eterps··on Show HN: OpenRecall FOSS alternative to Microsoft's new Recall feature

    > I see strong potential in this feature
Can you elaborate on what potential you're seeing? As a typical HN user (in my case a software engineer), I have difficulty imagining in which ways it could be useful (especially on a platform like Linux for example).

This is an honest question, not criticism.

eterps··on OpenRecall
I can imagine a lot of developers are living mostly in the terminal and browser. Wouldn't it be much more efficient to integrate on that level instead of taking screenshots?
eterps··on OpenRecall
Regardless whether you'd want to use something like this, in which cases could it be useful?
eterps··on Patrick Breyer and Pirate Party Lose EU Parliament Seats
> people still think they are single issue

Changing the name of the party would help a great deal IMO

eterps··on Signal: Will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees
> they just can't provide an automated means to do that for you

What I'm wondering is whether two separate applications can be set up to communicate automatically, with one handling messaging and the other being responsible for encrypting and decrypting the data.

What would be against the law in that case? The messaging app? The encryption app? Or the interaction you are doing in that moment?

eterps··on After 6 years, I'm over GraphQL

    > Data fetching and the N+1 problem
    > [...] if a field resolver hits an external data source such as a DB or HTTP API, and
    > it is nested in a list containing N items, it will do those calls N times
Why is this considered a problem regardless of the situation at hand?

F.e. using REST, if the nested list contains on average N-2 items that can be efficiently cached, wouldn't that be better than having the cache constantly invalidated on the aggregation of the parent and its items?

eterps··on Writing a Unix clone in about a month
For example, in the past Amiga computers had a 'GPU' (although much less powerful than todays GPUs) with a stable interface. It was a first class citizen in its OS. It also was incredibly easy to target in Assembly language.
eterps··on Writing a Unix clone in about a month
That wouldn't be too hard if GPU's would have a stable interface. Try programming a GPU in Assembly language and see how that goes. The experience sucks, but that's the level that needs to be targeted in case of an OS.
eterps··on Writing a Unix clone in about a month
Would love to read a blog post about that.
eterps··on Fastest rate of natural carbon dioxide rise over the last 50k years
I also think it's bewildering when people say things like that. Are they thinking that humans are incapable of causing climate change no matter what they do? Or that we are currently not in trouble and fine for decades/centuries to come?

eterps··on Lowercase – A simple way to take and share notes
I use the Markor app from F-Droid. The notes are plain text or markdown files in a folder that is synced to my desktops using Syncthing. It felt incredibly liberating once I got this setup working.
eterps··on Zooming User Interface (ZUI)
The Oberon version in Wirth's book doesn't have a zooming interface. But the variant of Oberon called 'Bluebottle' does.

What techniques are you referring to?

This would probably work well with LoFi black metal.

eterps··on The EU Wants Its Own DNS Resolver That Can Block 'Unlawful' Traffic,TorrentFreak
The most used third-party options include Google, Cloudflare, OpenDNS and Norton, which are all US-based. This large foreign footprint has the EU worried.

This is understandable but the integration of government, DNS, and particularly blocking is a controversial intersection of concepts.

> Egan's short stories are great [...] I've never been huge fan of his long form novels

Same here, I love his short stories!

IMO short form works better for him because there's so much to think about, even after having finished reading a story.

If someone needs a pointer on where to start I can recommend this thread: https://redlib.freedit.eu/r/printSF/comments/x1i4bj/greg_ega...

I especially enjoyed:

eterps··on How Programming Languages Got Their Names
The information provided in the literature on Oberon contradicts this claim. Furthermore, the moon is depicted on the covers of some books about it.

eterps··on Command line interface guidelines (2021)
The most comprehensive CLI guidelines in the past have been in this book by Eric Raymond:

It has been a while since I read that book, but after skimming through clig.dev I gather opinions have changed over time quite a bit.

eterps··on Juice – Oberon JIT browser plugin (1996)
I remember that difference as well. It's a shame it didn't take off.
eterps··on Juice – Oberon JIT browser plugin (1996)
There's nothing preventing you to use a Result type in Oberon. Just not as a fancy algebraic data type, but rather as a regular record/struct type.

I am not too impressed by its features. The most useful thing to have would be mouse hover support (f.i. for showing LSP based info).
