emsixteen··on We ported the original Doom to SQL
Meanwhile I'm too inept to get WordPress to load dynamic content faster than molasses.
emsixteen··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
This is relatively useful to know, but I can't help but wonder how people are expected to be able to describe something that they probably have difficulty putting in to words. Maybe it's mostly useful for those who have a design eye, background, or experience.
emsixteen··on Spymarks, not Watermarks
Curious about this as well, would love some knowledgeable folks to chime in.
emsixteen··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Jokes are hard.
emsixteen··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Surely it still needs to be connected to something that has a network connection, though? Doesn't really mean much here.
emsixteen··on The lost joy of music piracy
I really loved OiNK and all of that era. Was genuinely gutted when it all fell apart, as it was also about the community of it all. Always wanted a tee - I'm envious.

When waffles and What.cd appeared it seemed to me like waffles would be the long-term successor, but definitely didn't work out that way. Neither ever felt the same, and I wasn't engaged with them like I had been on OiNK.

Nowadays I'm just another streaming service zombie when it comes to music, aside from my old library sitting in Plexamp, like my own little musical time capsule.

emsixteen··on Slightly reducing the sloppiness of AI generated front end
I'd probably just accept that I'd hired them through fiverr.
emsixteen··on Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot
> A site like Ian's Shoelace Site is not representative of its time any more than it is now

It very clearly is, though.

emsixteen··on Veracrypt project update
How's that work? Got a link handy to explain to a dummy?
emsixteen··on How to get better at guitar
My partner's also a dance, and this is what's always come across from her, too - that you can tell a dancer from a glance in an instant, even on the street. I have a little bit of an eye for it but only by virtue of being around that environment.

(also: ex-pro ballet to HN? Can't imagine there's much crossover in that Venn!)

emsixteen··on Tailscale's new macOS home
That's a much worse interaction.
emsixteen··on Digg is gone again
The legibility of that site is incredibly bad.
emsixteen··on Ian's Shoelace Site
This is the one I use, too. Learned this and the near-instant one, but this is actually really practical and produces a nice and even knot. Winner!
emsixteen··on Nvidia's 10-year effort to make the Shield TV the most updated Android device
This has me wondering if I can use my release Switch as an Android TV box
emsixteen··on Backing up Spotify
The cost of rest of the hardware, running it constantly, and 'admin' overheads aren't to be scoffed at to be fair.
emsixteen··on Backing up Spotify
I worry about potential bans from scraping files through this sort of thing.
emsixteen··on Backing up Spotify
Exactly the same here, I just wanna back up my playlists and liked songs, in an organised and tagged manner, at a non-potato quality.
emsixteen··on 2002: Last.fm and Audioscrobbler Herald the Social Web
I miss it deeply.
emsixteen··on 2002: Last.fm and Audioscrobbler Herald the Social Web
OiNK before that, too. Once waffles and what disappeared then I was never 'able' to get on to one of the newer ones… the whole process is some real archaic thing. Used to have a great 'profile' on those others, but yeah.
emsixteen··on No ARIA is better than bad ARIA
I think it would be very beneficial if the browser vendors, together with screenreader vendors and those who use them, were able to come together to actually unify the approach to how elements/these attributes/etc. are communicated to the end user.
emsixteen··on [dead]
I have it pointed at my domains just for basic stuff and luckily that seems to be working at least.
emsixteen··on Unreal Tournament 2004 is back
Railgun trail to match the reload time, always!
emsixteen··on Bazzite: Operating System for Linux gaming
Will hop over to one of these the day that the AAA multiplayer titles I want to play are supported. I know it's down to the anticheat, but I still wanna play 'em. Hopefully Valve are able to push that forward.
emsixteen··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
I'm on the hunt for ways (system instructions/first message prompts/settings/whatever) to do away with all of the fluffy nonsense in how LLMs 'speak' to you, and instead just make them be concise and matter-of-fact.

fwiw as a regular user I typically interact with LLMs through either:

- aistudio site (adjusting temperature, top-P, system instructions)

- Gemini site/app

- Copilot (workplace)

Any and all advice welcome.

emsixteen··on Android developer verification: Early access starts
… and then the return argument is that those who actually want to do this nefariously are already going to be able to hide device modifications/rooting.
emsixteen··on LaLiga's Anti-Piracy Crackdown Triggers Widespread Internet Disruptions in Spain
Insanely ignorant.
emsixteen··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
Source was the game that never really grabbed the 1.6 playerbase, moreso than 1.6.
emsixteen··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
For us the combination of WoW and WC3, then later LoL, are what ruined the thriving LAN centre scene across Ireland. There were 12 or so actual GAMETHEWORLD centres, then other wee franchised ones. WoW especially just didn't lend itself to LAN gaming, absolutely sucked the life out of the centres.
emsixteen··on Content-Aware Spaced Repetition
Firefox Dev Edition, nothing odd imo.
