genericuser··on Patent office whistleblower: ‘Managers have no idea when employees are working’
Many people here seem to be taking these type of expectations that people work for their contracted amount of time almost personally. Not appreciating that if the person is 'sharp as shit' then their hourly rate if they are a contractor, or their salary reflects that and they are still expected to be doing work during all hours, because these are jobs where the work is never done, its a never ending heap which only grows.

It is a shame some people in jobs where they are compensated for their talent expect that they don't need to do achieve at the level of their talent for the amount of time they are being paid for.

genericuser··on Why You Shouldn't Ask Us to Sign Your NDA
"You added a client in the same space? Or their competitor?"

These are exactly the reasons they want, and are sometimes justified in wanting an NDA. It depends on the domain you are working in. But you are essentially saying you don't want to work in the domains where this is standard, if you say you won't sign a NDA regardless of the NDA contents before a project discussion.

My experience is generally the closer to the 'metal' the program is going to be running the more likely there will be a NDA before any details are really provided to you. And to me these can be extremely interesting areas to work in, for instance I would expect this to be the case with most avionics related companies.

genericuser··on What I use instead of Google services
Is there a good non-google alternative to Docs / Drive. I read the article hoping to find one, but didn't see any mention of one. Having a non-google version of a service which allows collaboration and modification of documents through a web browser, without additional software installed would be nice and I feel it must exist, but don't know where to look.

Anyone got a recommendation.

genericuser··on How the 'Kung Fu Fighting' Melody Came to Represent Asia
"Hail to the Chief" comes to mind as used for setting scenes in America in many movies. Usually scenes having to do with the character playing the president, but in a lot movies that is the main time they need to say 'hey this america people'
genericuser··on Don’t Want Me to Recline My Airline Seat? You Can Pay Me
Then they should take it up with the airline and not make my experience worse when I am dealing with the airline screwing me also.

By trying to tell the person in front of them not to recline they are effectively saying "I didn't get what I wanted so I am going to take it out on a person who may have"

genericuser··on Don’t Want Me to Recline My Airline Seat? You Can Pay Me
Maybe you should take your own needs into account when buying your ticket, and choose seats without reclining seats in front of them then. Such as those in the exit row, or those in the front row.

I won't book a ticket if I have to sit in front of the exit row, or in the last row on an aircraft. The idea that you should not have to factor in similar preferences when booking your flights strikes me as nothing more than entitlement.

genericuser··on [dead]
So sometimes you get a person who won't let you prioritize your comfort over theirs, and in those cases you push them up forcing them to accommodate you. You don't outline anytime where it is not a problem for you, or any time you let the other person recline.

Now maybe you just omitted these cases, but the way you are explaining it you sound like the unreasonable person who always has to have their way.

genericuser··on Don’t Want Me to Recline My Airline Seat? You Can Pay Me
How is expecting to be able to recline your seat on a flight when you chose a seat that does recline, remotely comparable to your example?

genericuser··on German armed forces warn that carbon fiber might be cancer-causing
Much like asbestos siding in that regard, where its not exactly being pumped into the air by most people, but people who work with it, for example sanding it, create a health hazard.
genericuser··on Ask HN: I was hired and unhired in 2 weeks, for no reason
It sounds like he was working for those two weeks he is receiving pay for. Not compensation for any troubles, but rather payment for work done.
genericuser··on Ask HN: I was hired and unhired in 2 weeks, for no reason
It is indeed in the best interests of nearly everyone to explicitly state the company that is acting in a undesirable manner.

Unfortunately it is not in that companies best interest for him to state it.

And because it is not in any companies best interest to have employees that when let go will put the common good above the good of the company, it is not in his best interest either to publicize the name of the company.

With that in mind, yes please do us the favor.

As someone engaging in a job search, I know it would be appreciated by the general population to receive this information.

genericuser··on Don't be a jerk
How would one provide an example of the general 'feel' of an environment? While everyone in support of it is using the subjective feeling that it has gotten worse, the only evidence for or against it would involve aggregating all posts over time and seeing how the various averages worked out.

Basically you are asking for evidence of a counter theory that has never been required of the prevailing one.

genericuser··on Questions about Nasa's space drive answered
I have never heard the quote with the middle section you included "to a laymen in a few paragraphs"

I have frequently heard the quote without that section, that section seems flawed in that a layman would need to have all the underlying concepts explained to them also, indicating that application of the quote would not scale, as more underlying concepts were necessary to include.

genericuser··on I'm a woman CEO and it doesn't change anything
People still often directly vocalize their sexism as such. Stating things like 'Its a good idea for a woman'. They probably don't often do it to the person who they are offending face but I have heard it about others and forwarded onto them in the past.

When people you trust inform you that the someone dismissed you for being a woman, then you can know pretty safely. You can keep defending your stance, although at this point I am dismissing you as a probable troll.

genericuser··on I'm a woman CEO and it doesn't change anything
Those are issues stemming from being a founder, and possibly your parents knowing your fall back plan either doesn't exist, or is to move back in with them.

Those are not issues stemming from your identity as a person. Other groups of people, in this case women, have issues where people are utterly dismissive simply because of their membership in that group.

The challenge this adds on top of normal founder challenges is orders of magnitude greater than any challenge added to founder challenges by being yet another white male founder.

