grozzle··on Japan to invest on nuclear energy in major policy shift
Media hyperbole and shrieking fear-mongering should carry most of those hundreds of the evacuation's death toll. The panic and stress were fatal. A smaller, slower, calmer reaction was what the region needed.

Even to this day, Fukushima-ken agricultural producers can't compete fairly on their quality, due to the lingering stigma with a half-life longer than any detectable isotope.

These lasting effects of hysteria are vastly worse for the health, prosperity, and wellbeing of the region than the actual becquerels released 11 years ago.

grozzle··on Edge2 Rockchip RK3588S ARM PC with 6 Tops NPU and 8K Display
$200 is generally much more than the total cost of these Rockchip boards.

(This Khadas product is an usually expensive option.)

Counterexamples can disprove an absolute law, but the topic here is a causal tendency, there are of course some exceptions.
grozzle··on libtmux: Python API / Wrapper for tmux
Am I wrong to think that my Python should be interacting with remote systems via APIs, not via CLIs?
grozzle··on Ask HN: Advice on camera for black and white only photography?
Orange or yellow filters.

They bring up brightness in skin tones, and add contrast to blue skies and green vegetation.

Orange and yellow filters are available at many secondhand stores for a few bucks each, in common lens diameters.

You can also just do the same effect in post-production if you shoot in colour digitally. I sincerely advise you to just shoot b&w film for b&w photos, but these days there are good software conversions - "film simulations", available in lots of different apps if you prefer to shoot digitally. It's a mature technology already, there aren't really any "bad options" you need to avoid.

grozzle··on Actually, Maybe Don’t Learn to Code
It's the work placement promised at the end of the course that sometimes tempts me to do one.

The value is in helping get the first foot into the door, which is a totally different skill than programming itself. A course with a good relationship with some decent IT companies could be good value for someone who doesn't already have contacts in the industry.

grozzle··on Ethereum mining is going away, and miners are not happy
The ramp up and down is more important than cumulative heat exposure for solid state components, but not for moving parts in the cooling system, and also electrolytic capacitors age much faster in a hot environment.

sic is used to highlight that a spelling or grammar mistake in your writing is part of a direct quote being provided unaltered, and not your own mistake. It isn't used to provide corrections. Anyway, both spellings are fine in various regions.
grozzle··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
The Answer, the thing that Helps, might be just around the next click.

I know, rationally, what I have to do, but the part of myself with all the neurotransmitters is convinced there must be an easier way, and it'd be more efficient to keep looking for it.

grozzle··on Two-inch diamond wafers could store a billion Blu-ray's worth of data
SSDs are very near the price of magnetic discs? Near as dammit for a one-off consumer purchase. They're still behind at higher consumer ranges like over a terabyte, but for most of the market... are you posting from several years ago?

I can't find that previous entry in the edit history, and the talk page history just has one question about Dolan's jq. Where can I see the background you're talking about?
grozzle··on Ask HN: What's a simple easy way to chat online with someone professionally?
I use nine active email addresses for various contexts. Some have all or part of my real name, some don't. The Gmail app can add accounts from various non-Gmail platforms, and still aggregate them all together. Sometimes I've made a new Gmail account just for more free Drive storage, when I used to host some of my music collection there and stream to my phone, before I made my home storage accessible via duckdns.

Just make a new account for this situation. There are myriad free or low-cost email providers. This is a trivially easy solution.

What they're doing is working on Nebula.app

Where the creators themselves have strong say in the platform policies and the recommendations system is much simpler and more transparent. Money comes from subscribers, not ads. (sponsor segments seem to still be allowed)

grozzle··on Photographer’s 3,200 Undeveloped Film Rolls Hold History of Rock ‘N’ Roll
Was thinking the same thing. Any time I've found old exposed film it hasn't come out well, if at all. The article says that only a small minority was kept in a fridge, and doesn't mention a freezer.

One hot summer can totally ruin the latent image. However it also mentions that he's working with a lab that specialises in old expired film.

grozzle··on The magic of the Japanese convenience store sandwich
eh. Seem on a par, to me. per jnsie's comment elsewhere on this page, perhaps it's just England / the mainland that has bad ones, they're good north and south of the border in Ireland.
grozzle··on The magic of the Japanese convenience store sandwich
I don't think Japanese convenience store sandwiches are that much better than those from Spar, Mace, Tesco, Boots etc in the UK and Ireland, so I have to wonder how bad things are back home for the presumably American intended audience when all these kinds of articles invariably start with something about how shocking it is to even contemplate eating 7-11 food.

(Also a bit out of date, the tax is now 10% and must be included in the price printed on the product or shelf.)

I generally think of obtrusive cookie consent popups as a kind of #maliciouscompliance revenge from villains who are sore about GDPR protections.
grozzle··on The campaign to shut down YouTube-dl continues
I can also pay YouTube $0 a month and never see an ad again.

