haney··on Dolly Parton has died
She also had a program that gave a free book to elementary school kids every year (as a part of the local book fair). The first technical book I ever owned was a very basic intro to html that I received as a part of that program.
haney··on Dolly Parton has died
As a kid growing up in Tennessee I was the beneficiary of several of her reading programs. They really helped to foster a sense of curiosity and wonder that live with me to this day. Dolly was a real one, she'll definitely be missed.
haney··on Atlassian announces end of support for Opsgenie
It's wild to me that they would acquire a company for $295m and then shut it down six years later. I'd be really curious to know if this is a failed acquisition or if they think they'll be able to retain previous ops genie customers on their new products.
haney··on Ask HN: Escaping Difficult Employment Situation?
First off, it sounds like you’re going through a lot and human to human I want to acknowledge how hard that is. I’d suggest trying to talk to someone to help you heal and overcome the things that you’ve been coping with. When I’ve worked stressful jobs I’ve found exercise to be really helpful. Lastly, just remember that while you need your job economically you’ve already decided to leave, so as much as possible try to not take any of the actions of others personally. If you can put some mental space between your work and yourself it might help you to keep enough energy to focus on a search for something more fulfilling.

There are great teams out there, it does take a lot of work to find them but it is possible to find something fulfilling. Take care of yourself enough during this time so you have the energy to go find something better. I’d encourage you to get started.

haney··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2024)
Invisible | Remote (EST +/- 6) | Full Time | https://www.invisible.co/technology-careers/ Invisible builds a platform for Operations to run Business Processes. We stand at the intersection of humans and machines building scalable, repeatable processes for business using a combination of automation and humans in the loop. We've built an in house platform that handles the execution of these processes (think Zapier or IFFT that combines automations and human agents) and are solving interesting problems on teams ranging from Infra (Kubernetes, GCP) to UI (Python, Django, Typescript, React, Next.js). We're currently hiring across multiple teams from Junior to Principle level and including Engineering Managers and Directors.

haney··on Migrating our backend from Vercel to Fly.io
I joined a project that was fully deployed on Vercel. We routinely ran into issues with limitations, outages and sharp edges. Our junior devs had also taken advantage of Vercel specific features (I remember a Vercel specific request object in the code specifically).

Given all the problems and the vendor lock in from tight coupling I advise everyone I discuss Vercel with to avoid them like the plague.

haney··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
I’m willing to admit that poor usage can make any tool a problem. But, tRPC is set up to make it easy to directly expose your backend for use in a component. For new projects that’s fantastic, for larger projects and teams having the ‘friction’ of defining a gRPC, GraphQL or REST endpoint is leading to more thoughtful API design and ability to keep isolation between layers.
haney··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
If you only ever use Typescript and are sure you’ll never need to interact with the code in any other language or service in a different repo it’s fine. But as soon as you need to reuse that backend for anything else you’re stuck building something new.
haney··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
I'm currently in the process of removing tRPC from our codebase. It's been a nightmare of tight coupling. I've also found that it encourages more junior developers to not think about interfaces / data access patterns (there's a mapping from Prisma straight through to the component). It's fantastic for rapid prototyping but really paints you into a corner if you ever want to decouple the codebase.
haney··on People paid to train AI are outsourcing their work to AI
The company that I work at does exactly the service that you're describing. We recently spun up a team of Math PhDs to help with data labeling. (https://www.invisible.co/). We're seeing more and more of our clients ask for graduate level data labelers and content creators.
haney··on Apple busts iOS 17 leaker with spycraft ‘canary trap’
Can anyone recommend a book or resource for an introduction to spy craft? I’m sure there are more approaches like ‘canary traps’ that would be useful mechanisms to understand.
haney··on Coinbase’s chief product officer will leave with a $105M payday
I think it's time for me transition into a product role...
haney··on Gptcommit: Never write a commit message again (with the help of GPT-3)
This is interesting but I’d hate to work on a project where this was used. Commits should tell me why a change happened not just what code changed.
haney··on Write admin tools from day one (2022)
Built in admin is the killer feature that keeps me coming back to Django over and over.
haney··on Ask HN: What's your favorite technical paper?
I read The Dynamo paper [1] early in my career and its use of consistent hashing inspired me to use similar approaches in systems I've developed.

haney··on Washington Post is working on its own Mastodon instance
I believe OP's point was that historically journalism organizations have had a positive impact on open source tools. Not that they are directly related.
haney··on An Extraordinarily Hostile Move: New School Threatens to Withhold Pay in Strike
I thought the same thing. Are there examples of companies that paid workers while they're striking? Do I just not know how strikes normally work?
haney··on Remote work is gutting downtowns
The article mentions Facebook closing two of their smaller offices without mentioning that 770 is still the same size and that they’re getting ready to move into the largest office they’re ever had in the city near Penn Station.
haney··on Improving code review time
A change you made moved some metric a measurable amount (usually aligned with a team or product goal).

You put these little nuggets of impact on your performance review.

haney··on Meta Is Preparing to Notify Employees of Large-Scale Layoffs This Week
It could be a total coincidence, could be designed to take advantage of a news cycle that's already full, could be that it has taken them this long to put a plan together since their stock started dropping. If your theory is that there's a political motivation there are a couple of simpler explanations before we jump to that conclusion.
haney··on Ask HN: Strategies to land remote US job while living in living in EU?
The engineering team at Invisible Technologies hires globally and pays above that salary range you listed (we’re US based)

We’d love to talk to you, you can either apply here https://www.invisible.co/invisible-engineering or email me personally (my email is my HN username @invisible.co)

haney··on Why you might want a domain-specific database like TigerBeetleDB
It’s kind of coming from the opposite direction, but it feels like Postgres extensions solve many of the needs you’re describing. They allow a developer to use the underlying database engine while extending it to include domain specific primitives.
haney··on Python Language Summit: Python Without the GIL
Until now attempts to remove the GIL have come at the cost of reduced single threaded performance.

This is the first suggestion that doesn’t degrade single threaded performance.

haney··on Ask HN: Good books on managing a hybrid/remote team?
I liked "The Long Distance Leader" by Kevin Eikenberry. It had several tactical tricks related to communication medium that I found useful.
haney··on Ask HN: Are CO salary disclosure laws affecting remote work opportunities?
Pretty sure most FAANG companies don't list salaries on their open positions. You can find that info through 3rd party sources like Levels.fyi though.
