haney··on Postgres full-text search is good enough
Huh, one of the senior engineers at a previous employer turned me on to it. I completely missed that it was built in now, I feel kind of silly now.
haney··on Postgres full-text search is good enough
I've used tsearch2 on several projects and it's always been super handy. It's much easier than adding another dependency just to support search.
haney··on Endaga – Community Cellular Networks
Very cool, I couldn't find pricing, does anyone have any idea what a product like this would sell for?
haney··on Bellhops raises $6m to take on the moving industry
Hey Everyone,

I'm Adam the CTO at Bellhops. We're really excited to be working with the Binary guys, they've already been incredibly helpful as mentors over the last few weeks. We're really excited for the future of the company.

haney··on ChartSQL: Create Charts and Dashboards from SQL
This is pretty amazing. My team just started using Chart.io because we couldn't find an easy way to turn data in our relational database into charts. Chart.io is pretty great, but there are several other very expensive BI tools that don't offer much more value than this tool provides. Great job.
haney··on The Future of NoSQL
While I understand the initial appeal of schemaless databases in my experience the schema is the best living documentation of the shape of the data. It becomes really handy to decouple this from the application layer when you start having multiple clients connecting to the database (transactional vs analytics workloads). I've also had my fair share of seemingly non deterministic behavior when working well tested code hits old data that you forgot was in a slightly different format.
haney··on Optaplanner: Red Hat's Business Resource Optimizer
Does anyone know of a similar library in Python?
haney··on Why a Tennessee town has the fastest internet
We're looking for developers in Chattanooga (I'm a UT alum who moved to Chattanooga to start a company). I'd love to talk to you more about the developer community in Chattanooga, and the growth I've seen over the last 3 years. Hit me up @adamhaney or firstname dot lastname at getbellhops.com. We're not the valley here in Chattanooga but you definitely don't have to go west to find cool companies working on cutting edge tech.
haney··on Python 3 is killing Python
It has definitely been a painful process to port from python 2 to 3. We have one developer who has been pushing hard for this, and while it may not be a defensible business position we believe it's the right thing as members of the community.

There are some nontrivial improvements in Python 3 (async) that we want, but more than that we don't want python to split and languish. We think that by taking a step into python 3 (and porting our remaining dependencies) we can make a small dent.

haney··on Bellhops is hiring our 5th developer
We'd prefer in office but we'd consider remote work. Shoot as an email at geekhr@getbellhops.com and we'll see if we can work something out.
haney··on Ask HN: Please tell us how you started a project in PHP and are sorry for this.
I spent a few years freelancing as a PHP developer and then transitioned into python for the last 3. It's fairly easy to transition between PHP/Python/Ruby and I'd suggest getting a little bit familiar with similar languages. I know that knowing a bit of all three has led me to be able to develop more quickly and cleanly. Also, more diversity in your understanding would help with your job security concerns.
haney··on Launching HealthCare.gov (2013)
yep
haney··on Show HN: Ridiculously cheap bulk geocoding
I would imagine what you're talking about is a violation of their terms of service.
haney··on Ask HN: How can you make a MacBookPro keyboard productive for programming?
There are keyboard shortcuts for much of this behavior:

ctrl+a goes to the beginning of a line ctrl+e goes to the end ctrl+k deletes a line

haney··on Use Project-based Interviews Instead of “GitHub”
If AT ALL possible I prefer to contract developers. We pay a candidate for their time and pair program with them for a week. This lets us evaluate not only their ability to code but also their desire to learn and their team culture fit. Since I've started doing this with a new team it's been a lot easier to manage the people that I work with. All the existing developers get to know someone and they all get veto power over whether its someone that they'd want to work with AFTER they're worked with them.
haney··on Heroku Postgres 2.0
I really want a better explanation of how 'rollback' works. You have to create a fork before you run your migration script so you can roll back to that fork?
haney··on Try Hy
I hadn't thought about the duck typing issue. What I have in my mind is more akin to contract programming. I'd love to take a look at a library that does this. I just hacked something together during my layover to give it a try.
haney··on Try Hy
For clarity it's generating a python AST which is an object in python. So it's doing a bit more than just raw syntactic sugar.
haney··on Try Hy
I've had similar ideas. I really like the batteries that are included with python but I would like to be able to add type annotations that are enforced to my code base for type safety.

I also really like the idea of being able to extend the language with macros. Hy certainly seems like a good start towards a language like this.

haney··on Django plugins you shouldn't start without
I couldn't agree more.
haney··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2013)

haney··on Campus Bellhops is hiring hackers
We're also offering a $500 finders fee for any referrals that lead to a hire, so if anyone has a friend that's interested in a web development position please send them our way and we'll pay you back in kind.
haney··on Ask HN: Best ways to learn new stuff?
I just attempt to remain passionately curious. If I don't know something I read about it on Wikipedia, if it still doesn't make sense I search Amazon and order a book. I've learned things about Sociology, Politics, Corporate Finance, Theoretical Computer Science and Parkour this way. We live in a really interesting world, try to understand how everything you come in contact with works (on some level).
haney··on Ask HN: What exception tracking service do you use?
New Relic is a god sent.
haney··on Recruiting Strategy: 100% Bonus Over 10 Years
That was the first thing that sprang to mind for me too. You don't always get a referral right. I've had wonderful friends who have made lousy coworkers, if I was even more incentivized to protect them I think you'd see a pretty stagnant workforce develop over time.
haney··on Ask HN: I'm in NYC, any one wanna grab coffee / beer?
That might require a bit of a commute.
haney··on Can anyone explain why Ruby is so popular?
For #1 everything I've seen points to rails and Django having a nearly 1 to 1 correspondence. It's just preference for the most part.
haney··on Ditch Your $2500 Rent And Come Climb The Best Rocks In The World
> probably sums up the Chattanooga, TN viewpoint pretty well. "People with other points of view don't know anything about the things we like the most here."

I think your comment pretty much sums up the California viewpoint, "Someone in Chattanooga said something, now I feel like I can classify everyone there".

haney··on Ditch Your $2500 Rent And Come Climb The Best Rocks In The World
Out of curiosity what was the most shocking part of your experience in Atlanta?
haney··on Ditch Your $2500 Rent And Come Climb The Best Rocks In The World
I'm sitting in downtown Chattanooga and I'm walking distance to 3 vegetarian restaurants, a whole foods, and a local grocery story with food from local farms, not to mention the numerous farmers markets and open air markets that are around on the weekends.

I'm so tired of the negative view of the south. Believe it or not we wear shoes, and you can have good food and entertainment here.