I do pay money for Nebula, because they seem like their hearts are in the right place. I pay about $60, 70 a month to various podcast and video creators directly.

I don't use adblock, vanced, and sponsorblock because I'm cheap. It's because I don't like what YouTube as a whole is doing with incentivising clickbait and maximising revenue above just being an unobtrusive platform.

I whitelist Alec at Technology Connections, Steve Mould, a couple of others, from the ad blocks, because they aren't on Nebula yet. They should be.

grozzle··on A quick breakdown of what SWIFT is and why it matters
A notable anecdote is the Northern Bank robbery of 2004, when (presumably IRA) robbers stole 26 million UK pounds from the biggest Belfast branch of the Northern Bank, which, like other private banks in Northern Ireland and Scotland, issued its own banknotes. They held a manager's family at gunpoint during the action.

This total sum seemed to be far beyond the robbers' actual intentions, and the Northern Bank quickly issued a new banknote design, offering free exchanges for anyone with the old one.

Of course the robbed money had serial numbers, so it's now generally believed the IRA just burned most of the stolen cash.

grozzle··on An Introduction to Rational Trigonometry and Chromogeometry
This "rational" mathematics seems to just be an elaborate set of extra rules to avoid using repeating decimals and transcendental numbers like pi and e.

what's the point? is it just an academic exercise to play maths on hard mode, to see how far you can get without using certain tools?

grozzle··on A look inside the chips that powered the landmark Polaroid SX-70 instant camera
Not sure if I'm mis-reading this a surprised reaction, but if so, using light reflected from the film inside the camera body _is_ the standard TTL technology.

grozzle··on Bottles: GUI front end to run Windows software on Linux
no-one here said the olden days were better. it is possible for something to be generally in the right direction, but still in great need of improvements. dismissing anything not as positive as you'd like as unconstructive is itself unconstructive.
grozzle··on Cultures where men and women don’t speak the same language (2017)
Too late to the party with just that resource. Engines that most efficiently use oil came about only after the era of history when engines that need coal were dominant.

Fun bit of alt-history pondering - China was the most powerful single nation on Earth at the time of the dawn of the industrial revolution - it's quite plausible that they missed out on that lead just because of a couple of shallow whitewater sections of the Yangtze river that made bringing their coal by barge to the coastal cities impractical.

grozzle··on “We removed the RSS feed since this technology became obsolete”
The whole (non-Spotify, ugh) podcast ecosystem would like a word about RSS being obsolete.

Patreon (and to a greater extent, the podcasters I support) keep making real money out of me and millions of others every month for personalised RSS feeds for content. That RSS feed is the delivery vehicle. It's very reliable, I can use it in any app, much good, so benefit, wow.

grozzle··on “We removed the RSS feed since this technology became obsolete”
The belt drive of the laser in an optical reader, and to some extent the servo motors actuating hard drive heads, were the direct successors that obsoleted the VHS rewinder. The wide data bus providing random access to persistent solid state memory has already obsoleted one and is nearly done with the other.
grozzle··on Cultures where men and women don’t speak the same language (2017)
Indeed. English is as dominant in the world as it is today probably because England and the USA have (or had) plenty of shallow coal, iron, and (relevant after the "special relationship") oil deposits, not because of any particular linguistic efficiency.
grozzle··on Cultures where men and women don’t speak the same language (2017)
True. Irish in its heyday had four rather different dialects, but today only the artificial compromise "fifth province" amalgam is taught in schools.

Same with Japanese. There are some proudly, stubbornly distinct phrases in Kansai-ben and other regions, but the choice of the Meiji-era government to only teach Standard Tokyo Japanese in schools has had the desired homogenising effect.

Even as recently as the 1940s, there are well-documented cases of teens from the south of England, sent to the north of England, to work in mines for the war effort, who simply could not understand the variety of English being spoken around them. Radio and TV smoothed out all those differences.

grozzle··on The "five whys" productivity technique
I joined a trade union, we're always doing lots of really valuable work, helping people who need help. I'm the union's IT officer now, daily work is just managing email lists and arguing with MS 365, ongoing projects are updating our website and dues payment system. Doing this work helps our activists, organisers, and retained lawyers do their extremely valuable work. I'm not paid, I do it in spare time around an unrelated full-time job. I feel good about it. If you've got any useful skills, or just some free time, you can support anyone you see out in the world doing good.

(I'm also from a farming and farm-vet family) Don't forget about the 98% of male calves and 99% of male chicks.

No matter how comfortable, even luxurious, a free-range eggs farm might be - all those hens' brothers were put in a shredder when they were newborns.

Examine the whole system, not the the visibly "best" parts.
