emsixteen··on The legacy of fy_iceworld, Counter-Strike’s divisive, popular custom map (2020)
I don't think it's necessarily modelled after it, moreso a direct consequence of that lineage.
emsixteen··on The legacy of fy_iceworld, Counter-Strike’s divisive, popular custom map (2020)
I've read this many times over the years. It's always a fascinating nostalgic read.

I need to start backing up random pages like this.

Do you remember Wanted? The wild west one? Good craic.

Then there's Ricochet.. :')

emsixteen··on Vikings went to Mediterranean for ‘summer jobs’ as mercenaries, left graffiti
Celts were on the Isle of Man long before the Vikings, but I'm just nit-picking.

I agree that the history of Vikings is way more fascinating and complicated than what's typically paraded about.

Shoutouts to Tore Hund!

Any examples? Would love to try some.

… which is also why the cookie banner scourge shows how nefarious companies are these days. They don't need identifiable information for their analytics, they're just all super greedy.
emsixteen··on WebKit Supports Nested CSS
I don't understand this viewpoint, but I've seen it a lot so you're definitely not alone. A large part of what's useful about SASS are the mixins and functions, not just nesting - do you just not use those?
emsixteen··on Turning a TV set-top box into a Linux computer (2022)
Very cool, I wish I could do this sort of thing.

> iPhones have an ecosystem around lighting, cables docks devices etc, to change that would cause users to be far more upset then having a different cable then other devices, see the outrage when they switched to lightning in the first place

Actually incredible to me that people can have this mindset. Have an adapter for your gaff proprietary cable with MFI chips to make sure third parties can't make long-lasting ones cheaply, not for the standardised USB-C one.

Are those fake chargers/cases compatible with the genuine earbuds? I'd have no qualms about getting some of those if so.

emsixteen··on ChatGPT Plus
> consistent with the vast majority

As ever the whole sentence is important, rather than just picking out a part of it.

emsixteen··on ChatGPT Plus
Your perception of money really isn't consistent with the vast majority, I'd imagine.

Frivolously throwing money at unnecessary subscriptions isn't something for me.

emsixteen··on Console Screendumps
I did try browsing around and changing the themes before making that comment, but the only theme for me was pain.
emsixteen··on Console Screendumps
Interesting at a core, but I'm too fickle to browse a site that looks like it was made to intentionally be a painful viewing experience.
emsixteen··on The other Phillips head screwdriver
Yeah, I'd buy their megadora ones ideally, £25+ per screwdriver is too expensive imo.
emsixteen··on The other Phillips head screwdriver
Cheers for the recommendation. Doesn't seem to be JIS though? It can be hard to tell and I'm no expert at all, but they seem to be normal Philips.
emsixteen··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
This is the issue for me.
emsixteen··on The other Phillips head screwdriver
Been looking for JIS screwdrivers which don't cost a fortune here in Europe, not had much luck. Don't quite need it before a few months from now but it's still frustrating!
emsixteen··on Twitter officially bans third-party clients after cutting off prominent devs
Oh dear. Better that it's official than just swimming in ambiguity sea though I guess.
emsixteen··on Norwegian Shipping Company Bans Electrified Vehicles over Fire Fears
Struggling to put much weight on an article that can't get the name of the company right, despite it being plastered in massive letters on the side of the ships in the pictures.

Lithium batteries are scary when they're damaged though. Can't imagine wanting to be on-board in the case of a fire, either.

emsixteen··on How to own an airline in 3 easy steps and grab the TSA nofly list along the way
Good observation! Hope this wasn't an attempted, and failed, grammar 'correction'?

Is this a thing?

emsixteen··on Say it right with DeepL Write: Introducing our new AI writing companion
Pretty cool. Struggled with some expression related things, but I'm sure it'll improve rapidly. Will give it a proper go when/if they release a browser add-on.
emsixteen··on No Start Menu for You
I really struggled with moving to macOS for work, but a couple of utilities helped a lot:

AltTab - Windows style tabbing between windows, including thumbnails and tiles for each open window of an application[1].

    brew install --cask alt-tab
LinearMouse - Removes mouse acceleration, but also gives you the ability to have different scroll directions on mouse and trackpad[2].

    brew install --cask linearmouse
Rectangle - Open source window management tool, I use it for window snapping[3].

    brew install --cask rectangle

Are you saying macOS has this?

emsixteen··on The IAB loves tracking users but hates users tracking them
Things like this being opt-out make my skin crawl.
emsixteen··on Ask HN: What “special” app you are using?
> Sound Meter

Not sure what you're using this for, or which exact app it is, but I use the app put out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for this, NIOSH Sound Level Meter[1].

I use Network Ping Lite[2] often to just check if the network I'm on is stable/up.

emsixteen··on Telemetry settings in Kibana
Thanks.

Looks like the title on HN was changed to something which misses the entire point of the post.

emsixteen··on Telemetry settings in Kibana
It's more than just that it's opt-out - It's that the setting is even named 'opt in', while not being opt in at all.
