glawre··on Ask HN: What would happen if your company stopped using all AI tomorrow?
It uses 50 words when 10 would do.
glawre··on Ask HN: What technique do you use to make Claude Code deterministic?
I get Claude to write code and tests and then I review these carefully. I'm not doing any cutting edge SWE work, so this works fine for me. I also enjoy the bonus that once written it's deterministic, costs no tokens, and is no longer coupled to the AI provider or the government where they operate.
glawre··on The team behind a pro-Iran, Lego-themed viral-video campaign
Don't forget Trump rubbing shoulders with al-Sharaa either.
glawre··on UK Orders Ofcom to Explore Encryption Backdoors
What are Ofcom realistically going to do when providers refuse to comply?

We've seen the X/CSAM issue this week and both the government and regulator are clearly unwilling to stand up to American big-tech.

glawre··on More dynamic cronjobs
At our company we have enough systems reliant on holiday dates that we have a Holiday system that emits events when there are changes.

This happens surprisingly often, given that religious dates change and there are holidays/closures for storms in some regions.

glawre··on MongoDB warns admins to patch RCE flaw immediately
The relevant CVE is here: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2025-14847, with a CVSS of 8.7.
glawre··on What's your "coworker didn't lock screen" procedure?
Back when I worked at a consulting and MSP place this was taken pretty seriously as it violated some kind of standards we’d signed ourselves up to. Security would also happily pickup your laptop and take it away if it wasn’t Kensington locked to the desk.
glawre··on Amazon Turned Drivers into First Responders in Europe Experiment
It's not just the batteries that need regular servicing, the pads do too. They expire on a similar timescale to the batteries but most AEDs don't alarm for expired pads.

It's not uncommon for AEDs to also need firmware updates, although this typically doesn't effect the usability of the device.

glawre··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
He claimed, incorrectly, that people who live near abortion "buffer zones" in Scotland were sent letters by the government warning them about praying privately within their own homes. This was nonsense.
glawre··on Arsenal FC AI Research Engineer job posting
What are you defining as a BigCo? In the UK I can only really think of FAANG, a small number of hedge funds / HFT firms, and more recently some AI firms that are paying that level of salary.

I'm also guessing that salaries in football might be suppressed similar to video games jobs. There'll be a lot of people willing to work under market rate because they enjoy the football environment.

glawre··on Ask HN: I'm a dev who never wants to be on call again. What are my best options?
I'd aim for a giant bank / financial services company. Some still mandate dedicated Ops/Prod Support teams. It can definitely have it's drawbacks, but you're very unlikely to ever be called out.
glawre··on A camera-less iPhone issued to my buddy that works at a nuclear plant
This is quite a common policy in safety critical industries. I consulted at a large oil company a few years ago and they had a similar attitude in their head offices.
glawre··on Effect of passenger position on crash injury risk in aircraft (2015) [pdf]
This reminds me of the “Plane Crash” documentary where a 727 was crashed into a desert in Mexico. Definitely worth a watch for any aviation enthusiasts: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Boeing_727_crash_experi...
glawre··on Ask HN: Guidelines for making clear architecture diagrams
I like the C4 Model as a guide on the different levels of abstraction that you might need for your system.
glawre··on 9/11 in Realtime
Do you have a source for the Nanog powerpoint? That sounds really interesting.
glawre··on Ask HN: What's the longest uptime you have for a server?
Early in my career I definitely worked with a few systems that had 5+ years uptime. I was always particularly impressed by mainframe / NonStop architectures.

These days I'd much rather have my VMs rebuilt nightly than chase a long uptime badge of honour.

glawre··on Ask HN: How to get better at architecture diagrams
I've found the C4 Model to be a good starting point to create diagrams with an appropriate level of abstraction: https://c4model.com/ .
glawre··on Tell HN: IBM and SAP are cutting thousands of jobs
I worked at IBM for too many years. This is nothing new. Their MO around 2010-2015 was to do quarterly reductions in order to minimize the press interest.

In the UK the redundancy lists were often based on completely inaccurate "employee job codes". These were seemingly set when you joined the company and there was no process to review or update your code. At one stage I was on the redunancy list despite working in a 'Strategic' area. I only managed to dodge it after my Exec/Partner lobbied for someone to see sense.

glawre··on Ask HN: Which mailing lists would you recommend to subscribe to?
Matt Levine's Money Stuff: https://www.bloomberg.com/account/newsletters/money-stuff
glawre··on Citibank can close your account and hold your money for 30-60 days without cause
This has Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) written all over it. This applies to every financial institution in the US, UK, and most other countries too I imagine.

In the UK, an individual can be prosecuted for “tipping off” someone about a SAR. I assume something similar exists in the US. This is why the banks respond with absolutely minimal communication.

glawre··on DJI Drone Flies over the Top of Mount Everest
Regarding question 3, this would have been shot during the Spring climbing season. This year had an unusually long period of calm weather, which allowed the ~250 climbers and ~600 Sherpas to summit over the course of 12 days.

The vast majority of climbers ascend from the southeast route (from Nepal), with a smaller number ascending from the northeast (Tibetan) route. I can't tell for sure which direction the drone is flying in, but some clever piloting may have helped here.

glawre··on Ask HN: Does it matter if development team members have the camera off?
I recently moved from an org where most people (90%+)used their camera for meetings to an org where 99% of meetings are using an audio teleconf system.

As a new joiner I’ve found it much harder to build relationships over audio only, especially with peers who are remote. This may just be a personal flaw that I have.

I have definitely noticed that the audio calls are more prone to people interrupting and talking over each other. This is often eliminated on video calls because you can see visual cues that someone would like to speak, or that someone is thinking about the question prior to responding. Video is a much higher bandwidth medium for collaboration, imo.

Personally I’d prefer meetings to be video first.

glawre··on Ask HN: What's an insanely competitive job for a software engineer?
Front Office financial technology roles spring to mind.
glawre··on France offers each cyclist €50 for bike repairs once lockdown ends
In the UK this is not the case. Anyone can be photographed in a public place.
glawre··on Ask HN: Has MyFitnessPal sold customer data to Netflix?
My initial thought was that it could be related to the leak, however my email doesn't exist in HIBP.

You're absolutely correct - someone - not me - has created an account using this unique email address.
