fiftyacorn··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
Security - checking your not accessing it in UK one minute and australia the next minute

Some bank apps can block this access or request more validation

fiftyacorn··on Tell HN: Old.reddit.com Requires Login
Its reddits digg moment
fiftyacorn··on SETI@Home was the coolest thing
I miss the old days. I remember there being an experimental one to break i think 40k encryption to get everyone to up their level
fiftyacorn··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Its not just shrinkflation for these mars bars. Its sugar tax to reduce obesity
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Is Reddit trying to kill old Reddit?
Not just that but they are trying to force you to the all or login. I stopped posting on reddit years ago but still browse it and just get use the app or login messages

Something new will come along soon enough

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Prediction for SpaceX IPO?
Im more concerned about the implications for index funds - the whole changing of the NASDAQ rules for SpaceX and AI stocks doesnt sit right.

The whole IPO and the AI stock IPO's are designed with valuations to force the trackers to invest in them, while the metrics and businesses still have significant risks and overly high P/E

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: How you pass legacy to others?
I do a yearly update of all important account details and passwords on a shared keepass. Then sit down annually to review it all.

Outside this i have encrypted drives and shared passwords on this

Also review wills and power of attorney every few years

fiftyacorn··on Details of the Daring Airdrop at Tristan Da Cunha
The general trend of the past years has increased immigration

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/migration-advisor...

Its not an open border and the rules changed and now it is decreasing

fiftyacorn··on Details of the Daring Airdrop at Tristan Da Cunha
Not sure what that means. What do you think the Uk claims to own?

Lots of european countries owned colonies until the post-war settlement.

And immigration to UK is at an all time high so not sure on other point?

fiftyacorn··on Details of the Daring Airdrop at Tristan Da Cunha
Yeah and helps demonstrate thst Tristan is strategically important
fiftyacorn··on Which country will be the first to pass laws limiting Meta Ray-Ban glasses?
Luxotica are an eu company which makes me think the eu wont ban them
fiftyacorn··on UK Government Kicks Out Palantir
Sort of but then you have the west lothian question, about Scottish or Welsh MPs voting on English issues. For instance these MPs should never have voted on student loans
fiftyacorn··on UK Government Kicks Out Palantir
Id originally thought the nhs contract covered the whole UK, but the devolved governments in Scotland and Wales arent covered

I honestly feel an English assembly covering NHS wouldnt of allowed it

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What would you like to be working on?
There is a lot of information out there on improving cycling performance using wider tyres, waxed chains - but for me a lot of it centers around professional riders riding at 30mph, and not the recreational cyclist wanting to improve 15mph to 20mph

I think there is a lot of data out there that can highlight affordable ways to do this - so you dont need top of the range tyres for the 15-20mph shift. Also recreational cyclists arent tied to UCI rules as they arent competitive - so can make changes in this area

Id like to collate this information to help riders at a practical level

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Do you know the ethics of Developers?
I remember reading James Gliecks book genius about Richard Feynmann. The pages that always stuck were the post-bomb stance of oppenheimer vs teller. A lot of scientists viewed the morality as a question for philosophers or politicians, and it caused a lot of conflict

I think the current state of tech is similar, but devs should have morality. The idea of some ai scoring system deciding who lives and dies outside the geneva convention is wrong.

Also the end usage of the profits from some businesses is important. The whole techno fuedalism should be challenged

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: The death of software development as a job?
Im relying in sentient AI realising how frustrating and soul destroying development can be, then deciding to go off and do something more constructive
fiftyacorn··on AI is starting to beat doctors at making correct diagnoses
This isnt a bad thing - it frees doctors up to work on cases that are harder to diagnose. So if AI can check scans or tests for cancers - great, doctors can focus on treatment

The only issue i have is the platforms that peoples medical histories are shared on, and what is done to protect patients

fiftyacorn··on Inventions for battery reuse and recycling increase seven-fold in last decade
I had a friend working on tech to recycle ev car batteries for household storage. One of the issues has been that the durability of these batteries is much better than people thought
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
The later ones cover his breakdown and the early days of the goons

I hadnt read them for years and Al Murray was talking about them on his ww2 podcast and i reread them

I remember reading his cameo in life of brian was due to him happening to be in the dessert researching the later books

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
Spike Milligans war diaries - i love how he captures the banter and laughs amongst everyman soldiers in WW2, and how you can see the seeds of the goon show and monty python developing in WW2. He also balances it well with the sadness of war
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Is AI resulting in net revenue gain for non-tech companies?
Im surprised we dont hear more about AI fails already - the odd db getting dropped but not much else
fiftyacorn··on Interview with Bob Odenkirk
American or British farce?
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What skills are future proof in an AI driven job market?
Communication and networking - i think we'll see devs expected to bridge to the BA role and deliver based on that. So being able to communicate will become more important
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Building a solo business is impossible
The issue is that building is the easy bit, but most devs lack sales and marketing

Its like a builder cpuld build a doctor surgery but it doesnt make them a doctor

fiftyacorn··on Let's talk space toilets
Oddly enough my department done work into heart replacement valves - the fluid mechanic element of blood flows as a non-newtonian fluid matched a lot of chemical plant calculations. The labs had lots of heart valves and simulators lying around
fiftyacorn··on Let's talk space toilets
My degree is chemical engineering and thats pretty close to a degree in plumbing
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: LeetCode, anyone still doing it?
I do it - but more like a crossword. Do one a day or so

Same issues though - normally comes down to knowing a trick rather for leetcode than actual coding

fiftyacorn··on John Deere to pay $99M in right-to-repair settlement
Let me check who the second largest shareholder is - ah its bill gates
fiftyacorn··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
Im hoping more for red dwarf
