gandalfgreybeer··on Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton [pdf]
My adviser's PhD dissertation (PhD Physics) has Hopkins as one of her major references. This is grounded in Physics.
gandalfgreybeer··on Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton [pdf]
Two of my research advisers whose dissertations in PhD Physics had Hopfield as their primary reference. I'm also a PhD candidate working on one right now (no longer my primary reference because of all the developments) but I can trace several of my main references back to them.
gandalfgreybeer··on What excessive screen time does to the adult brain
>This reads like people spend and hour in bed looking at their phone before getting up... lol

This is very normal for a lot of people I know irl (at least those within my generation).

gandalfgreybeer··on The art of programming and why I won't use LLM
> an llm invented a novel solution to an important problem in programming.

This will likely not happen and is a horrible benchmark for productivity. The advantage of using LLMs as a partner for coding is that I myself will have more time to generate “novel solutions” since a lot of the low level stuff that I still need to write can be done in less than half the time.

I never trust it to write code I can’t write for myself and things I can’t make tests or verify.

It’s not about generating more lines of code but having more time to think of the more mentally demanding stuff. It’s like having a junior developer that can work really fast but I will still need to check what it does.

As a very personal benchmark, at work I know how much time it takes me to build repeating things from scratch that can’t be automated. By my estimate, having the LLM saves me around an hour or two of coding a day. That doesn’t replace my time but those 20-40 hours a month of time saved is worth the 20 bucks on average I pay for it.

Tldr; it won’t make anything novel but it gives me more time to make things that are

gandalfgreybeer··on Did you lose your AirPods?
That definitely isn’t normal. My guess is you need to clean the contacts in the AirPods. They might be in the case but it’s still pairing or trying to pair. Shouldn’t drain that much, especially overnight.
gandalfgreybeer··on What is the ideal chapter length? (2023)
Assuming all chapters are the same length, I think 10-20 is the sweet spot where I can randomly pick up the book
gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: Most accurate scientific book on human sleep?
Might be relevant but there was this old submission [1] debunking the facts behind "Why We Sleep"

gandalfgreybeer··on Introduction to Calvin and Hobbes: Sunday Pages 1985-1995 (2001)
I’ve replied to your other comment and I am replying again only after reading the other comments here, but I just realized here that I don’t think anyone is invalidating your experience of not liking it, but specifically reacting to the term cash grab.
gandalfgreybeer··on Introduction to Calvin and Hobbes: Sunday Pages 1985-1995 (2001)
I think what the person who replied to you is primarily reacting to is the term “cash grab”. And that is what I will focus on.

You yourself mentioned that Bill did not hype up anything about it, nor did you really counter with any arguments to prove that it was financially motivated.

I myself have not read it, but just because it was not what you expected or what the media portrayed it to be does not make it a “cash grab”.

gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: what are examples of successful "open-source alternatives"?
Having worked with both Python and matlab in both academic and professional settings, I don't think there's any project where I would pick matlab first unless my hand is forced

gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: Best way to remove CO2 in a bedroom?
While not directly related to CO2 removal, for air quality, especially if you live in an urban area, adding an air purifier is very useful.
gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: Best way to remove CO2 in a bedroom?
> a window is one of the best options.

Add a fan and it's hard to find something more optimal and cheap for this problem.

gandalfgreybeer··on Spaced repetition for teaching two-year olds how to read
I agree with you. It's up to the parents to figure out an environment where the kid will be okay in 10 years. Hard to argue for intentionally pulling someone back just to conform if there is nothing wrong with what they're doing.

(most) kids will learn how to interact with the rest of society at one point.

gandalfgreybeer··on Show HN: E-Paper 7-color display showing the current weather
Of these, only the first one actually has any real value. And as you've mentioned there are likely less "expensive" ways to do so. By expensive, I mean this is essentially using a sledgehammer to crack a nut (especially the Dall-E call).
gandalfgreybeer··on Show HN: E-Paper 7-color display showing the current weather
When I look at the weather app, I don't need to know what the weather is now but what the weather will most likely be later when I'm outside.
gandalfgreybeer··on Shopify is acquiring the Threads team
The fact that that disclaimer is on the login page itself sounds really problematic.
gandalfgreybeer··on macOS Sonoma silently enabled iCloud Keychain despite my precautions
I have the exact same experience as you. I usually take comments like this with a grain of salt, especially if it’s a very general and non-specific complaint.
gandalfgreybeer··on Turn Your iPhone into a Dumb Phone
This also applies to Apple's focus modes which he was mentioning.
gandalfgreybeer··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
I made that connection but never really thought it was the same. I just thought it was very close

> Meanwhile they aren't that good at logic This statement is contentious; depends on what level of abstraction you're looking at.

> Extremely polite and deferential This is a setting that can be turned off btw.

gandalfgreybeer··on New iPad Pro with M4 chip and Apple Pencil Pro
As a physicist, the main reason why I chose the Pro version is the refresh rate. It doesn’t distract me when I’m using the pencil.

Also the keyboard when I need to quickly ssh into something and I didn’t bring my laptop. (Not sure if there are non-pro iPads that support them now)

gandalfgreybeer··on New iPad Pro with M4 chip and Apple Pencil Pro
> I have an ipad that is barely five years old and no longer receives OS updates. You can't even install apps on it (like Netflix, or Youtube) because the OS is "unsupported."

I’m currentLy using a 2016 iPad Pro (so 8 years running) and I use it for both Netflix and YouTube. It’s also still getting updates. Next year will be the first where it seems to have security updates only as well.

Edit: I also just booted up an even older iPhone 5 and both apps work

gandalfgreybeer··on I Lost Faith in Kagi
Very tangential but your description is exactly why I've dropped most streaming services except for the Criterion Channel.
gandalfgreybeer··on I Lost Faith in Kagi
>Another thing you don't quite seen in real life: strangers that record a serendipitous conversation, to later post it for the whole world to see, to point and laugh.

In the thread linked above, I think his reasoning for posting the email is reasonable. I find this similar to what the Apollo dev did when discussing with Reddit people. If he didn't record the conversation or make it public, his words could have been twisted.

gandalfgreybeer··on Andrew Ng Appointed to Amazon's Board of Directors
As someone who knows Andrew Ng for his AI/ML work but not familiar with the inner workings of Silicon Valley, is there anything more to this other than sort of "strengthening" Amazon's strategic direction in that field or adding credibility?
gandalfgreybeer··on Create More, Consume Less (2021)
I think you're looking at "consumption" that is directly related to something productive. When one reads code, it goes towards writing (and all other examples you showed); that is essentially productive

However, what if I spend more time on Instagram and Twitter (consuming that won't lead to creating) over writing code. What if I spend more hours watching cat videos on Youtube over actually learning or making something?

Consumption in this context are what I'd call "empty calorie" consumption

gandalfgreybeer··on Vision Pro Teardown – Why those fake eyes look so weird
Thanks for sharing. Now I really want one despite knowing all the limitations and problems. It always looked so dystopian to me but for some reason I just want to play with it.
gandalfgreybeer··on Tell HN: Google-Wide Layoffs
I don’t see how it’s anything that’s not at least a positive gesture. You can have problems with the capitalist system as a whole but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what he wrote. It’s better than nothing.

I lost my job when my company closed a few years ago in the middle of the pandemic and I am very appreciative of those who reached out. That limbo of uncertainty even if I could survive for years with what I had didn’t feel nice.

gandalfgreybeer··on Super Mario 64 on the Web
I play with my Switch once every few months and have not encountered anything close to what he described so it’s probably longer. Honestly, I play more often on my switch over PC since it’s just easier to pick up and drop.
