eyeface··on Sony reaches $2m Shenmue III game target on Kickstarter within hours
It makes sense as a way to gauge interest, similar to pre-orders.
eyeface··on Clampdown on cold call companies unveiled by government
The problem is not that cold calling doesn't work, it's that I do not want you to cold call me.
eyeface··on The Whole Haystack: The N.S.A. claims it needs access to all our phone records
Fair, but there have to be some diminishing returns there. If there had been two 9/11 style events in short succession, would we have gone to twice as many wars?
eyeface··on Spooky Alignment of Quasars Across Billions of Light-years
Well, the ones we can see are! They're very very very distant objects that are very very bright, but they mostly emit along their axes. So, we can only detect the ones that are pointing at us.
eyeface··on Launching in 2015: A Certificate Authority to Encrypt the Entire Web
Sure! If I trust your site but not my ISP, then https allows me to trust the connection between us. That means that nobody can tamper with the content and inject some malicious JS. Also, the ISP could only tell that I am talking to your server, and not anything beyond that.
eyeface··on Tesla: Introducing Autopilot and Dual Motor All Wheel Drive
I don't think the term is misleading at all. Autopilot on aircraft does not remove the need for a pilot, it just maintains course and speed.
eyeface··on Why is Netflix Buffering? Dispelling the Congestion Myth
If Verizon feels that Netflix should pass the costs on to the consumers, how would they go about that? Much like Verizon can't know if a user will be using Netflix, Netflix can't know what networks a specific user will come in from, so they'd have to spread the costs over all subscribers, just like Verizon.
eyeface··on Andromeda and the Milky Way: A Merger of Galactic Proportions
The original link suits me better, as I've hit the article limit. The video link works fine.
eyeface··on The greatest bug I never fixed (2010)
If I remember correctly, there's a probability that a line will end with "...hic!" or that s will be replaced with sh. It won't happen every time, so your first message could go through fine. A checksum is probably best.

Character names will never contain punctuation, so expecting a possible terminating "...hic!" and ignoring it is fine.

eyeface··on Urine in Portland reservoir: How dangerous is pee in drinking water?
Sarcasm? Can't tell.

If it is, then it's ill-placed. A commissioner is someone who is granted a commission and is appointed.

eyeface··on Those Who Say Code Does Not Matter
If we're talking about returns, then C/C++ would behave the same way. The second return is unreachable.

A duplicated line that isn't idempotent and that doesn't jump out of the current scope would be problematic.

eyeface··on $19B later, Facebook now wants to own my phone
Everything else aside, what caught my eye was "Change network connectivity, connect and disconnect from WiFi."

That seems bizarre.

eyeface··on Planes Landing in Beijing: Video from Space
Parent knows this, and was asking what could be done with modern hardware, given that keyhole-class satellites have been up for 30 years.
eyeface··on Reflections on Curly Braces – Apple’s SSL Bug and What We Should Learn From It
The idea that was hammered into my head in school is that you should have a single point of truth.
eyeface··on 300ms tap delay removed on Chrome for Android
I can't agree with this. The two-tap is my most common gesture on my phone's browser. A two-finger tap would be extremely awkward one-handed.
eyeface··on XCOM JavaScript port
The original was called XCOM: UFO Defense in North America vs UFO: Enemy Unknown everywhere else.
eyeface··on The secret button at pedestrian crossings
It's not echo location, though. It's far easier to pinpoint where a sound is coming from than to echo locate; sighted people can do it, too.
eyeface··on Cancer and Startups
It is easy to focus on the "glory" positions, but easy to forget all of the support required. For a doctor to save someone who comes in on an ambulance, there's the other staff in the hospital, the training for everyone, the tools, the work to get the right tools in the right place, the roads the ambulance drove in on, etc etc.
eyeface··on Https URLs posted in private Skype chats visited by Microsoft
Do you mean that GET requests shouldn't modify data? A URL that deletes everything would be idempotent; if it's hit once, it's the same effect as if it's hit many times.
eyeface··on Pocket Meteorology: Using Android Phones to Crowdsource the Weather
On the dashboard, there are four measures: Temperature, Light, Pressure, and Magnetic Flux. I know that my phone (Galaxy Nexus) has the last three, but I wonder where the temperature data is coming from. The only temperature data I can find with AndroSensor is the battery temperature. Are all these values live readings of my sensors?

[edit] I should note that the temperature on the dashboard is ~85 degrees Farenheit, when the current temperature is about 20F lower.

eyeface··on CISPA Passes in the House - Full Roll Call
Are the MA representatives allowed to vote while not present? It seems very strange that an entire state's representatives will not have a vote on this issue because of a scheduling conflict. Can the votes not be phoned in?
eyeface··on A non-mathematical explanation of one way functions
An algorithm that takes polynomial time would not be feasible given the size of a dictionary, assuming you're running it on poor old Bob (who is not a computer).
eyeface··on NASA-backed fusion engine could cut Mars trip down to 30 days
I think you would suddenly have a great many political problems.
eyeface··on [dead]
Being from the area, I don't recall Mayflower as being very rural. It's a town near Conway which, while small, is not rural. Right off I-40.
eyeface··on How MIT Became the Most Important University in the World
It also seems to assume that there is an intellectual capital of the world.
eyeface··on Apple has lost their legal claim to the iPhone name in Mexico
You pull the trigger, maybe you miss (Apple not winning the lawsuit), then they pull their gun...
eyeface··on Facebook fought SEC to keep Mobile risks hidden before IPO
Similarly naive answer: I'd imagine that the benefits of having a massive IPO and then having your stock tank are substantially less than having an increase in your stock value over time, as a company.
eyeface··on Organism without a brain creates external memories for navigation
Could you elaborate on what an 'external memory' would be then?
eyeface··on Diablo III open beta this weekend
Is this really HN material?
eyeface··on What's the point of Android now?
When did he say he was running ICS?

The complaint was that a simple app was needlessly unusable on his phone.
