funnym0nk3y··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
How did we eliminate the opportunity for failure?
funnym0nk3y··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
I doubt that. Children learn by observing. And there are still more women than men in nurturing positions.
funnym0nk3y··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
I think you are right, but I think it is not the complete picture. There are several reasons I could think of:

- Dating: Men are, generally speaking, expected to make the first move, which creates pressure to perform.

- Work: Men are expected to provide for a family, which creates pressure to perform.

- Social backup: Because of all that pressure to ge ahead social structures inside male dominated circles are more competitive (which reduces support and adds pressure). But I might be wrong about that.

- Genetics and hormones: Men are, AFAIK, seen as the sex of the extremes. There are more high performing and low performing men than women.

Could be, and maybe that is also the reason for the emerging mental health crisis. Or it's the other way round. Nevertheless, if one asks: What was different say 50 to 75 years ago? Was it the smaller social reference group (you couldn't compare to the worlds elite in every single aspect of your life)? Was it the way of live laid out more clearly (you could get somewhere with a corporate job, own a house, etc.)? Or is there a more fundamental reason mental health is declining and thus more and more people are NEET?

But why aren't females withdrawing from society? What keeps them?
funnym0nk3y··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
I don't think the raw working hours matter. Do a job you love and it's much less of a burden compared to something you dread but do anyways because of social expectations.
funnym0nk3y··on How Japan is tackling a syndrome that creates recluses
It seems like this exact situation stands for much more: When failing a entrance exam and having a person tell you, that there is no point in living from now on drives you into such a despair, where you cut yourself from really basic needs like socializing then I think there is something fundamentally wrong. In my opinion this symbolizes an immense pressure to conform to standards of society, and at a smaller scale, standards of the closer social circle. If society displays little compassion for individual hardships and failures, does not show softness, it's soon to be overwhelmed by mental health issues.
funnym0nk3y··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
In my opinion the problems of sugar aren't that it's a carbohydrate (which are and should be the main energy source), it's in its metabolism: Sugar, especially without any fiber, jacks up the blood glucose levels, which are AFAIK pro inflammatory. Sugar added to a high fiber dish? Fine in my opinion.
funnym0nk3y··on Neural stimulation as a treatment for addiction
On the other hand there are the majority of people living under the same circumstances and are not getting addicted.

I think there is another way of getting rid of addictions: I heard of multiple people that quit smoking form one day to another which usually has a very low chance of success (~3%). One thing they had in common: They pursued their addiction and one day got so horribly sick that something changed. I think the Sinclair method follows a similar approach. Give alcohol addicted people naltrexone which blocks the rewards from ethanol but keeps the nasty side effects and then let them drink as they like.

And some things take time to forget or are even impossible to forget. Even after years and years of not riding a bike you don't forget how to if you learned it in your childhood. Same with driving a manual car and later switching to automatic transmission.

I'm very hopeful that psychedelics help with (un) learning.

There is so much psychedelic research happening right now. But when will it reach patients outside of trials?

What about all the add-on apps? Are they Foss as well? Or is this a minimal open core product like Odoo?
funnym0nk3y··on Apple is bigger than almost any stock market in the world
They do. Of course there is still a home bias.

AFAIK those stocks are traded directly on foreign exchanges.

funnym0nk3y··on Reduced cancer mortality with daily Vitamin D intake
Besides unneccessary expenses? I don't think so. 2000 IE should be fine, and thats with a safety margin of 2.
funnym0nk3y··on Are mental health apps better or worse at privacy in 2023?
So it's the state of mental health coverage in Germany too. It's bad. Although therapy is paid for by the mandatory health insurance, there are multiple issues: Wait times of months up to three quarters of a year for a place in hospital, similar wait periods for outpatient care. A lot of therapists won't put you on a waitlist anymore. Federal insurance won't issue more permits for therapist so it's a constant fight for already exhausted patients to find someone (not counting in of they get along). On top, there is more and more pressure to keep mental health costs down by limiting time for inpatient care, by limiting (or severely hinder any extension) the amount of hours and so on.
funnym0nk3y··on A bacterial culprit for rheumatoid arthritis?
That does not surprise me at all. For depression there is the chronic inflammation hypothesis which states that depression is caused by subacute inflammation in the brain. Some antibiotics work as antiinflammatory agents. Although a recent study did not show significant evidence for the treatment of chronic depression with antibiotics. Then there is something along the lines of underexpressed BDNF genes which get more expressed by butyrate which in turn is produced by gut bacteria. And there have been some case studies for treatment resistant depression where they did a stool transplant which improved the symptoms considerably.
funnym0nk3y··on Carl Braun on communicating like a grown-up (2016)
I would like the work environment to be like that.

