faramarz··on Visualizing Attention, a Transformer's Heart [video]
GPT-4 is configurable up to 96 layers, each running their own embeddings. I think it was a business choice to afford the compute while they scale.
faramarz··on Visualizing Attention, a Transformer's Heart [video]
it's not about a single point encapsulating a novel, but how sequences of such embeddings can represent complex ideas when processed by the model's layers.

each prediction is based on a weighted context of all previous tokens, not just the immediately preceding one.

faramarz··on Show HN: Daily price tracking for Trader Joe's
Ha! The uptrend towards Valentine’s Day - florals up from $9.99 to $14.99!

Really cool, and gives you POV like you’d get with Uber Surge.

Is this how retailers hedge and make up for losses elsewhere?

I wish we could also know tracked wholesale price.

faramarz··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal
Undemocratic or capitalistic but with a cap?

If it were such that individual states with greater agency could negatively impact neighbouring states and in Chevrons original case, environment and agriculture, then it’s a dangerous precedent of opening up states to competitive market at the detriment greater societal impact and responsibilities. Both positive and negative but the incentives are there to push towards later in pursuit of fast profits and deferred responsibilities.

Am I making sense? States can compete for corporate interests, while we know full well who runs the senate: lobbyists with deep pockets.

faramarz··on Gemini AI
That’s what makes Altman a great leader. He understands marketing better than many of these giants. Google got caught being too big. Sure they will argue that AI mass release is a dangerous proposition, but Sam had to make a big splash otherwise he would be competing with incumbent marketing spendings far greater than OpenAI could afford.

It was a genius move to go public with a simple UI.

No matter how stunning the tech side is, if human interaction is not simple, the big stuff doesn’t even matter.

faramarz··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Maybe the vision is to eventually bring UBI into it and cap earn outs. Not so wild given Sam’s world coin and his UBI efforts when he was YC president.
faramarz··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
Rebalance the board and it’s important that Ilya stays. But Ilya goes as collateral damage to save face, they have to, by whatever means necessary, secure Geoffrey Hinton.

It may turn out that the unusual governance model is the only way to bring about a desired outcome here without fully selling out to MS.

faramarz··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
Sounds like cooler heads are coming to terms with how bad the outcome would be for their gigantic first mover advantage is. Even with if they are not the first mover, the brand value of the company ands its founding composition of technical minds are going to be hard to replicate
faramarz··on The Humane AI Pin Launches Its Campaign to Replace Phones
I don’t even care if the quality of the build is great, I bet it is, I just don’t see consumer market ready for something like this. They might have better luck in b2b world of logistics warehousing. Why are we still solving for non-existing problems? Look shiny new ai thing
faramarz··on Atlassian Acquires Loom
I think it's more likely that Atlassian gives it away for free to its client base .. groups like Linear are coming after them and tools like Loom make a material difference in getting quality work out the door. we use it for outward facing and training material, but the royal honey is when you can async-align on product initiatives down to the pixel. Video is a powerful story telling tool in today's remote world.

Figma on the other hand will have to sway towards Atlassian territory to add value to the tech bit of the pipeline. the dev mode has made it clear they are headed that way, on their own terms.

I just wish that more founders prioritize enterprise customers and clear the way to onboard by investing in compliance (SOC-2) reporting early! it's a total showstopper and that's unfortunate for all sides.

faramarz··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
Well... industry taps into all your mic, gps and image library to send you personalized ads, and no one has really called it out, except be surprised when the ad shows up a minute after mentioning a product.. this to me sounds like tapping into the existing frameworks. likely the app providers giving access if not the phone manufacturer themselves.
faramarz··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
I think Scott Belsky (bechance), Chief of Product, strongly influenced this acquisition! he's been the breath of fresh air and innovation that Adobe has needed over the years! As long as he's at Adobe, we're in good hands. Frankly, I'd be glad if my existing Adobe suite at $105/month covers Figma in the fold.

