eof··on Fewer Than Half of Google Searches Now Result in a Click
The world our ancestors lived in was too. We traded one hell for another.
eof··on Google unlocks 33% of publisher paywalls on July 30
Not really. Problems arise when you have many people behind the same IP. You can hand-wave this problem away for family units behind a router, but you'll soon find out there are entire institutions (schools, office buildings with lots of unrelated companies in them, etc) that will share an IP.
eof··on Currency (Restrictions on the Use of Cash) Bill 2019
I wonder if we are going to reach a sort of singularity with regard to encroachment on privacy in western countries where we both take it for granted that privacy is a right, and live in societies where actual privacy is clearly trending somewhere just above zero.

I don't think this is really about cryptocurrency particularly. This is about electronic transfers generally. My read on this was that the government is basically saying "big transactions can't be in something we can't feasibly track."

Australia seems quite aggressive in this regard; also openly banning encryption.

I used to be up in arms about this stuff. Now I am older and mostly trust (for my threat model) off-the-shelf end to end encryption for basically anything I consider private.

But I also don't care about the privacy thing anymore. I kind of hope the people 10+ years younger than me still care about that stuff. Google reading/mining the dick jokes I've been sharing back and forth in a dying g-chat window for the last 10 years? Whatever. I'd still keep the conversation there just for intertia's sake; even though I also assume its adding to google's model about me.

I don't think, at least in countries culturally similar to the US (the one I know the most), any populous will embrace the idea of "let the experts of the government see everything so you can all be safe"; but, it also seems that we will just trend toward that and kinda pretend like its not happening.

Differentiating between natural and sexual selection feels pretty hand wavy to me (also not a biologist.)

Your hot-guy rockstar example perfectly illustrates how sexual selection is natural selection. If something is super attractive but also interferes with breeding, it’s not going to have a lasting impact on a species (if it’s genetic).

What’s the fitness here of the tooth-horn?

eof··on Ask HN: Getting Started Investing
Some people seeking funding don’t seem like good investments.
eof··on Elsevier cuts off UC’s access to its academic journals
Probably because in the USA higher education is an objectively bad move for most of the people that undertake it. Combine that with the fact that they’ve been told forever it’s a good/necessary thing and you can see bitterness start to creep in.
eof··on Craig Wright faces tough questions over forged documents in court
Can someone explain the public address thing? The courts seem to demand he list the public addresses where all Thai early mines bitcoin lies.

He says he cannot produce it because of this splintered trust.

But, the addresses are available for all to see on the blockchain itself, it is the private keys which are hidden away.

How is this basic fact just ignored in all these proceedings?

eof··on Strongest earthquake in years rattles Southern California
I think the lack of damage from this shows a high degree of preparation. This same earthquake 50 years ago would have likely been much worse.
eof··on CNLabelContactRelationYoungerCousinMothersSiblingsDaughterOrFathersSistersDaughter
Seems to be working fine.
eof··on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp outages
Sure but if there were some other weird conspiracy, they would still likely say something like this.
eof··on Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series
Part of this phenomenon is likely that thc heavy strains have been selected for over time (at the expense of cbd) because people valued the “potency” of the flower.

Another major aspect is that weed has been illegal for most of its modern usage, and the fact that people are doing something illegal/dangerous adds to the anxiety.

eof··on I thought I made a hard game and then speedrunners destroyed it
And then think of the fact that people are going to pay money to have software interfacing directly with their brains/neurons.
eof··on Why is Stack Overflow trying to start audio?
Safari on iOS allows limited content blocking. It doesn’t allow ad blocking anywhere else, which is most of the platform.

And, I was referring to the future and trends rather than the current situation. System wide ad blocking used to be possible on iOS without jailbreaking, now it’s not.

I expect in time google will go similar and change android APIs, or play store rules, to do similar.

eof··on Why is Stack Overflow trying to start audio?
Seems obvious without thought to me that it’s mostly moot. Very few people will be running machines like we have for the last 30-40 years, most will be on Android/iOS where ad blocking will be minimal.

