gandalfgreybeer··on Reasons robotics is hard
Sometimes, I wonder why we even need humanoid robots for some tasks. For example, we had that robot over the past year that would wash the dishes...would be more efficient if it had 8 arms for that job. Or if I wanted it to clean my room, an arm that can extend up to the ceiling.

gandalfgreybeer··on Identity verification on Claude
Restricting access to US-only when the training dataset is from data of people around the world and data centers are not all US-only is something that's making me consider not supporting Anthropic.
gandalfgreybeer··on I quit drinking for a year
Based from my experience, stopping drinking didn't have noticeable effects as well. However, whenever I would drink once in a blue moon socially, it feels even worse than what I remember. I think it just felt normal before.
gandalfgreybeer··on The death of social media is the renaissance of RSS (2025)
> I fail to see how RSS helps filter out AI slop.

Not sure if I'm missing something, but for AI slop to get into your RSS feed, you have to be following something with slop which can easily be unfollowed; this is unlike algorithmically driven recommendations where there is no direct filter from your end.

gandalfgreybeer··on MacBook Neo
> dead on arrival for anyone doing real work

Honestly, we’re not the target market for this. I’m pretty sure at this price point though, it will sell like hotcakes. Once people get slightly into the ecosystem, it’s usually a big win for Apple since their stickiness ( from my experience of people around me) is undeniable once you get one product

gandalfgreybeer··on I migrated to an almost all-EU stack and saved 500€ per year
Understanding a perspective and agreeing with it aren’t the same thing. Herring’s point was about the ‘I don’t see why anyone would need this’ framing, not that the position itself is hard to grasp.
gandalfgreybeer··on I migrated to an almost all-EU stack and saved 500€ per year
Proton’s $4 a month is where I ended up landing a few years ago and it’s cheaper with the 2-year lock in they give every now and then. Sharing just in case it’s buried under unlimited. Although our usage may vary in case there are things in unlimited you need.

Thank you.
gandalfgreybeer··on Tinkering is a way to acquire good taste
In what’s becoming a monoculture world because of the internet, that seems like a good thing.
gandalfgreybeer··on Important machine learning equations
@dang, I think we need to start talking about letting AI slop get to the front page and how the community can help flag things as best as we can.
gandalfgreybeer··on Important machine learning equations
I stopped reading the post before that and went back to check. It's so blatant...especially when it mentions visualizations.

> With theoretical explanations, practical implementations, and visualizations, you now have a comprehensive resource to understand and apply ML math. Point anyone asking about core ML math here—they’ll learn 95% of what they need in one place!

gandalfgreybeer··on Important machine learning equations
As someone who tended to use "—" in a lot of my writing naturally before, the prevalence of its usage by LLMs frustrate me a lot. I now have to rewrite things that felt natural just so no one will think I'm an LLM.

gandalfgreybeer··on Xiaomi MiMo Reasoning Model
A lot of Xiaomi products have the prefix Mi. My initial guess is Mo is for model.

gandalfgreybeer··on Pope Francis has died
I don’t think anyone who would be ready to completely do a 180 with the Catholic Church will be the pope soon (or ever, given how the system works). He has, however, nudged that ship in the right direction and with what he has done and with his appointees. Let’s just hope it continues with whoever replaces him.
gandalfgreybeer··on Apple Invites
I prefer physical invites too, but in the context of this, physical printing sounds like a lot of unnecessary overhead and extra work that will yield little to no significant added value on the side of Apple.
gandalfgreybeer··on AI, but at What Cost? Breakdown of AI's Carbon Footprint
You are drowning in hypotheticals muddied by your own worldview. I can also say that there are 8 billion people on Earth. For most of them, green isn’t in their top 5 favorite colors.
gandalfgreybeer··on No more needles Tracking blood sugar on your wrist
As an engineer working in the field who has designed both cloud algorithms and on-firmware algorithms, when marketing uses AI, it tends to just be training/data fitting. At best, the most complicated ones tend to be random forests and if any use neural networks, it’s usually just overkill.

The answer to your last question is yes, especially when it’s from raw signals.

Tbf, there are applications from devices that do use deep learning methods but from experience they are not practical except on very edge cases.

gandalfgreybeer··on Apple Introduces M4 Pro and M4 Max
I doubt I'll upgrade anytime soon, but at this rate when I do need to, I feel like I'm just going to get a Max because of how happy I've been with the base M1 Pro (just upgraded the RAM a step).

That is if I don't just suddenly decide to replace the batteries (relatively cheap from the apple authorized store compared to a full upgrade).

gandalfgreybeer··on New Mac Mini with M4
> Running an Air Filter 24/7 has huge diminishing returns (i.e. waste of electricity). They are best run at max fan speed for short durations instead.

I did this experiment in two locations. If I’m in the more urban area, running the air filter 24/7 was necessary.

gandalfgreybeer··on New Mac Mini with M4
> They're comparing three generations back now?

My guess is the leap from intel to M1 was significant for an upgrade and M1 vs M2/M3 wasn’t really. I’m personally on an M1 and use it heavily but I don’t think I need the M4 jump still.

The mini hardware is appealing to me though.

gandalfgreybeer··on Kagi Update: AI Image Filter for Search Results
>searching for the often leads to the prompts I need to get a similar image from which I can iterate from.

how crazy are these images that you can't start with a prompt of your own?

gandalfgreybeer··on Why pay for a search engine
If you’re using chatGPT, you can add a prompt (I’ve set it in my rules) to “fact check from other websites” when I’m asking it things I’m not an expert in. It then provides some links which I then open up. I’ve found that to be a lot more efficient than searching from google straight up especially with very specific questions I sometimes query.

Half the websites it shows are those I wouldn’t have found on google and are relatively high signal for what I’m looking for (including very niche blogs from experts from the field).
