: Individual and Enterprise. I searched the site but I can't find any information.

Does anyone know the difference?

huuu··on Developers who can build things from scratch
I think most commenters misread 'from scratch'. The author is talking about ideas not about code.

So even developers who can build things from scratch use frameworks when needed.

huuu··on Discovery of a new irregular pentagon that can cover the plane
Of course not. I'm just curious about the possibilities.
huuu··on Discovery of a new irregular pentagon that can cover the plane
Besides tiling your bathroom is there any use case for this? Or is this pure for fun and gaining knowledge?

Edit: The article is talking about building structures but isn't a triangle the most rigid form? And triangles are already used in building.

huuu··on Disney's Hyperion Renderer
Ray tracing is the art of tracing rays and detecting collision.

Ray tracing is used in photon mapping and path tracing.

With photon mapping you trace a ray from a light source and store the light energy for the area where the light hits an object.

With path tracing you ray trace a ray from the camera and every time you hit an object you check if you can see a light source from that spot. If true you return all the gathered energy back to the camera (pixel).

huuu··on The strange phenomenon of musical frisson
"..heady emotional cocktail.."

When I experience this I feel like I choke or have to vomit. And I don't think it has to do with music (alone) but with the cocktail of emotions. Music will trigger all kinds of emotion so it is very likely you will experience a skin orgasm while listening to music. But for example seeing something beautiful can also trigger this.

I like to think of it as a kind of short circuit of emotions. Too much to handle.

huuu··on Paperclip Machine
I think it is. The distande between the folding parts on the wheel account for the lenght of each straight part.
huuu··on Paperclip Machine
Fun 'fact': it is estimated that less than 2% of all paperclips is used to hold papers together.
huuu··on New Horizons: Nasa spacecraft speeds past Pluto
It seems Pluto has much less craters than our moon. Is this because our moon is much closer to a heavy body which attracts all kinds of objects?

Anyway: wow! The quality of this preview is already amazing. Waiting for the high res version :)