Savvy users will continue to block on machines that aren’t walled gardens and through pi-hole style blocking.

I think the cat and mouse aspect will be completely overshadowed by tech giants continually neutering their users ability to block ads.

eof··on Fresh look at mysterious Nasca lines in Peru
I am going to leave it because it's interesting. But think that the above is a photoshop. I didn't notice at first, but since I learned that the lady, Maria Reiche, who was an early champion of the nazca lines, had 9 fingers; having lost one to a cactus. http://enperublog.com/2008/12/01/nine-fingered-destiny-of-ma...

Considering their digit-counting to identify the hermit, I am curious what they think about this one:

eof··on Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat's plant-based burgers aren't healthier
I think saying “a major reason” is fair and accurate, but I agree that the it seems people are, in general, much more concerned about the ethics of industrial farming as it relates to animal cruelty, as well as beef being such a large contributor to co2.

Presumably by creating ai generated personas dissidents could get some manner of protection from this type of surveillance.
eof··on Bitcoin's Rally Masks Uncomfortable Fact: Almost Nobody Uses It
I'd just like to go on record saying I use it as a payment method for developer services for developers locked out of the western world's banking system.

Of course most of these devs will take any of the top N cryptos.

As a very early bitcoin adopter who made and lost and made and lost a fortune; I can say that bitcoin and crypto is still "ahead of schedule" for realistic-optimistic timelines of adoption.

I still believe cryptocurrency will continue to grow and eventually eat gold; but I am less convinced that it will eat fiat.

eof··on IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries
Wait a second. IQ is a weighted average. IQs “raising” in developing countries due to more modern problems to solve, would also manifest itself as “dropping” IQs in developed countries.

This does not mean people are getting dumber, it just means there is a narrowing gap, which is good, not bad, assuming you want the best for all humanity.

eof··on Swiss Cat Ladders
We made a ladder (completely uninspired by this which pops up occasionally).

This was after moving the cat to an upstairs apt, which had always been an outdoor cat in Vermont.

Took him like two months to figure it out, even after terrifying and pissing him off by stranding him in the middle of it.

He was a thankful and happy cat when he finally realized his freedom.

Ours was uglier than all of the shown above (a spiral staircase around a pvc pipe), but it was a fun project and very rewarding.

eof··on WhatsApp voice calls were used to inject spyware on phones
Absolutely. But no more naughty than USA or Israel, as far as I can tell.
eof··on WhatsApp voice calls were used to inject spyware on phones
I love how you’ve been convinced that Russia and China are naughty and Israel is somehow too good to be shady.
eof··on Julian Assange Appears in Court for U.S. Extradition Hearing
Yes, everyone who has had their life saving seized by civil asset forfeiture has had their trials move at an equally speedy pace!
eof··on Julian Assange Appears in Court for U.S. Extradition Hearing
I wonder if the current political reputation of USA and Trump will play into Assange dodging extradition.
eof··on UFOs invading military airspace multiple times a month, but public won't be told
I definitely buy the core the thesis of HyperNormalisation, but I find it equally likely the CIA/deepstate would push a narrative that all those UFOs that started popping up right around the time we were getting nuclear off the ground was totally just the super awesome USA government's super secret technology.
eof··on How the dream of cheap streaming television became a pricey, complicated mess
I used to feel that way. I’ve also expected much broader democratization of production from 3D printing.

It’s possible software is just not there yet, but I think network effects and de facto cartels are an equal or greater force against the natural progress of technology.

At this point I am pretty convinced it’s going to take a union or pact amongst ai devs, or a revolution, to prevent a couple players from basically “winning capitalism”, and rent seeking off infinite labor supply for eternity.

Maybe I'm a joy-kill, but, I really find the April Fool's tradition of ruining the internet for one day every year pretty unfortunate.
