fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Tired of software career. What now?
you've missed craft beer brewing
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Looking for kids books about famous people
my kids learnt lots about historical people from the Horrible Histories series - both the books and excellent TV series(one of those series that appeals to adults as much as kids)
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What's a lucrative niche technical skill you can learn on your own?
Not just cobol - but running/supporting legacy systems(eg older Java systems). Its a mix of business logic and learning/remembering old ways of doing tech.
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Visualize Software Architecture/Concepts
I like gliphy - i can use layers and show each team the relevant information. I can also use links to confluence pages

I also use plantuml a lot

fiftyacorn··on Best device for a kid to learn how to code?
Id honestly leave him with Scratch - Im amazed at the creativity and skills of the scratch community. From complex games to animations.

My daughter is into Warrior cats and loves the whole fan fiction animations around that community. Its really impressive

fiftyacorn··on Reversal of autism symptoms among dizygotic twins: A case report
sounds like ABA with diet
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Advice for leading a software migration?
For me the first assessment is what can i throw away - what processes can be replaced or arent used? Does new system offer any new ways of doing it - discuss this with business areas

Then see whats left

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Do you try teaching your kids to code?
I dont teach them to code but have offered to teach them

My daughter is really into mit scratch - particularly the animation and fan fiction stuff which is really interesting as its really creative

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Treadmill under your desk – gimmick or worth it?
Not a walking desk but I picked up a secondhand yoyo desk bike figuring if it was rubbish I'd resell it

I love it and do 20-30 miles a day on it. It's not training but the cycling helps me think

I've read a few blogs and seen some YouTube since and all the reviews are the same with people surprised how much fun it is

fiftyacorn··on Free unexpected MIT courses to kick start the new year
I think ill do the beatles one
fiftyacorn··on Psychopathic men have more children, study finds
I wonder what the average number of children male politicians have is?
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Do you homeschool?
We home-school my autistic daughter as school never worked and affected her mental health, and is going ok. We adopt the unschooling approach - the structure of formal learning doesnt work and she blitzes thru topics

Ive seen an increase in home schooling in the UK since Covid - especially amongst ND kids. I think online schooling showed them they can learn without the aspects of school that they found really hard.

There was a discussion on HN a few weeks ago on home schooling and it descended into criticism due to its association with religion and a path to teach creationism, or not educated women. This doesnt happen as much in the UK and i felt the discussion didnt cover the positives of home ed

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What is the smartest person you know working on?
I totally agree - but its sad the answer is invariably "her" with the woman having to stop their career to raise children and the reason is nearly always the husband earns more

My wife has had to stop her career to home educate my autistic daughter as the education system failed her. The key decision on who does the home education was economic, although she is doing a much better job than i ever would

When I look at the facebook groups for others in the same situation its always the woman stopping her career

fiftyacorn··on Experts warn Letby inquiry of misreading stats to explain 'suspicious' deaths
One thing the Letby trial left me wondering was how do doctors and nurses working in areas with higher levels of mortality protect themselves from this sort of accusation? And whether this would put doctors off doing riskier procedures?
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What does the world need from software engineers now?
Write software that runs on old hardware - look how much tech goes in the bin because of planned obsolescence
fiftyacorn··on Learn COBOL in a day
Ive never found the learning of COBOL to be the issue - its the integration of it into organisations can go back 50+ years, and is wrapped in process

Its more like the game minefield - you tread carefull

fiftyacorn··on J.D. Salinger and wielding copyright as self-protection
It reminds me of the film Coming Through The Rye(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coming_Through_the_Rye_(film) ) about some school kids trying to get permission to put on a play of Catcher in the Rye and getting refused, and decide to visit JD Salinger
fiftyacorn··on Tell HN: Easy and Effective Gmail Cleanup
It annoys me bulk delete is so hard on gmail - best i can think of is to get the email backup from google takeout and bulk delete the lot
fiftyacorn··on Silicon Valley elites revealed as investors behind $800M Bay Area land grab
It will be like that episode of the Simpsons "They Saved Lisa's Brain" - where the super-intelligent take over Springfield and its a disaster
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Do you use any apps or tools to limit your kids' screen time?
This is one of my gripes about kids being online - every platform has some different setting for parental control and screen time whether its google, apple, PS or nintendo

Id like to see some consistency where i can link my Google Parent Link to Apple - and it automatically applies those settings under another platform

Its not like Im using the ipad or console for baby sitting - but its the balance between allowing children to experiment vs their own safety.

Its really frustrating

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Who is the happiest person you know?
Ive always hated "If" as it captures that British Imperialist viewpoint at that point in history

Its background is that it was written as a tribute to Jameson after the failed Jameson raid - which was an attempted South African coup

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What YouTube channels do you watch with your kids?
Mostly nonsense ones - unboxing, a few minecraft, some football ones

The educational stuff is BBC bitesize

I dont mind them watching this stuff as it lets them switch off and have downtime when not doing anything

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What does a newbie need to know in order to avoid AWS cost disasters?
Ive always wanted a AWS Billing Alert with a button like "Stop Everything" - that stops all my processes in case Ive made a mistake.

I also wish AWS offered more protection at say cdk or cloudformation level. A sort of "are you sure you want to do this" on capturing some event

fiftyacorn··on The Lost Album of the Beatles review – deeply researched what-ifs
I still laugh about Ringos comment - 'ELO broke up when they ran out of our stuff to recycle'

Ive seen Jeff Lynne laughing at that too in interviews

fiftyacorn··on George Harrison and the Struggle for Creative Freedom
No mention of "In spite of all the danger" by the quarrymen which was a Mccartney/Harrison collaboration

I liked the early Harrison songs like - "I need you" and "You like me to much" on Help. Even the anthology released "You Know What to Do" was good

fiftyacorn··on Bicycle
The production of quality steel isnt thousands of years old.

Yeah they could produce small items - but to make the steel of the quality needed for bicycles is pretty new - the past 150-200 years with the Bessemer process

fiftyacorn··on Swiss Are on the Hook for $13,500 Each on Credit Suisse Bailout
Its more than "Privatise profits, socialise losses"

Its the intrinsic arrogance that the profits are somehow due to the business prowess of these charlatans, while any losses are due to "the market"

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Tips for a new team lead who is hiring
I disagree about the being friends - its important to get along - but you dont need to be friends

I also think you risk excluding people from hiring who would make great hires because they dont fit into your view of "friend", and there are plenty people who cant do things like go for work drinks due to family commitments, being carers and just want to get the job done

fiftyacorn··on UBS agrees to buy Credit Suisse
I was including that - the issue to me is that banking needs better regulation to stop them getting into this situation in the first place
fiftyacorn··on UBS agrees to buy Credit Suisse
This is the problem with banking - they mess up, get bought buy a competitor to sweep the problem under the carpet and kick the can down. this reduces competitors in the marketplace. Eventually there is a state bailout