But honestly I think all those things are just one half of the story. He favours a quieter approach, which I could image lead to being overseen.

funnym0nk3y··on The teen mental illness epidemic is international – Part 1: The Anglosphere
To me the theory seems to not fully explain the data, at least not the switch in phone types and instagram. IMHO it takes some time for a mental illness to form and the right circumstances are needed. It's nothing you catch like a cold.

I think the causes are multifactorial. First, you need a social structure that promotes or at least not inhibits mental illness. That I think is given in industrialized countries because of high stress for parents, little commitment among people and always increasing speed of life. In addition the middle class got smaller and smaller. Three are only two outcomes, poor or rich with little in-between. Then you need some awareness of mental illness. Even today mental illness is highly stigmatized, but back then it was even worse. There are a lot of older people who are visibly not well but won't get treatment for whatever reason and thus won't show up in statistics. And then, yes the media in general. My mum told me that back when she was young the sentiment of the media was more positive, there were articles about achievements without a critical differentiation. More negative news more frequently. All of that set the stage for young people to feel the need to get ahead to survive combined with a larger group for comparison results in a feeling of hopelessness in many.

funnym0nk3y··on Jerks might win the battle, but nice guys win the war
They can, yes. The question is, however, what their natural behaviour is. Are they generally nice people and act like jerks just to get ahead? Or are they jerks and need to keep it together with family, friends, etc? Either way, in one part of their life they need to behave against their nature.
funnym0nk3y··on Jerks might win the battle, but nice guys win the war
Maybe jerks get further ahead in life than "nice guys". Maybe they are in wealthier, more powerful and have more sex. And maybe they find person after person they can use to get ahead. But they constantly need to steer themselves and others. They can't have loving, caring and trusting relationships with people. They can't trust to be liked no matter what. In the same way they use people to get ahead, they themselves get left behind the moment they don't perform. This puts an immense pressure on them, and to put it in the words of the article, they are at war their whole life. I'd totally trade money and status for not fighting my whole life.
funnym0nk3y··on In Defense of Not-Invented-Here Syndrome (2001)
Isn't that the whole point of trading goods? Making the match between producer and customer? IMHO there is no added value in rolling shipping, or having inventory.
funnym0nk3y··on QwikTape: Do calculations, annotate like you would on a paper
What's the usecase for apps like this?

It seems like it is made for low complexity stuff, which I usually calculate in the fly. Anything more advanced will go into Excel.

funnym0nk3y··on U-Bahn station in Berlin is decorated with radioactive uranium glazed tiles
I'm very surprised that radiation workers are allowed half the dose which is directly linked to cancer. Especially because you get that dose in two years, imagine how much you get over a 40 year career.
funnym0nk3y··on Where are my Git UI features from the future?
First of all congratulations to shipping the first MVP! And I'm glad to hear that Pijul is very alive! No need to promise anything, I was just wondering.

I can't wait until Pijul escapes the nice and grows in popularity.

funnym0nk3y··on Where are my Git UI features from the future?
There seems to be some stagnation in pijul. I don't know if that's normal in this kind of project or if it's a indication of the future.
funnym0nk3y··on A swarm of robots built this tunnel [video]
I'm not a construction engineer by any means but there are a few things I can't warp my head around. Why are they using robots at all? It seems like a pretty big hassle to construct those robots that deposit large amounts of material with high pressure through a hole that needs to be drilled in their own tunnel. Why not excavate the volume between the small boring holes with the same technique they used to create them in the first place? Bore those smaller holes with equal spacing, fill them with concrete, and then repeat for the volume in between. What about steel? Not needed for in tunnels?
funnym0nk3y··on Is OpenStack fighting a lost battle?
I was very interested in Openstack for a homelab. I tried to wrap my head around it several times. It was just too difficult. Too difficult to install. Too difficult to understand the concept with the given documentation and resources.

With K8s you have all those opinionated distributions like K3s, minikube etc. which lower the bar considerably. There are countless guides on YouTube.