I do wonder if this means sunset for Adobe xD, which I'm totally cool with. This whole market was Sketch's for the losing, and I suspect at some point a merger with Abstract and Invision makes sense for them.

faramarz··on Ask HN: Burnt out developer trying to move out of Iran, advices?
My advice, do remote jobs that pay in crypto until you've saved enough until you can travel out of the country. even if you make it to Turkey Today and are able to get online with a bank account, you're set up for global commerce.

Focus on front end web design if you have to and partner with a local graphic designer to land bigger contracts.

feel free to DM on twitter if you need specific advice. I'm just a hamvatan but not a developer.

faramarz··on Ask HN: Burnt out developer trying to move out of Iran, advices?
Iran isn't connected to the world banking system, only way they can tap into the world economy is through crypto and many centralized services and wallets have blocked Iranian artist/dev wallets on known platforms.

Super smart engineers who would otherwise kill it in remote work.

faramarz··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
Go outside more and in nature; feel the earth, digital detox once a day every week. in these times of quiet, introduce play in to your life. Introverts like myself do great on bikes. it's a solo experience, it gets your blood pumping and you benefit from the outdoors. I can't state this enough, take your socks off and feel the earth underneath you.

You are worthy of all that you desire, don't let some bullshit title misguide you into comparing yourself to others. DM me on twitter if you like chat on this.

Burn out anxiety is real and will spiral out of control if you don't pause, and breathe in order to re-evaluate from an inspired/excited mental and energetic space.

faramarz··on Ask HN: Coping with cancer in the family
I'm really sorry to hear that. This post is bringing back memories of my uncle. He had a two year battle with battle with brain tumour, and he was the smartest person I know, Principal scientist at Qualcomm.

After learning about his terminal cancer, I didn't know what to do. I distracted myself with work not knowing how heart broken I was. Finally after two months, it took a very intense yoga class to break me open and let out the tears and face the grief of losing him.

As others have mentioned, talking to a therapist will help you navigate the feelings so that you can be more present with her, in whatever capacity you can.

I have such fond memories of the little things I got to do with him. The little big things.

take care of yourself <3

faramarz··on Suez Canal says traffic in channel resumes after stranded ship refloated

faramarz··on CDC website built by Deloitte at a cost of $44M is abandoned due to bugs
Wow! the next article should be about who signed that contract!
faramarz··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp

faramarz··on Canada's 350-year-old department store Hudson's Bay locked out by landlords
Across from my current residence is The Bay tower at Yonge and Bloor here in Toronto. for the past 6months+, the 100 foot illuminated sign at the top of the tower has been broken revealing bright white light at the chipped part, instead of the symbolic yellow of the logo. the brokenness is telling.
faramarz··on Tony Hsieh has died
He really was a visionary who was able to take action.

I’m gutted to hear this news. His gentle demeanour and the awe and wonder I experienced reading his book in one sitting has left a lasting impression on me.

Rest In Peace

faramarz··on Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is stepping down after 21 years
When he came out with his book, I read it cover-to-cover in a night and so enjoyed it for the engaging narrative. I wish him all the best.
faramarz··on Carving out a niche as a small artist on Spotify
Thank you both. First time hearing, will give it a run!
faramarz··on Carving out a niche as a small artist on Spotify
LOL! Same shoe; I cannot escape the piano and other instrumentals I played during my wife's pregnancy months. I'm almost at a point of surrender that maybe my time with Deep House and Electronic music has reached an end. The Discovery Weekly was my only way of finding hot indie talent in the electronics world.
faramarz··on WeWork sues SoftBank over canceled $3B tender offer
Wow, that won't bode well with the other investors I imagine. At some point in the near future, other players or current investors will have to either pump more cash into this investment or let it go bust. damn, what a story though. rapid growth to rapid decline.
faramarz··on Switching from Sketch to Figma
Well.. that's what the Abstract is; Visual Git for Sketch files. We're using Abstract + Sketch at the moment and I can't complain. Being able to export the file or opening it track/untracked is a real benefit sometimes.

That said, Figma promises to be the combination of Abstract + Sketch + Invision and thats what has me intrigued. Going to a Figma webinar may ease a lot of my worry.

faramarz··on 18-year-old personal website, built with Frontpage and still updated