Yeah I get that, I really didn't make my thoughts very clear. I get that you want to be happy again, and not play game gear again (or even a modern equivilant). Part of my thoughts that I didn't express was that an equivalent or the same thing to what made you happy then likely won't anymore.

I get the loneliness, despite having friends I don't feel close to any of them. I never felt lonely when I didn't have friends. In my case, having something I have nothing but apathy towards, only seems to serve as a reminder of that apathy.

Sounds like you are way ahead of me in the socializing thing though, my followers, friends, and connections account for very few people, if you are able to care about even one of them please consider yourself lucky, because I as a person who has never had to deal with the stigma of being deemed "abnormal" have no one I care about other than my self.

genericuser··on The Kids Who Beat Autism
I realize its a 'that guy' type thing to say but what you are describing sounds simply like the pains of growing up and realizing life involves doing a lot of shit you frankly don't want to do (based on a sample size of 1, with that 1 being me).

I was also a happy kid with no friends who tinkered with computers, now I am a reasonably social guy who will try his best to do as you do and obey the social norms I have spent the last 15 years or so trying to learn and master, but which I was blissfully unaware of when I was happy. And yes I will be miserable the whole time. I was never diagnosed with Asperger's though, although I was tested, I simply don't like people. I still miss a lot of social cues especially regarding hitting on people / people hitting on me. But I attribute that to the fact I didn't start trying to learn these things till I was 18 or so. My point is I can't go back to my childhood when I was happy, and I doubt you can either so try to move forward, and I wish you the best of luck finding a way to not be miserable, I know it's what I want for myself.

I also consider it to mean proper use of something. But figured it was just me ascribing extra meaning.

For instance, (assuming no context is provided) if someone said they utilized a fire extinguisher I would assume they meant to put out a fire. If they said they used a fire extinguisher, I would be wondering what they used it for (to propel an office chair , kill a mouse, cool their beer). Context of course almost always exists.

genericuser··on Count to ten when a plane goes down
I find it surprising that the exact key he fat fingered wasn't burned into his long term memory. Not that it would of been helpful to him down the line, actually the level of obsessing which would of taken place after the fact to remember it this many years later would of been quite counter productive.

It is simply that given the simplicity and consequences of the error, it is the type of thing I generally see people beating them selves up over until they can not forget it.

(In case you are saying to yourself but he did remember the key, look at the two versions in one he says F6 machine reboot F7 all reboot, and in the other he says F7 machine reboot F8 all reboot, indicating that while I hope he knew the keys functions then, he has since forgotten the exact key, or is substituting F keys for story telling purposes)

genericuser··on Microsoft Looks to Cut Up to 18,000 Jobs
Coincided with yes, but saying it was the result of is making a fault with logic as I am sure you are aware.
genericuser··on Show HN: Pangoly – Build your shiny new PC
It seems like a beautiful tool, however not having options to pick components I have a strong preference for such as Hitachi hard drives, and Silverstone cases for instance means I can't use it to build systems I might actually want to build ever.

I agree with other comments that if you want it to appeal to hobbyists you need a pretty massive build out of options.

genericuser··on At The Washington Post, Jeff Bezos has the paper thinking global domination
How is the information in newspapers currently preserved which is permanent and accessible (otherwise why archive at all) that a series of articles on the web could not also be preserved?

This is meant as an honest question as I remember microfiche and microfilm as the primary methods for preserving newspaper content. I assumed they were largely replaced with digital subscription based archives like lexus-nexus. And a digital archive can probably archive already digital information at least as easily as non-digital.

I know that libraries often keep physical newspapers like 5 or so years back but even after 5 years due to the quality of paper, ink, air, and occasional use. They are getting brittle and unable to be handled. News papers in their normal form were never intended to be permanent, hence why they were (are?) stored on microfilm or other archival methods.

genericuser··on Inside the libertarian version of Burning Man: Guns, booze and bitcoin
I cannot because I am under the impression that for the most part Libertarian philosophies haven't been implemented on a wide enough scale in any country to satisfy people who believe in them.

This may be part of the appeal to some people to see such a system attempted. And it is definitely a common reason used against such a system.

Ask yourself should we (as human beings) be against systems which have not been implemented yet? And if so how do new systems come into existence if we are?

genericuser··on When is the 11" Mac Book Air faster than a new Mac Pro?
Indeed it has changed since it was posted here.
genericuser··on Cardboard economics
The lenses were under a dollar each before off amazon before during Cardboards unveiling. While this does not mean you would be able to get them for that currently, it leads me to personally believe that if you bought in any sort of volume you could probably do much better than his $9 estimate.
genericuser··on When is the 11" Mac Book Air faster than a new Mac Pro?
Man it is almost like he got the title of his article wrong on purpose.
genericuser··on When is the 11" Mac Book Air faster than a new Mac Pro?
The article does not answer the question posed in the current title here of "When is the 11" Mac Book Air faster than a new Mac Pro?"

The article never even mentions a mac book air. It is basically just link bait.

Try and come up with a plausible reason you were looking at torrent sites, and that those torrent sites were porn. This is probably not possible, unless your job routinely involves downloading mysterious torrents.

So I guess try and be honest, and hope for the best, if you are lucky enough to encounter someone who finds honesty refreshing they may just suspend you or make you take a training course or something.

I would not try and frame someone else, although it could absolve you it could also quickly make your problems much worse. Also its a generally shitty thing to do.
