fumar··on Make Something Wonderful – Steve Jobs in his own words
Why is it garish? I see it as the opposite and I am curious to hear another perspective.
fumar··on Dumb phones are on the rise in the U.S. as Gen Z looks to limit screen time
These run Android. I want a feature phone without Android spyware etc.
fumar··on Dumb phones are on the rise in the U.S. as Gen Z looks to limit screen time
No, but I want an eink feature phone capable of sms, voice, maps, compass, reader, and calculator. That would be my ideal everyday device.
fumar··on The inner life of the octopus (2022)
It is a great sci-fi novel. I recommend adding a spoiler tag to your comment. Let folks experience the book first hand.
fumar··on The Astonishing Transformation of Austin
I empathize as I had the same issues for decades. I grew up in the midwest and spent considerable time in NY too. I had three sinus surgeries before turning 30. I've been in SoCal for almost four years and my sinus issues rarely flare up.
fumar··on The Astonishing Transformation of Austin
Southern California. You can't escape compromising on certain factors like costs, but I find it a pleasant place to wake up everyday. As I've gotten older, I've prioritized my daily wellbeing more and more.
fumar··on The Astonishing Transformation of Austin
Interesting take on tech and Austin over a long period. I was one signature away from moving there in 2019. I had visited Austin on behalf of clients for fours years prior. It has it charms and a Texas-like version of Denver in a way. I passed on Austin because of its subtropical humid climate. My allergies coupled with high humidity made it an unbearable place to be for long periods of time. I put Miami in the same bucket. After years of traveling and experiencing multiple major US cities, I am sticking with Mediterranean climates.
fumar··on The teen mental illness epidemic began around 2012
This is accurate. I barely passed high school with heavy help from the counseling team. Then I went to a community college for a few years with low stress and learned how to study before transferring to a liberal arts college. I count myself lucky that I ended up in tech with an average career given my lack of guidance and motivation in my younger years. I wasn't anxious until more recently when I started building a house.
fumar··on Gattaca is still pertinent 25 years later
Maybe I am dating myself but Office Space was always popular.
fumar··on Yahoo is making a return to search
I tried to start this project before leaving Yahoo. At least in my orbit, no one was interested. I could’ve done a poor job of communicating the idea but there was/is too much churn after the Apollo acquisition.
fumar··on Min: A fast, minimal browser that protects your privacy
I’ve been using 1Blocker for a few years. If anyone knows a better one, please chime in. I like that it works on iOS and Mac Safari.
fumar··on Min: A fast, minimal browser that protects your privacy
I switched to Safari last year. The battery life improvements over Chrome makes it worth. It’s been a solid browser experience and I haven’t gone back to Chrome for anything. I wish I could add Kagi as a default search.
fumar··on The Tesla Semi cab from the practical POV of someone who drives trucks
How did you skip oil changes?
fumar··on The first Geely was a fake Mercedes-Benz E-Class based on a real Audi 100
Have you visited r/rivian lately? I think Rivian can sustain itself given the market opportunity and the end product is well received. Their R1 platform has won accolades across the auto community both established and new like Doug Demuro.
fumar··on The first Geely was a fake Mercedes-Benz E-Class based on a real Audi 100
I hope the American auto companies can respond quick enough. Rivian, Tesla, Canoo and similar are exciting to watch. American car companies didn't have the industry's attention until recently.
fumar··on Huawei phones automatically deleting videos of the protests?
It is never too late to start. Regardless of the CCP, we’ve witnessed the over reliance on a singular country for hardware and its supply chain impacts. It is time to diversify.
fumar··on High-documentation, low-meeting work culture
Correct. Be careful about sharing a document in progress, notes, or just simple thoughts in text. People will pick it apart word by word. Why? It is the culture Amazon created. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it's a waste of everyone's time.
fumar··on High-documentation, low-meeting work culture
Amazon is high documentation, high meetings culture. The documentation is reviewed by peers, bar raisers, and leaders in a process called document read before being official.

Edit: Someone asked for more detail on high meeting culture. There are constant meetings between cross-functional teams, various leadership stakeholders, and ongoing operational planning. That is not including your day to day meetings within your sub team or the follow up meetings from doc reads or the new team launch meetings, etc. Amazon tech is a high meeting culture.

fumar··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
Do you have examples?
fumar··on Was everyone stupid back then?
Is that a millennial in the comic? I thought it was a Gen X or older character. Back in our day, I am thinking mid to late 90’s for techno optimism at its peak.
fumar··on Netflix launches an ad-supported tier
Advertising that is partially powered by Microsoft. Yes, Netflix is selling audience data.
fumar··on Netflix launches an ad-supported tier
Correct. This is the start of increasing prices and testing ads on other tiers.
fumar··on iPhone 14 Pro camera review: A small step, a huge leap
Do you have examples to share? I am interested as I shoot with film, mirrorless, and on iPhones.
fumar··on Meta Myths
Ben Thompson always writes positive Meta and FB content. I was a paid subscriber until I realized his strong bias for all things Zuck.
fumar··on reMarkable 2
I never picked up a reMarkable because its DPI is ~220. The Kindle Scribe solves this with 300 DPI.
fumar··on Mortal Kombat+
MK2 brings back massive memories from my youth. Taking a step back, are fighting games popular today? I don't game much, but I haven't seen or heard of any major fighting games outside of RPG style battles.
fumar··on Twilio cutting 11% – Letter from CEO [pdf]
This is not how I understood the phrasing. Layoffs can include a mix of randomization, removal of non-critical areas or groups, and quantitative low performers (reviews). The initial output of the layoffs may have skewed in one direction incorrectly representing marginalized communities or maybe not. Twilio says they would attempt remove a bias to baseline.
fumar··on Apple Introduces Apple Watch Ultra
The Apple Watch charging routine works best with 15-20 minute spurts when available. I will wear it to sleep, and charge it when I wake up for less than 30 minutes as I ready for a run or gym session. Then I charge it again while I shower. I never worry about battery life unless I travel.
fumar··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
Why are all supplements gummies lately? I see rows of gummy supplements at pharmacy and groceries. I would rather take a pill.
fumar··on Is this the end of social networking?
I've been spending more time on Discord. It is replaced forums and subreddits for many of my interests like synthesizers and music. I don't like that the information is stored in a chat-style vs posts.
